There's good and bad in everything, including change; our society has changed in a number of bad ways and a number of good ways; like the fact that we don't die from small pox or polio because we have vaccines to prevent them now. We don't have slaves and aren't as racist as we used to be, we don't beat people for loving the same sex, but of course for both of these there are still people with an older (cruder) mindset so there is an exception here and there. But just in the past 100 or so years our society has changed tremendously, and yes in some ways we have gone backwards rather than forwards; but for the most part society has moved forward in changes and technology. Alvin Toffler once said "Change is not merely necessary to life - it is life." and with that, we shall begin.
Now here's a topic where the pros and cons weigh on each other heavily. Technology - we can do so many things so much easier but we have lost touch with each other sometimes. We let electronics and technology have full run of our life's and I can honestly not think of a job that doesn't require technology. In this day and age, almost all of our jobs function smoother or are based purely on technology. Actually, according to iowa.gov more than 50% of jobs require you to have some sort of degree in technology. Since the 1900s we have come up with lots of inventions to help further society and make our lives a lot easier. There's the obvious inventions like in 1901 "The first radio receiver, successfully received a radio transmission" (thoughtco.com) or in 1955 we got the first microwave oven. A really obvious invention would be in 1937 we came up with the first digital computer and then 36 years later we invented the first mobile phone, sure as the years go on we came up with newer and more advanced versions of these but still! Now granted this isn't a technological advancement but still a major invention (arguably one of the best advancements made by humans) in 1928 a man named Alexander Flemming invented the first antibiotic opening up a new world of invention.
Since we are on the topic of innovation and penicillin, lets talk medicine and the medical field. So much has changed throughout the course of 100 years, especially death
I believe that society has changed for the worse. The reason I believe this is because society in the past was much simpler. There was not a lot of technology available to individuals. People are starting to lose the art of communication. Instead people text one another in text lingo versus using proper grammar. Family units in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's were much different than they are today. There were more families with two parents in the home. There was less single parent household or step parent households. the more society evolve and changes the worse our society is becoming. The more technology is incorporated into our lives the further people seem to be getting from one another. In the 1950's a traditional household consisted of one mother, one father, two or three children, and a
As we progress further into the future, technology seems to have more of a grasp on our society. Which can be seen as both beneficial or damaging. We have come to a point in time were cars are starting to become autonomous from a push of a button, no longer requiring us to stay focused at the wheel. Should we entrust our lives within a man-made artificial intelligent?
I am sure that everyone of you have heard about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, we all have heard about the famous case of aliens and UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico. Most people might be interested in the topic of aliens, but I know that the majority of you just think of it as rumours and the existence of them are impossible. Therefore, I am standing here in front all of you to make you change your perspective. I am strongly confident that I have found the evidence of their real existence to convince all of you.
Medicine has been around for a time way before ours. The way it has changed over the past 100 years is insane! A lot of people talk about how certain medication has completely changed their life in a better way. For instance, ADHD medicine is a big part for some people. My younger cousin would not be able to sit in a classroom for 8 hours if he didn’t have that ADHD medication. The surgeries from the 1900’s to today's time have advanced a lot. There was no such thing as a simple procedure back then as there are thousands of simple procedures that are being done today. Without technology we wouldn’t be able to perform CT scans, which plays a big part in saving people's lives. Back in the early 1900’s brain scans would’ve saved millions of lives.
At a time of improvements in society, the 20th century was a central time for scientific discoveries and enhancements. Specifically, medicine experiences a significant advancement during the 1900s. Starting out with the bare minimum, medical researchers invented life-changing technologies, which are continually used in the modern world. Without these developments, high death rates would remain prominent in society today and living conditions would still be in poor shape. Patient care, medical personnel treatment, and medical techniques greatly improved during the 1900s. Along with this, various drugs, vaccines, and procedures came into the medical field and saved many patients’ lives.
