My IPPE Institutional was at St. Joseph Mercy Health System, a part of Trinity Health. I was fortunate to be assigned to this location and with my preceptor as it has impacted the way I view hospital pharmacy and the profession as whole. My preceptor is the director of the hospital’s Pharmacy residency program and she has an established curriculum/schedule for IPPE and APPE students from Pharmacy Colleges in South East Michigan and some part of Ohio. As part of my experience, I shadowed and had some hands on experience in inpatient pharmacy, oncology pharmacy (Chemotherapy department), investigational drug department, aseptic compounding, and drug acquisition and distribution. I also went on rounds with Surgical Intensive care team, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department and attended various inter-professional committee meetings, ground round, policy review meetings and medication safety meetings.

A “drug dealer” as a career choice sounds a bit off doesn’t it? Pharmacy Technician’s (P.T) is a very complex type of a drug dealer, but it doesn’t seem like a wrong career path to invest the time and effort into. The 3 oberservation days will occur on different days of the week to present a more accurate assessment of the ACC workflow throughout the week. Pharmacist tasks that are not included in the Comprehensive List will still be documented and tracked. Time study data will include task being completed, start/end time (measured in whole minutes), de-identified individual patient associated with task (only the randomized patient number will be recorded). To account for interruptions when completing a task, the interrupting task will be recorded as a new task line.

The pharmacy technician field continues to grow rapidly, and the pharmacy tech role is becoming more and more important. Because of my interest in Pharmacy Tech, I got the privilege to interview Dr. Hyunjoo Kil, a pharmacist at Walgreens (community pharmacy). In comparing working a community pharmacy or a hospital pharmacy, the biggest difference is in who your customers are. If you work for a big pharmacy chain, a neighborhood drug store, at a big store pharmacy, or even in a grocery store with an in-store pharmacy, you have a heavy interaction with patients who need their doctors prescriptions filled. When you work in a hospital setting, such as a nursing home, or long term care facility, your primary customers are physicians and nurses.
In the first year of the course you have two placement opportunities to reflect on the role of the community pharmacist within the multi-professional team:
The bare minimum that you need to become a pharmacist is a pharmacy Degree and to take chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, anatomy, english, humanities, and social sciences(“What Are the Education Requirements for Becoming a Pharmacist?”). Although It would be beneficial to take a few of these classes during high school so that you already know a little bit of what you are getting yourself into. The only programs that are offered at my school are arithmetic, biology, chemistry, and anatomy. It takes around four or three years of prerequisite work.then four school years in a professional program. More times than not it takes student 4 years to complete the undergraduate pre-professional courses so it takes mostly eight years. Just the thought of doing eight more years of schooling is already having me feeling perplexed. Although If you are coming from another profession related to pharmacy such as chemistry you do not need to re fulfill the prerequisite coursework, all that you need to do then is take the four
