American Horror Story, a spine chilling series created by Ryan Murphy, has captivated viewers by having them live in the Murder House, escape the Asylum, protect the Coven and attend the Freak Show. Due to the frightening teaser trailers that promote the show, people get intrigued and want to watch the show. The “Open Wide” teaser for Freak Show shows a ghastly clown that opens its grotesque mouth to reveal the main title. Although the short teaser may seem plain and simple, the usage of makeup, sound and special effects reveal a more menacing figure on the clown. Clowns are one of the common phobias that people have, whether they are children or adults. The friendly image of a clown has been corrupted by pop culture due to their frightening …show more content…
At the beginning of the trailer, the viewer can hear distorted laughter and as the trailer goes on, the sound of the laughter lowers in pitch and slows down, heightening the suspense as the viewer will believe something bad is about to happen. After the distorted sound of glass breaking in reverse cuts off the laughter, a high pitch scream starts to crescendo as the camera zooms into the mouth of the clown, further heightening the suspense as the viewer is put in a first person perspective that they are the ones being devoured and the shriek they hear gives the viewer the feeling that they are the ones screaming. If you pay attention to the movement of the clown, you notice that as the clown changes movement, the sound changes along with it. First, the viewer sees the head of the smiling clown tilting towards its shoulder and at the same time the viewer hears the distorted laughter. Also as the clown slowly centers its head, the viewer hears the sound of the laughter start to lower in pitch and slows down, a technique used in horror films to heighten suspense. The sudden change in facial expression from happy to murderous is accompanied by the sound of glass shattering in reverse, cutting off the menacing laughter, surprising the viewer that something ominous is about to happen as the clown goes from a snarl to opening its mouth, the sound starts up again as a shriek that …show more content…
The black filling of the sclera as well as the usage of black contacts at the beginning of the trailer gives the clown the appearance of a demon and as the clown opens its mouth, a part of the sclera is shown to be white, signifying that humans themselves can act as monsters and behave in such a way. One example is the Sawney Bean Family cult, a family of cannibals that were seen as mindless savages but those savages were in fact human, so we know the darkness that people harbor deep inside them. Similar to the pitch black eyes, the usage of sharpened teeth enhances the demonic look the clown portraits. As the clown is centering its head, it opens its mouth a little to reveal human teeth. As the trailer continues and the clown opens its mouth, the human teeth are replaced by sharper teeth that are ready to take a bite out of flesh, further indicating the demonic properties a human can have if they were to behave in such a gruesome manner. In addition, the special effects that are used in the mouth of the clown give the viewer the sense that they are being devoured. As the camera zooms into the mouth, the viewer gets the feeling that they are being pushed against their will into the mouth of the clown, unable to escape the force that is pulling them in. As the camera zooms in to show
In the movie, “IT,” this can been seen when Bill was in the IT House with Richie and Eddie, he kept on telling them that what they were seeing (their greatest fear) was not real. Before Bill went into the IT house with Richie and Eddie, they did research about the clown and Bill discovered that Pennywise, is more likely to kill the kids who are afraid so he will project images that are not real. He comes up with the solution that whatever Pennywise shapeshifts into, it is not real so when they go into the IT house, he reminds then that whatever they see is not real. This is also quality information to the audience because it shows that audience that fears should not define and you should conquer your fear because if you let it haunt you forever, you will always be afraid of
eyes of the villain, this is a very long, in time, shot of the same

This is addressed in Fearless, specifically through the character of PT and Todd’s characterization of him supports the aforementioned perspective. PT is a newly divorced father of children that have been taken away from him. He states “I spend most of my day sitting in my tiny flat, watching children’s television shows”. This is representative of him not being able to let go of his children, and his attempts to try again and connect with them. His statement that “ I can’t complain. Literally. It’s a court order. I have anger management issues.” implies that he feels physically silenced by the punishment that he has received as a result of his mental illness. Furthermore, when he divulges, “the judge thought that sending me to clown school would be the answer to all my woes”, he is inferring that he sees his punishment as a joke. He symbolically is a “clown”, in his own eyes and in the eyes of society. In a production, the makeup artist and costume designer would demonstrate this by clothing him in a clowns costume and wig, as well as painting his face in tradition clown makeup. In all scenes he would appear this way, in order to show that everyone he interacts with regards him as a joke. The actor would be constantly attempting a skill, such as juggling, and failing horribly at it to accentuate his belief that he is integrally a failure. The “clown” aspect of PT’s personality is extremely important in the composers characterization of him, as it shows not only PT’s opinion on himself, but society’s as a whole. The audience is taken on PT’s specific inner journey due to his characterization and portrayal during a
The appearance of pennywise the clown would induce nightmares in most children. He has pale white skin, a red nose and a receding hairline with the rest of his head covered in curly red clown hair. As for his clothes, Pennywise wears classic circus clown clothes. A one piece that is brightly colored with blue sleeves and a yellow body. The purpose of Pennywise the Clowns actions and appearance are meant to do one thing. To scare children. When pennywise the clown is first seen talking to Georgie, although he is extremely creepy being in a gutter, a place no one would ever want to see a clown he seems friendly in his demeanor. However, when he pulls Georgie into the gutter his face becomes even more demonic and he gives a chilling smile and laugh with fanglike, yellow stained teeth.
