If Phillip Malloy had sued the schools the school would have won. There were plenty of witnesses telling of what Philip did, and plenty of examples of why Philip was wrong. In all of these quotes, the witnesses of the incident are saying that Philip had done something wrong. On Page 149 Cynthia states “But he didn’t stop. And she did ask him. I guess that was the disturbance.” AVI In this quote, a witness of the incident in Miss Narwin’s room is explaining the situation. She says that Philip didn’t stop singing even after Miss Narwin had told him. Then, on Page 146 the conversation says “Dr. Doane: But you heard him? Ken Barchet: I guess. Dr. Doane: How close to Philip do you sit? Ken Barchet: ‘Cross the room.” AVI In this quote, Ken says …show more content…
On Page 83 Dr. Palleni tells Mrs. Malloy, ”Students cannot break-- cannot make a disturbance in the classroom. Straightforward rule infraction.” AVI In this quote it is shown what rule Philip Malloy had broken. He was creating a disturbance, which is why he was kicked out of the school. OnPage 1 in the memo it says “Please all rise and stand at respectful, silent attention for the playing of our national anthem.” AVI The rule that Philip broke is right on the first page in the memo. Stand at respectful, Silent attention. The rule Philip broke is right in the memo that he was sent most likely when he entered the school. He broke the rule, suspension is deserved. On Page 105 Dr. Seymour says “The answer is no. We do not have such a rule. Absolutely.” AVI This is said by Dr. Seymour while he is speaking to Jennifer Stewart. He is saying that there is no rule against singing the star spangled banner. On Page 111 the conversation states “Ms. Stewart: …. You suspended a student, Philip Malloy, for singing “The Star Spangled Banner”? Dr. Palleni: I did no such thing!” AVI In this quote, Dr. Joseph Palleni is defending himself after he is accused of suspending Philip for signing the national anthem. This shows that Palleni did not suspended Philip Malloy for singing the national anthem. He suspended him for some other reason, for creating a
Truly, I don’t know anything about this court but I did read the website of what happened but yet somehow the Tinkers won in the court case mainly because the school did not lay any good arguments on the table.
Anybody can kill innocence. Bob Ewell not only destroyed his children’s innocence. He took that not only with his pride; but with his liquor. He’s an attempted killer that shows little remorse for his actions. He only feels his pride and rage. The blood is on his hands. His own blood. He only died in vain from his original goal. Bob is basically an idiotic and prideful coward that shows little remorse for his actions.
In Robert Newton’s novel “Runner, Charlie Feehan, the 15-year-old main character, lives with his Ma and younger brother in the slums of Richmond. Charlie's father died from Spanish flu three months before the events in the novel happened, After Charlie's father died and got taken away therefore Charlie had to support his Ma. Charlie Feehan respects his family along with friends above all else.
Would you believe me if I told you a child was suspended for humming the national anthem? In the book Nothing but the Truth by Avi, that is exactly what happens to 9th grader Philip Malloy. Philip Malloy’s rights were violated because, he has the right to freedom of speech, he was suspended from school and he has the right to express his patriotism and in the book he was not allowed to do these things.
“Bartleby is blind but he sees. The lawyer has eyesight but he is blind. Unlike Bartleby, he does not know where he is. He is in prison without knowing it. He has learned nothing. He has gained no insight into himself or into his society, and he has gained no understanding of Bartleby’s rebellion. He has denied his own capacity to love. What remains is only the sentimentality that emerges in his final words of pity and self-pity. “Ah Bartleby! Ah Humanity!” (Melville, p. 45) (Shulman, p. 22)
Edward (Ned) Kelly was an infamous Australian bushranger of Irish descent that lived from 1854 to 1880. Black Snake is one of many pieces of literature that has been written based on Ned Kelly’s life. Black Snake is a historical fiction novel based on non – fictional events. Carole Wilkinson is an award- winning Australian author.
This caused the situation to get out of hand and created the main conflict in the book. Mr.Lunser asked Phillip when the Star Spangled Banner was being played, “You want to sing?” and he responded, “No” (page 150). This proves that he was lying because he said to Miss Narwin, “I was being patriotic.” (page 60). If you only hum the star spangled banner during a class with a teacher you can't stand and nowhere else than you are not patriotic. This shows that he became a dynamic character after he got what he wanted. Philip stated, “I don't know the words.” (page 177). This proved that he was lying because he told his parents that Miss narwin would not let him sing the national anthem. Then, they called reporters and made the news get out which caused a lot of character vs character conflict. He also lied to reporters that he likes to sing along, but we know this is not true because he doesn't know the words so he can't sing along. This makes him a static character because he did not change his ways of
In the short story “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” Francis is portrayed as a coward. His wife uses this to her advantage. She cheats on him and openly admits it only because she knew that he would not leave her because he was not good with women. The only reason she was with him was his money, which makes it that much easier to convince people that she purposely murdered him at the end of the story. Macomber’s newfound confidence made Margot nervous and agitated.

Many people living today don’t consider that the actions they’ve taken can have serious consequences on themselves and on other people. In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many people in the 1920s who uses unethical methods to become rich. People would steal, cheat, and/or kill just to reach the top. Francis Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 where he experiences America’s biggest economic boom. Based on his experiences living in the Roaring Twenties, there are many people who didn’t take responsibilities for the actions. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald's demonstrates that there were many characters who have no remorse for the actions they have taken. Although in the court of law, George Wilson is responsible for Gatsby’s death, people like Myrtle, Tom, and Daisy are also responsible because they could have taken actions
William Golding contends in his novel “Lord of the flies” that the dangers of evil which lurk inside all of us savagery are through the character Roger. When one considers the word savagery, specifically within the frame of william golding’s novel, savagery comes as a result of freedom and no consequences. In the novel when Roger gets stuck on the island he isn’t certainly evil in fact he is a very shy kid . Although as the story progresses we see him descending into it evilness and savagery. We see that when Roger is walking on the beach with mauris after kicking the kids sandcastle, “Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed threw it at henry….threw it to miss.”(Chapter 4) This was a sign of savagery growing inside of him. He wanted to hit
In 1974, Dwight Lopez and eight students were suspended for 10 days on behalf of destroying school property and disrupting the learning environment at Central High School in Columbus, Ohio. Lopez testified he was a bystander and he was innocent. In addition, Lopez testified approximately 75 other students were suspended as well. Lopez claimed his suspension without a hearing violated his Fourteenth Amendment right to due process. During this action, the principals did not perform hearings for none of the affected students before ordering the suspensions. Due to the students not given a hearing, the principals’ actions were challenged and a class-action suit was filed asking for declaratory and injunctive
Unfortunately, the idea of lawsuits seems to set up a chain of actions within a school district. That chain, once set in motion is very difficult to break. This seems to have been a misbegotten law suit that could have been labeled frivolous and was certainly unnecessary. The outcome of all of this legal activity was some money for George’s parents, which will undoubtedly be spent providing care to George, who will continue to have problems for the remainder of his life. This law suit allowed for delays and a
