The next work is from Peter Paul Rubens. This creation was probably made in mid-1630 during his stay in Madrid. The painting is named “Venus and Adonis”. We can find that Rubens was one of the most interested artists of endowing the art of painting with prestige. He is the symbol of the baroque scholar Velazquez always wanted to imitate. This is due to its wide humanistic and religious culture, the mastery of several languages, the skills for diplomacy and its natural intelligence. Rubens reaped important prizes and noble distinctions of the kings of Spain and England that allowed him to acquire the dominion of Steen. For this reason he always self-portraits as a perfect gentleman, dressed elegantly and with the distinctive elements of his …show more content…
According to Pacheco, Velazquez's father-in-law, Rubens copied all of Tiziano's paintings during his stay in Madrid. Among the mythological scenes Rubens copied in Madrid is Venus and Adonis, which today houses the Prado Museum. The copy unfortunately has disappeared, but we can get a rough idea of how it was thanks to this version painted years later. Taking as a source the Ovid's “Metamorphoses” tells the story of Adonis: Venus and Persephone were fascinated by his beauty and it had to be Zeus who settled the matter, deciding that Adonis lived a third of the year with Aphrodite, the other with Persephone and the third where he wished. However, two-thirds of the year was spent by Adonis in the company of Aphrodite. For reasons unknown, Artemisia was angry with the young boy and during a hunt sent a wild boar against him, which mortally wounded him. In this way, Persephone, goddess of the Hells, would enjoy exclusively the young
The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)
The two works of art that I have chosen is the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem Stanze per la Giostra by Angelo Poliziano. The Birth of Venus was created between 1484 and 1486 by Sandro Botticelli. It was created in the early Renaissance period and is currently located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Stanze per la Giostra was written between 1475 and 1478 by the Renaissance poet Angelo Poliziano. Its current location is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, although it is currently not on display. The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra share many similarities as Stanze per la Giostra was Botticelli’s inspiration for creating The Birth of Venus. In The Birth of Venus, Botticelli has transformed Poliziano’s words into a beautiful work of art. These works of art share the theme of beauty. While Angelo Poliziano describes the beauty of the goddess Venus in his prose, Botticelli has captured her beauty with his delicate brush strokes. I will be comparing the theme of beauty between The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra as well as connecting it to contemporary standards of beauty.
One artist from the time, who was very popular for his reclining nudes was Giorgione (1477-1510) who painting Venus Resting, which was thought to have been left unfinished and the landscape to have been painted by Titian. The venus was originally meant to be accompanied by a cupid which has been painted out due to damage done to the painting, the cupid would have acted as a mediator between the goddess and the spectator (Chicago and Lucie-Smith,
Ares was not Aphrodite’s only love. She was also infatuated with the mortal Adonis. She first laid eyes on him when he was only an infant. She immediately fell in love with his beauty. She took him away from an incestuous union and placed him in the hands of Persephone, the goddess of the underworld, who also fell for him. Growing up, Adonis would go off hunting. When Aphrodite had to go far away, she warned him not to go out far in the forest and to flee from an animal if it did not run from him. He did not listen to her and was killed by a boar, who is rumored to have been Ares acting out of jealousy. Adonis was sent to the underworld and must spend half a year with Persephone and the other half with Aphrodite. (Greeka)
In 1538, the Venus of Urbino was commissioned by the Duke of Urbino Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, to his bride as a wedding gift. Titian referenced his teacher’s work, which is Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus , It described Venus sleeping on the ground, in nature, nude. Her gesture is almost same as Titian’s Venus of Urbino, distinguished by the position of her right arm. Titian used the “Velatura” as known as “glazing” technique, which is a technique of applying multiple layers of transparent thin paint to create the final piece, the charm of this technique is the painting is as smooth as glass and the
First thing that I noticed about this gorgeous oil and tempera on panel painting was the precise emotional aspect: romantic and simple, yet so exceptionally lifelike. This work surely shows a development from the powerfully
I have chosen a famous oil on canvas painting: Venus and Cupid by Lorenzo Lotto made around the fifteenth and sixteenth century during the Italian Renaissance period. Overall, this piece is extremely intriguing to me, I cannot imagine how the artist created it with such detail and precision. Overall, this painting has this happy and positive mood, but it is also makes me curious as to what this painting is about. It also gives me this feeling to smile for Cupid and Venus in the painting, rather than with them, as there faces are conveyed as being happy together. Its colors similarly, just like the overall painting, has this beautiful bright and cheery color that seem to suit Venus and Cupid well.
