The physical injuries endured by athletes such as boxers, football players, hockey players, and rugby players caused the Americans, who are in charge of safety and regulations of these sports, to become stringent with the way these athletes participate in these physical contact sports to enforce the importance of wearing the required protective equipment. Boxers were the first to be seen with the disease of CTE which is chronic traumatic encephalopathy along with other physical injuries such as broken bones, internal bleeding, minor injuries including busted lips and swollen eyes. The act that was first passed because of the safety issues was in 1983 by the AMA American Medical Association who observed and believed that there was many potential
Axel and skeleton frame injuries are something that are very common in the world of sports. The National Football Ledge(NFL) has a foundation of physical impact and is very strenuous on the axel and skeletal frame. Thoracic disc herniations in the one of the most common injuries the NFL and it requires the greatest amount of time to recover which is 189 days. Thou the injury is very high in football nearly 15 percent of American suffer from Thoracic Disc Herniation. Degeneration the most common cause of Thoracic disc herniation “As a disc's annulus ages, it tends to crack and tear. These injuries are repaired with scar tissue. Over time the annulus weakens, and the nucleus may squeeze (herniate) through the damaged annulus. Spine degeneration
if his return to training date keeps getting put back, watching his team mates play in important games your missing out on
In June of 2012 over 2,000 retired NFL players filed a lawsuit against the NFL on the terms of blurring the science of brain trauma (Foster). The retired athletes sued the association due to complications they began to suffer from repetitive head on head collisions in their practices and games that led to brain trauma. In response to the lawsuit, the NFL manipulated its rules but athletes are still at a risk of severe TBIs, or traumatic brain injuries, every time they step on the field. The NFL needs to enforce stricter fouls for head-on-head collisions, more preventative equipment, improved coaching techniques for tackles, and educational head-injury courses in order to decrease the amount of brain trauma and fatalities in the players.
Since the 1920s, there has been a severe disease linked to athletes. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a disease that effects athletes that have had head trauma. The trauma causes the brain tissue to deteriorate. The changes can become apparent after months, years, or even decades. CTE is linked to memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and, eventually, progressive dementia. (“What”, 2009). CTE has caused football to change as well as the equipment. CTE is now widely known and is effecting, not only professional athletes, but also high school athletes. Concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy are serious conditions that can affect anyone and have adverse effects.
Grade 2 injuries result in symptoms of moderate to severe pain with severe difficulty in walking. The athlete is unlikely to be able to play on and will often limp heavily. Minor bruising and swelling may present immediately but can take several hours (up to 48) to develop. The ankle will feel very stiff but may also feel unstable resulting from a number of torn ligament fibers (this can be tested more accurately by a professional therapist). Recovery time for a moderate ankle sprain (grade 2) takes between 4 and 8 weeks.
Many people believe that concussions are just a head injury that causes headaches, but it’s more than that, so much more than that! In my recent research over Concussions, more importantly, concussions due to sports related occurrences, and the side effects.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or better known as CTE has gained momentum in areas of public awareness and scientific involvement in recent years due to the popularized sport on American Football. During recent years, the media has been swaying and educating the public on the adverse outcomes that CTE can initiate. However, the first discovery of this disease was diagnosed by pathologist Harrison Martland and can be related back to the late 1920’s; the first true cases were identified in the physical sport of boxing. During that time, CTE was commonly known as dementia pugilistica meaning “punch drunk” from the wobbly nature of boxers during repetitive hits to the head.1,2 It was determined that dementia pugilistica (also known as boxer’s
This evidence based practice article explores the persistent concussive symptoms (symptoms lasting more than 90 days post-injury) in students from middle school, high school, and college that obtain many sport-related concussions. The studies by Harmon et al (2013) and Doolan, Day, Maerlender, Goforth & Brolinson (2012), found that just in the United states alone, there are over a million concussions every year and there are at least 50% of the concussions that are not reported. One that acquires a concussion will go through neurocognitive testing, see a physician, and go through screenings and more. Although these methods for management are being done to treat a concussion, there is not any evidence based practice to say that those methods are actually working. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore multiple treatment options, clinical rationale, and outcomes for each treatment. There were 24 cases a clients that were referred the Clinic at the University of Oregon for persistent concussive symptoms related to a sports injury. There were 14 women and 10
The most vivid injury in my mind is one that still shows today on my right ankle.
The lack of education regarding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is causing many athletes to have severe medical problems. ALS affects every part of your body except your brain and also impacts physical function. CTE attacks only your brain and not your body. Young athletes with a history of repeated head trauma have higher risks of getting these diseases. These diseases are more common in contact sports. Concussions and head traumas are two huge factors to ALS and CTE. Multiple hits to the head are what cause concussions and head trauma. Due to the risks of ALS and CTE’s, safety precautions should be increased without changing the rules of the game.
Traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, are common in Georgia, and throughout the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1.7 million people across the U.S. sustain this type of injury each year. Traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, are often associated with sports. However, people often suffer head and brain injuries on the job. For workers, the symptoms and lasting effects of head trauma may make it difficult to return to work.
A gunshot wound is one of the most horrific injuries that can be inflicted on the human body. The bullet causes massive amounts of trauma when it hits a dense human body. The high velocity means that when it strikes a person, it imparts a massive amount of energy into blowing organs and blood vessels apart. They get severely damaged, and even if a surgeon manages to control blood loss, the patient often dies due to the physical damage from the tearing and blowing apart caused by a bullet impact. My question is what if there was a way to give a surgeon more time to try to fix that damage? Would it decrease deaths from an abdomen wound?
This paper focuses on the prevention and treatment of injuries in basketball. This paper explores the basic concepts of preventing injuries and the different methods to treat injuries that occur as a result of playing basketball. There are a variety of preventive measures to limit injuries at recreational, collegiate and professional levels of playing basketball. This paper will elaborate on specific approaches to injury prevention for each circumstance. Depending on the duration and intensity of play many contributing factors play a role in the prescribed treatment of basketball injuries. This paper will examine the different types of treatment available and the major factors that are considered based on case by case basis. Basketball is an enjoyable sport with the risk of minor and major injury. This paper will give insight into those injuries and remedies to treat and prevent them.
There are many people who don’t think sports are just a hobby, but something that intrigues people, and love doing it. There are many risks that may come with playing this specific sport. There have been many head injuries that have occurred because of head to head contact, along with other injuries than have lead people to death. Maybe only people who are properly prepared should able to play this dangerous sport.
Injuries play a big role in an athlete's career and his or her overall health, although minor injuries are often nothing to worry about they can lead to something serious especially if the injury is repeatedly being aggravated. scrapes, cuts, bruises, and broken bones are all things to worry about. When a player is injured he or she is losing play time and money and why risk this when there is small but giant steps that can be taken to prevent injuries. But brain injuries are something much more serious even if the player says not to worry because something worse than losing playtime is losing your life. Albert C. hergenroeder has written an article on preventing sports injuries, he says that there are 3 million sports injuries among kids around
