Maybe it's a 'they' and not he. Maybe it's a great empty part of space charged with electricity. Maybe it's a whole lot of things in a spaceship and flying saucers are really angels.” (Carey, 19) This shows us that he actually starts to see the world in a different perspective. Business, numbers and daily concerns suddenly seem less important to him. He also begin to think of his own faults and tried to release of them, but he couldn’t run away from his own past. “Harry Joy could not give up his pain to anyone, that he would carry it with him to the operating theatre and to wherever place he went to afterwards.” (Carey, 20) As he cannot run away from the past wrongs, he couldn’t stop worry about the future. “Yes, he had been happy. Of course, he'd been happy. But he had always been happy in the expectation that something else would happen, some wonderful unnamed thing which he was destined for, some quivering butterfly dream soaked in sunlight in a doorway.” (Carey 21) What kept him happy all the time was his hopes and his dreams about the future, now he sees no dreams but a vision of Hell in his future, and that is when the fear and anxiety took the place of happiness in his heart. His Promised Land: The Autobiography of John P. Parker, Former Slave And Conductor on the Underground Railroad.
In 1775 America was on the brink of revolution. The American people were tired of their British overlords. The revolution that was about to take place would cause many changes to the average persons way of life. Would British pounds still be legal tender? Would land contracts still be valid? Eventually life would settle back down, but this generation of Americans would forever be special. One the men living and changing during this time was Justin Morgan. Morgan was not a minuteman or a revolutionary. He was a composer, teacher, horse breeder, yeoman, and father. He was truly a Renaissance man of early America. Justin Morgan is one of the most overlooked early American composers. Rarely is extensive work done on his life. He does not
Towards the end of the 1930s, the United States government was preparing itself to progress from one despondency to another. Because the Great Depression was nearing its final months and the threat of becoming involved in the European war continuously intensified, it was decided that substantial amounts of energy, along with an ascending budget, was to be focused on developing military boats that could haul soldiers from ships to open beaches. In New Orleans, Andrew Jackson Higgins was known for manufacturing Eureka Boats, or shallow-watercrafts that assisted in the exploration of oil and gas throughout the Louisiana bayous. I believe that I am a good candidate for the Amy L. McKee-Everett Memorial Scholarship due to my caring and loving nature. An excellent example would be the time I gave back to Flat Rock River YMCA Camp this year, during New Years Eve. I volunteered as a counselor to a group of amazing girls. I wanted to volunteer my time, seeing that Flat Rock had done so much for me, in my seven years as a camper. It was time to give back. The 53 hours of time I spent helping out with all the girls, was immensely rewarding. I wouldn't trade my experiences I have had with Flat Rock River YMCA Camp for the world. This experience made me a better person, and will carry over into my undergraduate years of college. I am going into my freshman year bearing skills
