To illustrate the importance of the philosophy of nursing, we have to answer all these questions. What is nursing? How does nursing evolve in our life? Why do we need to have a philosophy of nursing? According to Risjord (2010), “nursing in its broadest sense may be defined as an art and science which involves the whole patient’s body, mind, and spirit” (para 5). The discipline of nursing was not an organized profession until the middle of the 19th century. Women during the 19th century were mostly being defined and controlled by men. Depending on the women’s status in society, they may have limited or no education at all. Undeniably, mostly all women during the Victorian era were at home taking care of the family by being a mother
In order to explore my philosophy it is important that I be aware of how I would define nursing. “Definitions of nursing, like nursing itself, are dynamic; nursing is constantly evolving to meet new needs and take account of new knowledge.”(Clark, 2003, add p. # for direct quote)
Nursing should not be looked upon or practiced as a mere physical approach to healing. Nursing should encompass the aspect of restoring each individual patient to his/her maximum physical and emotional state of being. In order to achieve such a goal, a patient must be able to bond with her caregiver on a personal level (Blais & Hayes, 2011). Jean Watson’s caritas factors sets an environment where the patient can obtain optimum health benefits (Blais & Hayes, 2011). The goal of this paper is to state my philosophy of nursing, the important dynamics and values that led me to adopting this philosophy, and the reason why I choose nursing as a profession. I will further explain how Jean Watson’s principles of philosophy is
I define my philosophy of nursing within the three nursing domains of person, health, and environment. My goal is to communicate the importance of nursing as a knowledge-based career, depending not only on the nurse fulfilling her role but also on the patient’s compliance. A patient must learn to provide self-care at home in the same capacity as the nurse would provide care in the clinical setting. I discuss various subjects within nursing. I explain why I want to be a nurse, what I believe a nurse’s role is, the different domains of nursing, and where I believe nursing will be in the future. My philosophy demonstrates the interdependence of the nursing domains. You cannot fully evaluate a person without evaluating their health,
The purpose of this paper is to explore the personal nursing philosophy I intend to use in my career as a nurse and to explore my values and beliefs about the four metaparadigms – the patient, the nursing practice, their health and the environment, and the discipline of nursing in addition to discussing the nursing concepts relevant to my practice as a nurse practitioner. This paper also discusses the nurse of the future and the Synergy model definitions of the four metaparadigms and how they fit into my personal philosophy.
Nursing philosophy is defined as a nurse or students thought of what they believe to be true about the nature of the profession of nursing and to provide a base for nursing practice. (2016, para.1) The nursing field continues to develop into a professional scope of practice and nurses continue to work to develop a high standard for the profession. The values and skills that nurses’ learn as they care for patients continue to develop into rules and regulations for future nurses. As a nurse it is important to create the best environment for patients, family members and co-workers. After graduating from high school I obtained my STNA and then began my college career in the health field as a physical therapy major. This past year I transitioned to nursing after seeing how much more I am able to work directly with patients. The reasoning behind my nursing philosophy is that I have gained knowledge and love for the profession through working as a certified nurses aide for the last four years. The love for helping others and the ability to help individuals during their times of need has grown on me and developed into a passion. Through education and work experiences my philosophy will transform overtime. Currently, I believe in a nursing philosophy that states strong principals that encompass empathy, compassion, and respect towards patients and their families. In addition, nurses must stay abreast of developing health care trends, be critical thinkers and
My personal philosophy of nursing would stem from the quotation from Maya Angelou- “they may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” This statement has always stood out to me pertaining to nursing. Nursing is an art form that must include compassion, caring, honesty, and patient care. Every single day as a nurse you are dealing with a patient’s life. You must have the listed qualities to perform your care for the patient properly.
What nursing is defined as in my opinion, is more of a philosophy. I see nursing as a combination of beliefs and ideals that revolve around the concepts of compassion, integrity, and sacrifice. I have always viewed nurses as caring and compassionate towards their patents. There is a quality in their personalities in that they truly care about who they are working with. Nurses are also ones who can be trusted, as you know that they regard their job to the highest degree. Nurses will not compromise, and will do whatever necessary to ensure the health of their patients. Sacrifice is another concept I associate with nursing. Nurses put their patients above themselves and will gladly go out of their way to ensure their wellness. If I had

The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.
In this paper I will explore the elements of nursing theory and how I believe they are all tied together. I believe that a man’s health will be directly affected by his environment and his nursing care.
In the 19th century, a woman's place was in the home. Although a small numbers of women were attending university and creating a career for themselves. Still most women's lives were restricted to the home and the tiring physical work of maintaining a house and raising a family. Women were seen as emotional, weak and unable to make decisions.
The first of the three philosophy models that will be utilized in this program will be the cognitive based philosophy. The cognitive-based philosophy focuses on content and factual information with the intent to increase knowledge within a population. This philosophy is pertinent to the program due to the program’s emphasis on educational efforts to increase awareness of the problem of infant mortality and instruct the at risk population of the steps they can take to minimize their risk. This will be accomplished specifically within this program through offering educational prenatal and perinatal classes in free clinics and within the community that aim to teach young expecting mothers of the risks of infant mortality within their economic demographic and prenatal coaching on practices that will increase their likelihood of a healthy baby such as proper diet, breastfeeding practices, and other lifestyle choices. This class will be advertised within the community through flyers in high traffic areas for young expecting mothers in a lower socioeconomic class such as: social workers office, pharmacies,
As a second career and long sought after goal that has now come true, as a nurse, my philosophy is to always smile even in the darkest of times treat my patient the way I want to be treated should life place their shoes on my feet. As of today, this method has proven successful for me because it creates an opening for true relationships to occur and healing whether physical or spiritual to begin. To quote Hildegard Peplau, nursing is a “significant, therapeutic, interpersonal process (Gonzalo, 2011).”
Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process. Nursing includes adapting to a patient’s and their family’s physical, social, spiritual, environmental and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family’s needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts “while critical thinking, decision-making, and leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion, competence, faith, integrity and responsibility” (p. 291).
