Physical Therapy Career Paper

I am excited about the opportunity to attend the University of Vermont Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. As a Sports Science major and student athlete in cross country skiing and running, I have gained significant experience with human motion analysis and am extremely interested in the Human Performance Center at the University of Vermont. Additionally, I am impressed by the emphasis on integrating research findings to improve clinical care of patients.

Body mechanics has always been a source of great interest to me from a very young age. I was homeschooled from my elementary years through high-school, and my favorite subjects were always anatomy and health sciences. I disticnly remeber a antomy coloring book I had during 4th grade. I always wanted to read and color the muscle sections only.

After years of pounding and thousands of miles as a competitive runner I have personally experienced multiple overuse injuries. My first real exposure to physical therapy was through sports. However, my interest into the field goes far beyond the athletic side. I have always been fascinated by the body. Once I started to think about body mechanics and the force put on the body; I realized how everything is connected and that the human body truly is an amazing machine.

After hearing what David had to say, it opened my eyes to the life of not only a Physical Therapist, but also a business owner. The amount of information I was given about the career appealed to me greatly but the thought and pressure of becoming a business owner frightened me. After talking to David I realized that I do have the passion to succeed in this field, but in order to grow and become a successful Physical Therapist I will need to be willing to spend all my time and effort into building my reputation. In order to be successful in the profession as a physical therapist there are several prerequisites a person has to accomplish. One of the first prerequisites to become a physical therapist is you must graduate from a physical therapist educational program and obtain a master or doctoral degree. The master's degree programs for physical therapy typically are two to two and a half years in length, while doctoral degree programs usually last 3 years. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, students will complete supervised clinical experience to get a feel of the work environment. The coursework will include physics, biology and chemistry. Other additional coursework included during the physical therapy program is therapeutic procedures, biomechanics, examination techniques, human development, manifestations of disease, and neuroanatomy. The career that I chose to researched was a physical therapist. Physical therapist are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain. Physical therapist also improve or restore mobility - in many cases without expensive surgery and often reducing the need for long-term use of prescription medications and their side effects. There were many steps taken to complete research on this career.

Ever since I was young I knew I wanted to work with and help others. Now at that young age I imagined being a teacher or a veterinarian. As I’ve grown older I’ve discovered both those careers weren’t exactly what I wanted. My dreams have changed slightly but I do still have the same dream of helping others. I hope to go into the medical field and become a physical therapist. Physical therapy is a career that not only reaches my goal of helping others but reaches other goals I have developed as I’ve grown up. One thing I know now is that I want to be someone who helps people get back on track and become their best self. Along with that I hope to help prevent future injuries and issues.

As a college student it is very important to find your dream job or career after college. In order to proceed you career you need to have the skills and qualities in this career. When I graduate college, I would like to become a physical therapist. I chose this career because I want to help people with injuries. Being a college student is tough and have many weaknesses in the physical therapy field, but as I overcome them in my college career I will turn those weaknesses into strengths.

Physical Therapy is a medical specialty that restores the functions of the human body in such a way that the patient’s quality of life and health perception reaches its greatest exponent. Physical Therapy promotes the mobility of the human body through physical intervention ensuring the patient’s adequate healthiness. Physical Therapy is a science that helps healing, recovering and adapting patients with physical dysfunctions.

With every job comes different amounts of pay. In my opinion, PT’s are no downfall in the payroll. Another bonus to being a PT is that in a way, you determine your pay by how you treat your patients. If your patients are treated well you will have repeat business, and with repeat business comes more work, and more pay to follow. Physical therapists have a salary range between $54,000 and $110,000 according to 2011 statistics. That's more than registered nurses and occupational therapists. PT’s average $78,270.00, as occupational therapy averages $74,000 and massage therapists a whopping $36,000. The highest paid in the physical therapist profession work is in the metropolitan areas of Texas, in El Paso and McAllen pay well. and Fairbanks, AK. Fairbanks in Arkansas and Sioux City in Iowa are great paying cities too.
