Is drug addiction is a disease, not a choice? Or it is a choice and not a disease? Drug Addiction has become a serious issue in society today, with an increase in controversy leading towards the topic of whether drug addiction is a disease or a choice. Addiction and disease are two different things and understanding them is very important when it comes to drugs and how it affects the mind and body. Several people tend to jump the gun and think that drug addiction is a disease, when in fact it is a choice. Some scientists believe that that drug addiction is a disease and to an extent that it makes people powerless to control its prevalence, on the other hand some scientists believe that addiction is a choice and that people have
In “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe,” the author, Benjamin Alire Sáenz uses the backdrop of 1980s El Paso, Texas as a way to set up the protagonist’s journey in finding his true identity. Sáenz writes about love, familial relationships, identity, gender, and how they connect characters in the novel. Through his use of external and internal conflict with regards to Ari, Dante, and society, Sáenz illustrates how societal gender norms placed upon people cause them to struggle to find their true identity.
I became interested in the Addictions Lab, because of Dr. Lara Ray. She was my Psych 127B professor and her class was one of the best Psychology classes I have ever taken. She talked about some of the work that the lab is doing and it took my attention. Consequently, I looked at the website and read some of the articles, which was even more interesting for me.
When Regan meets Dante, he is everything she could ask for--except he is definitely not submissive, and he certainly wants her to submit to him.
“Behold the beast on whose account I turned: from her protect me, O thou famous Sage,” writes Dante, “for she makes both my veins and pulses tremble”.
Tricheurs is a movie directed by Barbet Schroder. This follows the same style as the works Schroder directed before this point. He is not a director that puts out a large amount of movies. He had put out seven as a director between 1969 and 1986. His first movie was called “More” and came out in 1969. It was a melodrama that was quite romantic. The look of the film was stunning. It was set in Majorca and was about heroin addiction. He took a look at a tough topic and made it understandable. He made it human. In ''Maitresse'' in 1975 he made a romantic comedy. Not the average romantic comedy but one that revolves around sado-masochism. He brought a dark humor to the subject and yet brought seriousness to the subject that most filmmakers don’t even try to convey. Tricheurs definitely belongs in this line up.
He is a man that in love tragically but here is a irony. He loves Beatrice , we are not sure if he wants to come together with her because he doesn’t show any signs of it . He just talks about her , her supremacy but maybe he doesn’t dream of getting together with her , one day . Love , for Dante means ; loving anything , a material , an animal or a human is loving God . It is indirect or direct , everything you love
And the orders for Virgil don't come from just Beatrice. The Virgin Mary herself is so upset by Dante’s predicament that she cried buckets for him and then sent for her very best friend, St. Lucia, to carry
Phiscie shook her head, urging her to leave. Soon she did, realizing that it would be best to let them be. When they looked up, Dante’s once flushed face wore a look similar to the stray cat that made hourly visits around their
After one of his visions, Dante struggled with conflicting thoughts of Love, that disturbed his peace of mind, “The domination of Love is a good thing because he guides the mind of his faithful followers away from all unworthiness, [and] The domination of Love is not good because the more faithfully a follower serves him, the more burdensome and grievous are the moments he must endure.” (XIII, 5). Dante is articulating Love to be a man and a higher power, i.e God. He struggles with his Love for Beatrice because he is overwhelmed with emotion when she is present; much like someone would feel in the presence of God. This is why he feels conflicted. He also speaks of Beatrice as
Addiction- a primary, chronic, neurobiologic disease, with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. It is characterized by behaviors that include one or more of the following: impaired control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm, and craving. The difference between addiction and abuse is often times unclear. It’s a difficult call to make as a family member or a close friend that is dealing with a person like this in their life, but ultimately it is a call that only the addict can make for themselves. There are tons of different sources and tests and questions out there that can be done that can
“Then I turned to them again to speak and I begun: ‘Francesca, your torments make me weep for grief and pity, ‘but tell me, in that season of sweet sighs, how and by what signs did Love acquaint you with your hesitant desire?” (Canto 5.115-120). Dante expresses this to show how sorry for her or for them he feels.
Relationships come in many forms with varying troubles and blessings. In the book, The Divine Comedy, two of the main characters, Virgil and Dante, can have a seemingly simple relationship, but when closely examined and reflected on, it is actually quite complex. They venture through the depths of hell, the complications of a long journey, and the perplexing reality of purgatory. Throughout their relationship they are faced with different gains and trials that they react to in various ways. Their circumstances are always changing and the course is rough, but throughout the entirety of their venture together, there remains one constant element, and that is the love they share in their relationship. It is outwardly expressed through their actions and words throughout the entirety of the book.
Desire strikes a search for power. Dante writes “we live on in desire” implying that we live through desire (20). Each one of us chases a desire during our journey through life. Small children desire toys to entertain them, and the more toys a child has the more powerful they feel. I do not remember the time when I was an infant, but from watching children and observing my cousins, I see this feeling of power every day. Dante shows us a consequence of searching for power through desire when we meet Francesca and Paulo, and he says “oh, how much desiring brought these two down into this agony” (30). Sometimes the worldly desires we wish for do not end with what we expect. Francesca did not think about what would happen to her or Paulo for following their passion. She never expected to be thrown into Hell and be haunted by her desire for eternity. Dante has a desire for love with Beatrice until she dies and Dante is left without the true flame in his heart. Dante yearns for Beatrice every day and desires the love they once shared. Later on Dante’s journey, the love for Beatrice grows as Dante realizes she will be waiting to guide him once he
this is the value she will have so long a she sleeps with him. He
