Smoking Kills
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to write their senator and urge him/her to increase anti-smoking campaign funds.
Central Idea: Smoking is injurious to human health, hence, stricter/inclusive clean indoor air policy should be adequately enforced.
Introduction:
How many of you have seen your parent’s or grandparent’s lifespan getting cut short because of bad choices as a result of addiction to smoking? You are not alone.I had seen my grandpa’s plight after his lung collapsed and was bedridden for six months before he passed away.
According to World Health Organization, “The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing

b) Raise minimum age
Raising minimum wage of purchase to 21 would reduce consumption by 14.6% among 15-17 years old.
c) Full implementation of pre-existing smoke-free indoor policies
When smoke-free indoor air policies are fully implemented in workplaces across the country, 725000 current smokers are projected to quit for good.
At the local level, full implementation of Chapter 6-331: Smoke-free Air Law adopted by City of Harrisburg would also prevent city residents from getting exposed to secondhand smoke in public places when enforced strictly. Unfortunately, the law still permits smoking in bars, enclosed bar areas of restaurants, and casinos.
2. Increasing anti-smoking funding campaigns.
According to CDC, the tobacco industry spends about $8.8 billion annually to market their product while anti-smoking awareness campaign only gets about 54 million for awareness campaigns. This funding is relatively smaller than what the industry spends.
CDC further claims, 100,000 Americans kick the habit of smoking by seeing the graphic anti-smoking campaign advertisements.
Now that you know how to protect others from smoking let us imagine what it would be like to live in the smoke-free environment.

If effective tobacco control is strictly implemented:
1. Lowers the incidents of lung and throat cancer.
Between 2005
The campaign educates the smoker who is trying to quick with advice which will give them a clear understanding on how their health is at risk and the consequences that it will have
This problem, which plagues all Americans, should have action taken on a local scale to help protect the health of the public. The Ames City Council is in the process of debating a city ordanince which whould ban smoking in all public places, with the exception of those designated as "smokng areas". A public place shall be defined by Subsection
In Texas smokers can no longer smoke in workplaces and restaurants, municipal worksites, schools and bars. Etc. I believe smokers will not like this law, and will be forced outside to smoke in all weather.
The smoking habit is the principal cause of illness, disability and death around the world. More than five million of people in the world die due to smoking habit every year. If we don’t take care of this in 2030 the amount will be ten million. Seven million of these deaths would be in poor countries.
Smokers face many challenges in the modern world, and one of the biggest happens in the workplace. Many large – and small – employers have taken a strict zero-tolerance approach to smoking in the workplace, and that can literally leave smokers with no place to
Every day in America families’ gathers together to celebrate special events or the accomplishments of one of its members. Many times these special moments can be ruined or brought to an abrupt end due to others nearby smoking. Public spaces should be safe and accessible to all members of society to use without the inconvenience of someone else’s smoking ruining their outing or causing health issues to flare up such as, asthma. People do have the right to choose to smoke if they desire, but nonsmokers have the right to go out to public places with their family and not be exposed to harmful secondhand smoke. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke is just as harmful as smoking and leads to a higher occurrence of cancer and heart disease. Furthermore,
Anti-smoking campaigns are booming to warn people who are, will and will smoke about the harm.
Smoking is injurious to health and a preventable cause of premature death. In the U.S.; it is estimated that one in each five adults smoke currently and about 480,000 people die prematurely from diseases caused by smoking or secondhand smoke exposure. (CDC tobacco use). The economic burden of tobacco use is also significant. About $100 billion per year is spent in medical expenses and another $100 billion per year in lost productivity. There is no safe level of smoking
Goal: I want to persuade my audience that smoking is a health risk to all of society and that smokers should be encouraged to quit.
An estimated 36.5 million or 15.1 % of adults aged 18 years old and older currently smoke cigarettes and more than 16,000,000 have smoking or live with diseases that are related to smoking. According to US department of health and human services, over the past five decades, there is a significant decline in cigarette smoking in the U.S. The progress has slowed in recent years and the prevalence of use of other tobacco products such as vapes, e-cigars and smokeless tobacco
The tobacco industry kills more people in North America from Monday to Thursday of each week than the terrorists murdered in total on September 11, 2001. That sounds unrealistic, doesn’t it? Well, smoking is an epidemic that affects us all, whether you are a smoker or you aren’t. In order to stop this epidemic, we need to
The tobacco industry is important to the economy. In 1991, worldwide tobacco sales exceeded $59.8 billion and in 1992 the industry was rated as one of the top one hundred advertisers (Pechmann and Ratneshwar, 1994). However, there are high prices to pay - socially, economically, and personally - as a result of this industry. Annual mortality figures indicate that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. An estimated 390,000 people die each year of smoke related illnesses, which is greater than the combined mortality for cocaine, crack, AIDS, homicide, suicide, and alcohol abuse (Botvin, G., Baker, Botvin, E., Dusenbury, Cardwell, and Diaz, 1993).
(Internal Summary/Transition: Moreover, smoking is not only bad for your health, but also the health of the people around you.)
b. Sub-point B: Another cause, can also be influenced by social media, newspaper, and TV.Jeff Carpenter wrote on ABC News article,on November 1st, 2001, he states “the tobacco industry has altered its advertising, ads still lure teens into buying tobacco products”. Advertisements would target viewers to earn more money. Tobacco companies stopped outdoor billboards, but have taken these advertising dollars and put them into local convenience stores.
C. Today, I’d like to talk to you about how banning smoking in public can lead to less secondhand smoking and health effects, causing fewer environmental issues, and finally, supporting smokers in giving up smoking.
