“Animals”= “Human”? “The difference between the brain of the human and the higher animal obviously lies in the degree, not the difference on the essence” (Charles Darwin). The purpose of the quote is to express the feeling that the animal and human is similar, they have the human-like qualities. In Life of Pi written by Yann Martel, Pi uses animal imagery to show that animals that can be mad, suffer, and sad which are all human qualities. In the Life of Pi, animals have the human-like emotions. They will be mad when others do something harmful to their friends. After the ship sank, there are some animals survived on “Pi’s Ark”: a zebra, a hyena, an ape and a tiger; however, the hyena is hurting the zebra. The ape: “But with her giant arms, …show more content…
The animal will be suffered like humans when Pi successfully caught the fish, he is going to kill it in order to eat; however, he cannot kill the fish by himself. Here is a quote why he cannot kill the fish. “I put the hatchet down. I would break its neck, sight unseen, I decided. I wrapped the fish tightly in the blanket with both hands. I started bending it. The more I pressed, the more the fish struggled. I imagined what it would feel like if I were wrapped in a blanket and someone were trying to break my neck. I was appalled. I gave up a number of times. Yet I knew it had to be done, and the longer I waited, the longer the fish’s suffering would go on!” (Martel P231). Pi was so kind and he is a Christian, so he is unwilling to kill the fish; furthermore, he has to kill the fish by breaking its neck, it’s impossible for him to done this. When the fish is suffering, they will be struggle. It’s similar to the human being. When human being are suffering like someone wrapped in a blanket and someone were trying to break his neck. Human will be struggled, they will try their best to revolt to alive. The fish had the same thought, they will try their best to flee away from the blanket to keep
Big Fish produced by Tim Burton consist of much spiritual significance. For example, one might think the fish was a symbol of Christianity, because of the Jesus fish that we often see on bumper stickers, but there is one true spiritual significance. The one true spiritual significance that sticks out the most is the Christ- like figure. Edward Bloom, the main character represents the Christ- like figure in this film. Like Jesus, Edward Bloom is a storyteller who tells the stories of his father.
The article “A Change of Heart About Animals” written by Jeremy Rifkin informs readers that animals feel emotions very much similar to humans and should be given more rights. I agree with Rifkin’s statement, but to a certain extent.
“Our life would be what we made of it, nothing more nothing less.” This quote was said by a character in The Pigman. The Pigman takes place in Staten Island, NY in the mid 1960s. John and Lorraine were two high school students make friends with Mr.Pignati a lonely old man who just lost his wife and was looking for people to talk with. The Puritans would destroy the novel The Pigman due to the law breaking characters, characters leading sinful lives, and poor family values.
A wise man once said, “The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love,” (Hubert H. Humphrey, Brainy Quotes). John and Lorraine, sophomores and the narrators of Paul Zindel’s The Pigman are great friends to the aging and lonely Angelo Pignati. What started off as a prank call, turned into a rewarding friendship and ended in the tragic death of Mr. Pignati. It can be proven that John and Lorraine are in no way responsible for this death. Their friendship, Mr. Pignati’s poor health and his emotional instability prove this is true.
“The blackness would stir and eventually go away, and God would remain, a shining point of light in my heart.” (Martel 232) Human communication is essential because without it, people will start to be deprived of their humanity. Humanity is the characteristics that belong to humans like love, compassion, sympathy, mercy, etc. Isolation from humans and not being able to have any human communication or contact, will lead to losing the sense of humanity in a person. "I didn’t have pity to spare for long for the zebra. When your own life is threatened, your sense of empathy is blunted by a terrible, selfish hunger for survival.” (Martel 133) Pi loses the compassion that he would have once had for the zebra. Without any human communication, there was no one to reassure him as a support system for Pi.
In human and animal nature, many similarities are portrayed in Life of Pi as well as a strong relation between the two. In contrast, humans and animals share the same sort of lifestyle, just living a different life according to Pi’s thoughts. In a tragic situation that one is in, such as Pi they must find a way to pass time and keep themselves busy by using their circumstances,
Yann Martel offers two accounts of Pi’s survival story so that Pi is able to personify animals and also give animalistic qualities to humans. This exchange is only seen after both accounts are read. The reader is able to determine which he or she accepts as reality, but since the facts of the story go unchanged and both tales are primarily the same, the sole purpose is to highlight the traits humans and animals posses. Yann Martel exemplifies human traits in animals and animal traits in people through his claim in passage A by telling the two stories of Pi’s survival.
In the story "Can Animals Feel and Think?" it said that people think animals are just "animals." When people
Whether is be the individualism of a zebra, the hope of an orangutan, the hatred of a hyena, or the determination of a tiger symbolism can be determined for any character. Pi’s journey obtains symbolism for each animal and a story of faith for himself through the sea and the rigors that he and the animals

This quote shows that Pi has feelings for the tiger even though it is a wild animal. The quote means that Pi is hurting badly on the inside. This quote reveals that Pi likes living things and has feelings for them. A. "This was the terrible cost of Richard Parker.
Pi quits his vegetarian diet and also chooses to live on a raft next to a bengal tiger on a lifeboat, which are both unusual and unconventional choices for him. He satisfies his hunger by quitting being a vegetarian and eating fish. Pi knows that “A lifetime of peaceful vegetarianism [stands] between [him] and the willful beheading of a fish” (Martel 98). In other words, his body needs the fish because the beheading “had to be done” (Martel 98) in order to survive.
Pi contacted with animals when he was very young. Therefore, when he was in trouble and afraid to solve the problem, his savagery will help him. “We fight to the very end. It’s not a question of courage. Its something constitutional, and inability to let go. It maybe nothing more than life-hungry stupidity. Richard Parker started growing that very instant as if he had been waiting for me to become a worthy opponent. My chest became tight with fear”( Martel p.187). Pi finally chose to face the tiger, and save himself. He did not choose to stay until the tiger eats him. Even if he knows that it’s difficult to survive, he did not give up. Pi stayed with animals when he was a child. His curiosity made him have a great interest in animals. He might learn something from the wild animals. Moreover, if animals did something very cruel and their behavior will probably leave a deep impression about those things in Pi’s mind. Therefore, Pi’s savagery leads him to have the determination to against the tiger, Richard
Carnegie went further and made a comparison between mankind and animals about how we as human beings cherish and appreciated and he quote “The desire for a feeling of importance is one of the chief distinguishing differences between mankind and the animals.” Page 38
One quote that supports the thought of people and animals being kindred is, “His need for rest was imperative and he thought, ‘I have played the fox, now I must play the cat of the fable’”
