About 60 to 70 percent of Americans do not get enough exercise (CDC ). Due to that, there is a huge percentage of Americans who don’t get enough exercise therefore, I am going to create a gym for teens and adults to enjoy. Health is important in many ways. One reason why exercising is important is because it is a struggle for most teens to get a certain amount of exercise. Exercise has many benefits such as physical and mental benefits. Which help people get more active and more aware of their surroundings. These benefits can help a person go further in life. Exercise also has benefits to prevent one from having a risk of getting a disease. Did you know that about 17 percent or 12.7 million children and adolescents from the age of two throw the age of nineteen are obese? (JAMA). In the paper I will be discussing the physical and mental benefits of getting exercise as well as how exercising can prevent diseases, and also I will be discussing what would be in the gym I plan to open and how I plan on opening it. Many teens do not get enough exercise, but exercise does have benefits such as physical and mental benefits as well as reducing the rate of getting a disease. Physical health is an important factor for a teen. A teenage should exercise but not too intense. Which means that one should not exercise too much that one would feel sick to his or her stomach. A teen should work for strength and it is best to do different types of exercise. Physical health is based on
For years, Americans have been told that exercising and staying active is imperative to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In general, this fact holds true for all generations and age groups, including the youth of today. Children simply need to exercise and participate in more physical activities in order to maintain a high level of health. The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools suggests that, “one of the leading causes of this epidemic (childhood obesity) is a marked decline in physical activity and athletic participation” (“Athletics in Schools”). Childhood fascinations with watching television, playing video games, and browsing the internet are just a few of the sedentary hobbies taking over children’s free time to be active. Therefore, mandating physical activities in schools across the country will effectively reduce the frequency of this major, obesity health crisis in young students. Understandably, a plethora of factors cause and influence children to become overweight and obese, but working to fix each evident problem will, in the end, contribute to finally ending the developing childhood health crisis.
Participation in youth sports in the United States is on the rise. “Organized youth sports are highly popular for youth and their families, with approximately 45 million children and adolescent participants in the US” (Merkel, 2013). There are many benefits for children that can be attributed to sports such as: physical activity, learning motor skills, sense of belonging, stress relief, and many more. With childhood obesity on the rise recreational sports has never been needed more than it is today. “Over the past three decades, the incidence of obesity in children has tripled, with one of every three children being affected” (Merkel, 2013). Obesity has many long-term health problems related to it such as: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure cancer, asthma. We can attribute this health problem to changes in our society over like increased technology, increased crime rates, fast food and isolated suburban neighborhoods. Sports and other physical activities are needed to keep children from causing further damaged to their future.
Healthy People implemented an extensive list of physical activity objectives targeting youth of all ages. The objectives are all aimed at promoting the health benefits of maintaining a physically active life-style. The following objective targets a major area of concern for the medical community and the increase of inactivity among today's youth; “PA-8.2.2; Increase the proportion of children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 years who view television, videos, or play video games for no more than 2 hours a
As mentioned previously, exercise is seen as one of the cornerstones of a healthy life. A review of 86 scientific papers concerning exercise benefits in school age children, conducted by Janssen and Leblanc, found that children aged 15-17 “should accumulate an average of at least 60 minutes per day and up to several hours of at least moderate intensity physical activity”(Janssen and Leblanc, 1). In fact, even a more modest level of activity would be sufficient in battling health risks, such as
Not only do schools offer unhealthy foods for children, but most do not offer the required amount of physical activity. Most adolescents fall short of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommendation of at least one hour of aerobic activity every day. Only 18% of students in high school met that recommendation in 2007. All schools need to require some sort of a physical activity class. In 2009 only 33% took daily physical education classes. (CDC 2) Needless to say, schools play a very crucial role in the problem of childhood obesity. Physical Activity in schools could be a huge key in helping fix this problem.
Obesity is a growing concern in Australian society. This is a problem that needs to be addressed in a way that makes teenagers want to stay fit and healthy. The Australian Government recommends people aged 13 -17 to get at least one hour of exercise each and everyday, and three of these days should be doing exercises to enhance a person's physical strength. People struggle to achieve this goal as they have other commitments such as school, study, lack of time, money, poor weather and much more. Ways to exercise while maintaining the other commitments is to potentially do small vigorous intervals of working out over the course of the day. However, for money, you can always go for a run or do some dancing inside as this is free and you can take your time. This intervention is the solution to the issues we are currently facing. The intervention will strengthen the muscles as well as provide general fitness in a short amount of time and it is free and can be done in many places.
America's children are not getting enough exercise, and the health risks due to obesity are becoming epidemic in nature. Even First Lady Michelle Obama is supporting an initiative to help children become more active and to provide for exercise (at least 30-60 minutes per day) in all schools. Even limited amounts of exercise can have great health benefits. When humans exercise, the brain produces chemicals that help enhance mood, limit cravings for sugars, and contribute to healthier joints, muscles, the heart, and kidneys. In turn, this translates into more productive work time, the ability to sleep better, increase memory, and reduce dependence on medications. Children are so vulnerable to this health risk that if it continues, over 60% of graduating seniors will be clinically obese. Written by a medical journalist, the book is designed for the lay reader but has a number of documented scholarly sources.
