Development stages of Pre-Kindergarten Children The developmental stages for Pre-Kindergarten students vary greatly due to the immense growth a child goes through during this time. This is the time of rapid physical and mental growth by multiple measures (Anthony). Physical abilities of fine and gross motor skills are learned and built upon day in and day out. Their cognitive skills go from just doing to thinking about what they’re doing before, during, and after they act/react. And one of the biggest changes is the social and emotional development they go throughout these early years. They start the transition to be less dependent on their parents and more dependent on teachers and peers. The physical development consists of fine/gross motor skills, body awareness, and physical health. By the time they start pre-kindergarten, their brain is close to 50% of the adult weight, and by the age of 6 it has grown approximately 90% of its full weight (NRCPFC). This is why children’s heads may seem non-proportionate to their bodies. At the age of 3 they start learning how to enhance their fine motor skills through repetitive exercises such as using and cutting with scissors, holding and using pencils with fingers instead of gripping it with their whole hand, and fine-tuning hand eye coordination by manipulating small objects such as connecting building blocks together, matchboxes through mazes, and putting puzzles together.
