More than a century ago, Mark Twain penned a famous line neatly distilling the distinct cultures of three of the largest cities in the Northeastern United States. “In Boston they ask, ‘How much does he know?’ In New York, ‘How much is he worth?’ In Philadelphia, ‘Who are his parents?’.” Although these cities are hundreds of miles away from my focus, the fundamentals are parallel.

My photography project, “Rural America Living: The Untouched Communities” will consist of a detailed dissection of twelve selected rural communities in rural Missouri. This project will then be presented in a hardcover photography book and exhibition. For each of the communities I’ve selected the process will remain the same. I will spend a week in the life, “shadowing” selected families in each town and spending an additional two weeks living in the town as if I was a native experiencing and involving myself. All while documenting through my photography, the characteristics that make each unique. I have made arrangements with selected families to live with them for a solid week to capture authentic traits. Placing myself in the center of these lifestyles is the only way I feel I can truly deliver the best project possible, that will reflect directly onto rural

Many thrive on having the latest model of technology. Most seat on the edge of their seats or more appropriately camp outside retail stores wanting to spend extra money to purchase a certain product the moment it becomes available. This mindset is quite the opposite within the rural communities I’ve choose to reveal this throughout my project. Technology is seeping into their world’s and each society deals with the evolution differently. Some carefully select only items that are needed for specific professions, while others find these “luxury” items completely useless for their content