"It is well known that routine physical activity benefits both body and mind", Neighbond says, however, most teens today get no exercise through out the day. That's why we need to start getting kids and teens to exercise daily. Exercise is something that everyone needs to start doing especially teens because it helps benefit their mood, their self-esteem, and helps with their health.
By the time that they get older, their bodies will be worn down. Sports are unbeneficial for young teens health, some major issues of sports is that it causes young athletes that overuse their bodies causing a variety of issues now and later. Statistics also show that most sport playing teens want scholarships but there are not nearly s many scholarships for everyone that plays. And finally sports can ruin their future by causing a long term problem. Sports is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with.
Lisa Mooney says that physical education raises endorphin levels in ones body which helps reduce stress. Stress can affect behavior, as well as other things such as health problems like high blood pressure. By reducing stress form physical activity, people can avoid health crisis such as heart disease. Kristine Tucker agrees that good health can prevent illnesses such as osteoporosis, cancer, hearth disease, and diabetes. All these illnesses could negatively affect health strongly in not noticed immediately. From this information it is evident that by making gym mandatory. Children can avoid bad health situations. Equally important is the fact that students should get 3 hours and 45 minutes of gym class a week says the Society of Health and Physical Educators. In other words, without PE most kids would not get enough physical activity in a week. PE helps keep students physically on track. Ella Sarwal, a student believes that students should have PE everyday be issue of the health benefits. She also says that many students have other
Over the last 30-40 years, the amount and intensity of exercise has gradually declined. Few children in the United States have actually met the recommended “sixty minutes of vigorous exercise” per day (Institute of Medicine, 2013). Although most states and districts have policies pertaining to physical education, these programs lack reinforcement and are often considered weak. Physical education has slowly declined throughout the years, and the the purpose of encouraging students to make physical activity part of their daily lifestyle has been lost. Recent research from Cornell University has found that the average high school gym class consists of students being active for an average of only sixteen minutes! This is nowhere near the recommended sixty minutes of physical exercise. Physical education has been pushed to the side while academics have been prioritised. P.E. classes have become overlooked by society as a whole. Students simply see it as a courses used only for socializing, or to avoid academic courses such as Algebra, Biology, and History. While teachers no longer encourage students to be active, this should not be the path in which we take physical education. The importance of exercise and physical activity goes beyond the classroom with is proven benefits in memory, cognition and attention which are skills that can be used for daily life activities. In recent times, many programs are popping up across the country to emphasize the importance of being active!
Physical Activity relates to Healthy People 2020 because it accomplishes to having a higher quality of life, living longer, preventing diseases from occurring, disabilities, injuries, and premature death. The objectives for targeted adolescents are having physical activity to improve bone health, cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, higher self-esteem the reduction of the symptoms of depression.
The importance of fitness during the teens years is the most important thing in a teens life, during your teen years your metabolism slows down by how old you get. As a kid your metabolism was fast, that's why most kids were active during those years but once you start going to school it starts to decrease. " Children in school for example were most active from 2pm to 6pm, which could reflect the fact that they are sitting in a classroom for most of the day until mid afternoon" (Park 5). Also "Kids may not be getting much exercise because they are not getting enough sleep and are too tired to be physically active" (Park 5). Kids probably don't get enough sleep due to cell phones, video games, and eating sugar at night causing
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Two-thirds of adults and nearly one in three children are overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. more than doubled from 15% to 34% among adults and more than tripled from 5% to 18% among children and adolescents from 1980 to now. (Brunilda Nazario). These facts should startle you and quite frankly shock and scare you! It is estimated by the year 2020 obesity will be the single biggest killer on the planet. (World Health Organization) Obesity has become a dangerous epidemic facing our country. As children, teen and adult obesity rates have risen dramatically, so has the number of diet, exercise and health programs. The question is which diets and exercise programs work, and which ones don’t. Educating our country about how to become healthier through different programs and lifestyles is an important step in fixing this serious problem.
Physical activity is essential for children; therefore sport participation has many physical benefits for youths (Willox, 1994). In the United States there is a very unhealthy trend of physically unfit children going on. According to a recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health seven out of ten kids in our nation are out of shape and the incidence of obesity has increased by more than 50 percent among America's children and teen since 1976 and continues to grow at a staggering rate (Metzel & Shookhoff, 2006). When children participate in sports activities they get some of the exercise they need to improve their quality of life and can help prevent children from becoming obese. Physical activity regulates obesity because it increases energy expenditure, suppresses appetite, increases metabolic rate, and increases lean body mass (Willox, 1994). Even though regular physical sport activity has been shown to improve physical fitness, it can also help in preventing many different health problems down the line that youths who participate in sports are more likely not to develop than youths who do not participate in sports. Women who participated in organized sport and fitness programs as