These screams have an interesting connection to the rhythm of the film; each scream happens at a different point in time. In the first scenario, it happens in the beginning, then in the middle during the second scenario, and at the end in the final scenario.
Name’s Tom Foolery. I’m a clown. Or what the normal people had designated ‘Homo fossor’ or human clown. There were many new classes of ‘humans’ in Circus City. From the fire-breathers, acrobats, freaks, contortionists, clowns, and numerous other ‘pseudo’ humans the Big Top had to offer. It had only been about forty years since the rest of the world
The movie "Bowling for Columbine" was made after the shooting in Columbine high school and tries to explore the reasons for America's violent nature. Moore believes that there is one main reason for this, the fact that there are relaxed gun laws in America. Therefore, Moore uses a number of different persuasive techniques in order to try and persuade the viewer to believe that this is the case. He uses certain visuals, music, sequences the scenes in a specific order and uses facts and opinions to achieve this.
I'm horrified to find out that my mind wasn't deceiving me. It was a man, wearing a clown suit. His face smeared in makeup and a smile painted on his lips, which behind it had jagged, sharp teeth. The clown suit he was wearing was yellow, but drenched in blood. I numbly wonder who was his victim.
“It” in its origins, is Stephen King’s 1100 page literary masterpiece that has bred Coulrophobia within many who dared to sojourn through the novel. Nevertheless, it was the novel’s subject in focus, Pennywise the Clown, embodied in full flesh by Tim Curry that amassed a sadistic following and obsession with the arrival of the 1990 TV miniseries on ABC. Curry’s portrayal of the dancing clown quickly became a hallmark image for the horror canon, if not the face of horror movies altogether. Flash forward 27 years later, the fear of clowns has burgeoned into a commonplace phobia and horror trope. With all this to say, no clown has terrorized us in our nightmares quite like Curry’s Pennywise. Well, that was the case until Bill Skarsgård came along with a darker rendition of the fiendish entity in Andrés Muschietti remake of “It.”
Creepiness and Smiles to show the Antagonist true intentions and there are many different hints of close angle shots just for the audience to identify. Of course, this was based on special effects. I mean this movie clearly had special effects because all the characters had special powers so it had to be implemented into the bringing of this film. From my point of view, my favorite was still when Barron confronted Jake and the staging effects definitely were effective because it definitely surprised the audience and me because of his creepiness rising from the shadows and into the little glimpse of
At the start of the trailer, the background soundtrack is very calm and soothing, but as the minutes of the trailer increase, the build up of tension and quickness in the soundtrack increases too, loud instruments and sharpness of the sound are formed and the instruments are all played at the same time near to the end of the trailer where the upsetting ending happens, the instrument and sound techniques create tension and the build up of suspense synchronizing with the ending of the trailer, also the suspense wants to match the feelings an individual would have when getting closer to knowing what happens in the end. ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ transforms from a novel into a movie. The speed of the trailer decreases towards the
Clowns and dolls are always part of a child's childhood. Whether it is a little girl´s doll that she always walks around with, or a clown at a birthday party. As people get older they tend to get more afraid because of fake movies. Dolls are feared for the same reason but then people come to their senses and realize they aren´t real.

“If by chance someday you're not feeling well and you should remember some silly thing I've said or done and it brings back a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart, then my purpose as your clown has been fulfilled,” claims Red Skelton. Clowns are known to let people live in a happier conditions. When a clown is around, people always forget their pains, their problems and relieve their anxiety and stress due to stupid things that a clown can do that lead to a smile on all people’s face. People enjoy the clowns’ show: they make them happier, joyful and they see the positive side in their life. But what if the clowns became the scariest thing can happen to a person?
