As the health care industry expands and there is need for health care professionals, the future of pharmacy is expanding as well. New roles in pharmacy will be created that allow pharmacists to serve that increasing population and the needs of the new health care systems. These roles are growing, specializing in drug therapy interventions and treatment. Highly trained, skilled technicians are critical elements in a high-functioning pharmacy, more training a and education for pharmacy technicians is more responsibility.

The University of Wisconsin Hospital and clinics implemented a tech-check-tech program and recorded a 99.8% accuracy for pharmacy technicians filling unit dose medication cassettes. Other pilot programs compared pharmacists with trained pharmacy technicians on checking unit dose cassettes the accuracy rates were comparable to a pharmacists with 99.8% accuracy standard.
Accredited pharmacy programs do not just train to be “retail technicians” or a hospital technician, they have across the board training and employers know that anyone they hire from an accredited program has experience with things like vaccines, sterile products, IV preparation and stress management. As a mobile society and techs being trained under accredited programs, they have broad knowledge and training.
Looking ahead, The Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts that employment of pharmacy technicians will increase by 31% by 2018 compared with the 2008 figures, not because pharmacists are expanding into more clinical roles but also because prescriptions drug use will increase overall as the population
