Specific Purpose: To persuade the members of my audience to support that undocumented students should have access to in-state tuition. Thesis Statement: Supporting that undocumented students should have access to in-state tuition will help those undocumented students who want to pursue a college education. Introduction Attention-Getter: Can any of you guess the number of undocumented students enrolled in college throughout the United States? According to the Educators For Fair Consideration fact sheet, there are about 7,000 - 13,000. Introduce Topic: Undocumented students who make it to college face a plethora of financial and logistical barriers. According to the National Immigration Center, undocumented students are defined as: 1. foreign nationals who entered the United States without inspection/with fake documents, or 2. Legally entered as nonimmigrants, who then violated the terms of their status by letting their Visa expire ("College Guide for Undocumented Students”). Significance: Since 2001, state legislatures have been battling over the issue of whether or not to provide undocumented students, who have lived in this country for many years, a chance at a low-cost college education.
