Introduction L.F., is a 74 year old female with limited mobility, and a history of falls (and at risk for falls), who was diagnosed with age-related osteoporosis, a lumbar compression fracture, collapsed vertebra, and she also suffers from morbid obesity. Resident was admitted to a long-term care facility in 2010, and remains there presently. In my clinical experience with the resident I noted a lack of physical activity. Papa (2012) of the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association stated, “Physical activity plays a critical role in the rehabilitation of osteoporotic patients with vertebral fractures (p. 36).” Due to her lumbar compression fracture, osteoporosis, and other conditions her mobility is limited. Other risk factors involve small stature, early menopause, underweight, low dietary calcium and vitamin D, anorexia, malabsorption, history of smoking, extreme alcohol consumption, and hyperparathyroidism (Crowther-Radulewics & McCance, 2012). Causes of osteoporosis vary, however the developing process of the disease is the same, which occurs during the remodeling cycle of the bone in which disruption of formation and resorption takes place (Crowther-Radulewics & McCance, 2012). Jarvis (2016) discusses that the bones most often affected, are those of the wrist, hip, and spine. Perhaps L.F.’s lumbar compression fracture, collapsed vertebra, and a history of falling is related to her age-related osteoporosis. Jarvis (2016) additionally described the principal issue of life with osteoporosis is the increased risk of fractures. History L.F. is a 74 year old female with major concerns of limited mobility, a high risk for falls, who was diagnosed with age-related osteoporosis, a lumbar compression fracture, collapsed vertebra, and she also suffers from morbid obesity.