Robin Sharma once said “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” In “Rivers and Tides” Andy Goldsworthy built a stick statue. When the tide started rising the statue was hard to move, then as the tide got higher the sticks started to float away in a messy manner. At the end of the process the top of the statue floated off all together in a gorgeous manner. Likewise change in society today can be good or bad depending on the conditions,
Persuasive speech outline purpose: To persuade my audience to donate blood through the American Red Cross. Introduction:
Humans are a species that superficially welcome change, yet regress to antiquated ideals. They look back to our ancestors to learn, to develop discernment from their mistakes. Simultaneously, society rejects some ideas and implements others. The first form of democracy was effectuated during the Athenian era. The display of a woman’s body was not shamed, Greeks displayed pornographic art in buildings to fit their aesthetic ideal. This was the antithesis in the 50’s, however, today we have magazine covers with half-naked women in just about every grocery store. Change can only have one of two effects, either positive or negative, but we will continue to look to our past for a part of the answer.
Since man began walking the earth millions of years ago we have been progressing. At first “the pace of change was so slow that entire cultural traditions replicated themselves.” (Wright, 2004, p.14) However, it quickly exploded and became a “runaway progression of change.” (Wright, 2004, p.13) We are progressing on an unprecedented level. New technologies are consistently being developed that change how we lived our lives. How we perceived the world around us and how we, in turn, impacted the world. This is not a problem if you believe in the Victorian notion of progress. “The assumption that a pattern of change exists in the history of mankind . . . that it consists of irreversible changes in one direction only, and that this direction is
In the 21th century we live our lives day to day seeing the next medicine breakthrough. It is easy for us to assume that’s how the history of medicine has always been. On the contrary, medicine became positively modern in the 19th century, new inventions were introduced, new discoveries were brought to their attention, remedies was in the spotlight, and the start of women’s professions generated.
It was October 6, 1998 when he was lured from the bar that cold, fateful night. His skull was smashed with a pistol butt as he was lashed to a fence, left for dead in near freezing temperatures. Nearly eighteen hours later he was found by passersby and taken to a hospital where we remained in a coma for several days until slowly slipping away. At his funeral, picketers carried signs saying, "God Hates Fags" and *Fags Deserve to Die."
In our ever evolving society we seem to be having a greater affinity to technical jobs and careers more integrated with our technology. It appears that we are heading into a world of Science, Technology , Engineering, and Mathematics or STEM. The STEM fields that are rapidly increasing relate to jobs that deal quite a bit with our newer technology and the creation and development of new and more efficient technologies. To compliment this increase in STEM careers, we need to focus our time, energy, and most of all capital on the lackluster STEM program in our school systems.
For example, using a leftover coffee can for loose nails or screws, or even washing and reusing a plastic zip-loc bag instead of throwing it in the garbage. Thrift shopping is a way of reusing someone else’s unwanted goods. As I spoke about in an earlier speech about thrifting, I included many locations and ways to thrift, also the benefits to the shopper and the donator. One place in particular was shopping at the local boys and girls club. I personally shop there, keeping my eyes open for a good deal. For example, the pair of jeans that I am wearing today was purchased from this store just a few months ago. I paid only $8.00 for this pair of Lucky Jeans and according to buckle.com, a retailer for lucky jeans the retail price is $99.00 that is a savings to me of $91.00.I am not the type to worry about name brands, but quality usually does cost more. If I can get a quality pair of jeans at a fraction on the price, I am glad to shop at the thrift store. I am thankful to the person that made the donation of the lucky jeans and they can benefit from that donation. According to the IRS webpage, IRS. Gov it explains that an individual can donate items like clothing, household furniture and furnishings, a car or boat, even taxidermy. The donations are appraised, by the donator, and recorded. At the time of filing taxes if the donation equals at least $500 for the year, the donator may take advantage of the
As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also have many friends who use very little technology in their day-to-day living. This drastic difference makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it is healthy in the long run. It is really easy to just get caught up in using technology without thinking about the pros and cons.
