Persuasive Words

The persuasive piece was written on the Clint Eastwood film Sully. The objective of this piece was to persuade a friend to watch the film after reading the piece. To write this piece I had to use different persuasive techniques to convey the message. When writing I tried to ensure the theme was consistent throughout the piece. I could have chosen to write more about a particular part of the movie but felt it would be unnecessary and would downgrade the overall piece. This essay is a persuasive opinion essay the word choice the author uses is all to make the reader agree with him. Some examples of where word choice has a particular effect in the essay can be found throughout the essay. The first example can be found in the first paragraph in the first sentence,

What is a persuasive essay? Persuasive writing attempts to persuade the reader to change their belief or point of view to the one of the essay. Heather Meredith’s essay “The Death Penalty: Justice for None” is more persuasive than Edward Koch’s “Death and Justice: How Capital Punishment Affirms Life”. This text of mine has been written using mostly logos, some pathos, and a pinch of ethos. I have split my text up in different segments. In each segment there is a different combination of mostly one or two different persuasive modes. the text is made of seven segments.

The number one thing most people fear is writing a speech and auditioning it publicly. Many people would rather die than to present publicly. Writing speeches to persuade people is not only a skill but art there needs to be a little bit of everything, The 3 common things in every persuasive speech is Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Pathos is what appeals to the emotion or what tugs on the heart. Logos is something that has to do with statistics or logistics like financial cost and funding. When it comes to being a successful rhetor, a speaker or writer, a rhetor must take three major factors into account. The rhetor must understand that the audience, the genre of their topic and different rhetorical situations play a huge role in the effectiveness of presenting their topic. The style and features an author use can help persuade the audience if clearly used. Dana Gioia in the essay “Why Literature Matters” uses factual data, superb word choice, and numbers to build her argument. In doing this, Gioia successfully persuades his audience into believing reading is a personal right.
