In today's day and age we don't see too many side scrolling beat em ups but Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is just that. This game has it's good and bad points but is still fun to play if you're into old school games.

Phantom Breaker plays like most beat em ups but has a few neat things under it's sleeve. The game has four main characters who you may pick from each start at level 0 when you start. As you play you will get experience by picking up ruby's your defeated foes drop and at the end of the level it adds it all up. With your experience you can power up your character or unlock skills. There is a level cap of 50 so there is no way to unlock everything sadly but you may switch up your stats and skills at any time other than in a level. Each enemy you get a combo on drops coins and they also drop coins once defeated and this adds to the hectic nature of the game as the screen can be filled with coins and enemies at the same time. Its amazing how much is on the screen at once and there is no slow down at all even during my times playing online coop. The first time you play through the game might be tough as your not at a high level and some of the bosses can be a pain to deal with but once you reach a high level the game is pretty easy to beat on normal difficulty. Once you beat the game on normal you unlock a hard difficulty setting and there are even higher levels than that that can be unlocked making the game have some replay value and if you would want to level up all of the characters. The game does get repetitive after a while though as you go around fighting the same enemies over and over again. Each characters has a special move they can equip but all the characters start with the lighting move and the only way to find new ones is to find them in game play and I only found them in the later half of the game.