In his later career, Titian focused more on religious and mythological works. For Spain's Philip II, he painted "Venus and Adonis" (c. 1554), a piece inspired by Ovid's "Metamorphoses" that shows the goddess Venus trying in vain to hold on to her beloved Adonis. Titian again explored his fascination with the Roman goddess of love in "Venus and the Lute Player"
The work of art that I have chosen to write about, is the Three Miracles of Saint Zenobius (1500-10). This painting is part of a bigger collection that depicts scenes from the life of Saint Zenobius. It’s sister pieces are spread out in different parts of the world, such places as, London, Dresden and New York itself. The painter of this entire collection is Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) and he belongs to the Early part of the Renaissance. It is worth to note, that Botticelli was taught by Filippo Lippi. Fra Filippo Lippi was a prominent artist of his time and he painted his work with great color and as well with a narrative quality. Botticelli himself made a name for himself by his artistic style and to his contribution to painting the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and even though his most notable work of art was the Birth of Venus that was created eighteen years prior to the Three Miracles, this piece of work takes a different approach than his other paintings. The painting itself resembles the Scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist (1490/95) and it could be said that Botticelli was inspired by it.
Venus of adonis was painted by Tiziano Vecellio and dates back to A.D 1400-1600. He was one of the greatest italian renaissance painter and he was recognized as a great painter early in his life. He was a master of the oil medium and a supreme colorist. Many of his paintings represent either religion, antiquity and/or beauty. In his painting of Venus and Adonis it was inspired by a tale called Ovid’s Metamorphoses and therefore was called poetry in paint, also known as poesie (The MET). The painting portrays the goddess Venus has fallen in love with Adonis. The goddess Venus is trying to hold back Adonis because she does not want him leaving, since he is a hunter. While the goddess Venus is trying to hold Adonis back, his dogs are
Twenty eight years after Giorgione’s death, as a close friend to him, Titian created another version of the reclining female nude, which is also one of the most famous female nude in art history - the Venus of Urbino in 1538. It was an oil painting on canvas, and now located at Uffizi gallery in Florence.
Unquestionably, there is no universal notion of beauty or ugliness. The definition of the term is as ever-changing as our tastes both depending on the period and world culture. European artists and philosophers dominated (and still dominate) a grand percentage of the art world and thus their Eurocentric views on what is deemed beautiful or ugly, became the norm but it does not fit the conventions in the rest of the world. A piece such as Titian’s Venus of Urbino is viewed as a timeless masterpiece when it sits on the throne of exclusion in the art world. Eroticism is evident in the painting, in fact, it recalls the marital obligations of the woman towards her husband. The erotic allegory is even clearer in the representation of Venus, goddess of love, as a sensual and exquisite woman who stares at the viewer, who cannot ignore her beauty. The light and the warm color of Venus’ body contrasts with the background and dark cushions, further highlight the eroticism itself. Even though this painting was revolutionary in its time, with Venus directing her gaze to the viewer, it is still considered a nude (versus naked), there is a sense of innocence in her corporal language, even as she is cupping herself in an attempt to cover her nude body.
Artemisia Gentileschi, Venus and Cupid, ca. 1625-30. Oil on canvas, 38 x 56 5/6 inches. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA.
Birth of Venus, 1482) represents the face of the goddess Venus. This piece was made in 1984 as a depiction of the face of Venus from the earlier painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli that was completed in 1482. The piece’s present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging on the wall.
