Philippe Cousteau wants the reader to realize after reading this commentary that ocean exploration is necessary for humanity’s survival. It states in the text in lines 46-49 that “a new era of ocean exploration can yield discoveries that will help inform everything from critical medical advances to sustainable forms of energy.” This means that if we start ocean exploration, it can result in new things being found, such as new medicines or new materials that could be important for the future. Also, in lines 49-50, it states “consider that AZT, an early treatment for HIV, is derived from a Caribbean reef sponge, or that a great deal of energy-from offshore wind to OTEC (ocean thermal energy conservation), to wind and wave energy- is yet untapped in our oceans. “ This shows that in the ocean there are medicines that can help fight diseases, or find new cures for different cancers, and find new ways of collecting energy.
He wants to stop the pollution of the ocean, and wants public demand to clean the oceans before further damage is done. In lines 94-96 it states “now we need the public demand and …show more content…

“We’ve exploited and polluted our oceans at an alarming rate without dedicating the needed time or resources to truly understand the critical role they play in the future of the planet. It is not trite to say that the oceans are the life support system of this planet, providing us with up to 70 percent of our oxygen, as well as a primary source of protein for billions of people, not to mention the regulation of our climate.” From this evidence it shows that the ocean is made for keeping us alive, and if we stop polluting the ocean it can do its job better at keeping us
