Introduction The Physalia physalis also known as the Portuguese man of war can be described as a luminescent colorful sea creature of the ocean. Although many may confuse it as a jellyfish it is actually a siphonophore which is a colony of organisms working together. The scientific name of my organism is Physalia physalis. It’s more commonly known as the Portuguese man-of-war or bluebottles. I live in Navarre, Florida and I came across this beautiful organism while it washed up on shore at the Navarre beach. You can find them in the open ocean in the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean. Background The Portuguese man-of-war is a floating hydrozoan it is also a Siphonophore, which is an organism that consists
The Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia), is common to be spotted in warmer waters around the world. Its tentacles can grow up to 165 feet and have a plastic like “sail” that floats on the surface. In

The only organism in the included area is the termite so that is the common name for the class reticulitermes.
Art has been around as far back as we can document. It is a way to learn about people and events that happened in the past, as well as to get impressions of what different cultures found important or intriguing. Significant military leaders, like Marcus Aurelius and Simon Bolivar, were immortalized through works of art by way of sculptures, paintings, portraits, temples, coins, and many other forms. Their triumphs, victories, as well as their character and beliefs were captured for future generations to study and learn about their accomplishments. Both Marcus Aurelius and Simon Bolivar were looked to for guidance, and leadership. While both men fought wars for reasons of their own, they were worshipped by
One of the bloodiest conflicts in U.S history that occurred in the 17th century was Metacom's war (also known as King Philip's War). In Proportion to the population, it is also recognized as the deadliest war in American history. By the end of the war, the English population of New England had declined by thirty percent and the Native Americans population declined more than twice the percent as the English. The dreadful war was a violent and destructive conflict, which was triggered by the devotion of maintaining cultural identity and preserving authority and power, both in religious and society capacities in which one believed to be his land. As a result, this crisis has impacted Americans and the culture of themselves for many years. This essay will analyze the history of Metacom's war chronology from June 1675-August 1676 informing the readers with knowledge about King Philip, the cause and effects of the conflict, and the impact it has made towards Americans.
Moon Jellyfish are in the “Animalia Kingdom, Phylum Cnidarian, Class Scyphozoan, Order Semaeostomeae, Family Ulmaridae, and Genus Aurelia” ( Myers, 2016 ; Espinosa, ; 2016 ; Parr, 2016 ; Jones, 2026 ; Hammond, 2016 ; Dewey, 2016). The morphological description of Cnidarians are corals, sea anemones, jellyfish and hydroids. These cnidarians form a diverse phylum that contains ~9000 species, which live in aquatic (predominantly marine) environments. The phylum-defining trait of Cnidaria is the stinging cell, the nematocyte an extrusive organelle used for predation, adhesion and defense (Holstein, 1981; Lengfeld et al., 2009; Tardent and Holstein, 1982) (Steele and Technau; 2011). Also, this phylum, Cnidarians, are divided into two groups, “Anthozoa (sea anemones, corals and sea pens), which live as
The situation for Jewish soldiers described by the corpus falls in line with the situation in Egypt under Ptolemaic rule. Because they faced military problems due to a lack of Hellenic manpower, the Ptolemaic Kings had to enlist a large number of native Egyptians and other foreigners into their armies (Kasher 106). Jewish men from Alexandria and even more form the chora were welcomed into the Ptolemaic army, since they filled the increasing need for soldiers. Under Onias IV, a Jewish immigrant from Jerusalem, and his sons Jelkias and Ananias, Jews constituted a majority of the units under their command (Kasher 107). Most importantly, when a Jew became a soldier in the Ptolemaic army, they did not only receive wages for their service. As early
In the play “The Pot of Gold” was hinting towards some social criticism, but mainly Plautus was writing for comedy. From had reading Plautus’s plays one gets a sense of what life was like during (time he was alive), and a better understanding of why he felt the need to write comedy rather than Greek tragedy. Plautus wrote many plays, but the plays that will be focused on are “The Pot of gold”, “The Prisoners”, “The Bothers Menaechums”, and lastly “The swaggering Soldier”.
On the morning of April 19, 1775, about 700 British troops arrived in the town of Lexington from Boston on their march to Concord; seventy-seven American militiamen met them on the town’s green. A British Army officer yelled to the militiamen to “Throw down your arms! Ye villains, ye rebels!” (Fighting Breaks Out, n.d.). An officer within the militia ranks gave the order for the militia to disperse. A single musket shot rang out from an unknown source shortly after the militia began to leave the field. The British unit then fired several volleys at the American militiamen. Eight American militiamen were dead, and nine lay wounded when the engagement was over. The British suffered one
Throughout the course of history there have been many great and powerful civilizations. These civilizations made their way to power in many ways including military force, great wealth, and politics. These civilizations include the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Romans, and in more recent times, the United States of America. Another civilization that is often mentioned to be a part of this prestigious group is that of the Ancient Greeks. The primary reason being the Ancient Greek’s military advancement made them superior to the other ancient armies of the time allowing their civilization to grow.

Following Poliakoff’s introduction to the ancient combat sports, he proceeds to provide a basic outline to the world of ancient combat sports in a series of sections within the chapter, including: The definition of a ‘combat sport’ and its relation to recreation and training; similarities amongst combat sports, training methods and common practise; the premise of athletic festivals, and the organization of said competition.
War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, written by the talented author Chris Hedges, gives us provoking thoughts that are somewhat painful to read but at the same time are quite personal confessions. Chris Hedges, a talented journalist to say the least, brings nearly 15 years of being a foreign correspondent to this book and subjectively concludes how all of his world experiences tie together. Throughout his book, he unifies themes present in all wars he experienced first hand. The most important themes I was able to draw from this book were, war skews reality, dominates culture, seduces society with its heroic attributes, distorts memory, and supports a cause, and allures us by a
Plautus’ The Swaggering Soldier, written at roughly 250 BC, is about a disgraced soldier named Pyropoligonices who boasts about all of his great accomplishments in the battlefield as well as in the bedroom, when in reality he is nothing but a coward. His boastful cowardice comes out at the end of the play when he is being beaten up by slaves and makes a promise by saying, “Yes! I swear by Jupiter and Mars, I’ll never harm a soul. And my beating up today – I grant it was my just reward. As a favour, let me leave with testimony to my manhood” (Plautus). When he is being beaten up, he no longer acts like the strong, slayer of men he made himself out to be. He is just a coward. Shakespeare himself was well aware of Plautus and The Braggart Soldier when writing many of his plays and constructing the characters within them. The Braggart Soldier came in especially when writing the character of Falstaff for his play Henry IV to the point where Falstaff is a direct descendant of The Braggart Soldier himself, Pyrgopolynices. Falstaff, Prince Hal’s right hand man in Henry IV, does share many similarities with Pyrgopolynices but as there are many similarities there are also a lot of differences. As it is clear that Shakespeare did get some inspiration for Falstaff from Plautus, Pyrgopolynices are very different characters and the end of it all.
