Pablo Picasso and Francisco José de Goya were two artists that lived in completely different time periods and painted in very different styles. Goya painted frescos and court paintings while picasso dabbled in cubism and surrealism. However, like most artists, they both went through many changes and transitions throughout their lives as painters, and their desire to think outside the box and experiment with techniques that had never been used before reveal similarities in their work that may go unnoticed at first glance. When looking at the works of Goya and Picasso, one would be much more likely to point out differences than similarities. Goya did a lot of frescos and court paintings. These works differ greatly from most of Picasso’s paintings …show more content…
Not only were they both considered modern artists, their work also took a rather unexpected turn towards the end of their careers. Goya is considered the father of modern art. He took risks in his paintings and decided not to paint in the classical style of the old masters from earlier centuries, and Picasso also took many risks and painted in a very modern style. Picasso was even inspired by Goya’s work, and his painting, Massacre in Korea, was inspired by Goya’s The Third of May. Not only did they both experiment in their paintings, these artists also both went through a rough period in their lives that had a big effect in their style of painting. Picasso’s blue period reflected his sadness after his friend’s death, and all of his paintings during this time used blue and other muted colors. Goya’s black paintings, a series of fourteen pieces from his last years of life, also reflected a negative change in his life. These paintings were much darker and more depressing than his older paintings. The disturbing images in these paintings are thought to have been evoked from his fear of insanity and bleak outlook on
I say this because I said that Picasso’s had the woman making the girl big. In Velazquez’s the girl has the women also making her the center point. She couldn’t be though if the she didn’t have the women helping her and “making” her. I say this because she looks like she has a lot of things going on just sitting down and she couldn’t do everything by herself so to look good she needs the helpers or women. This is why I think that these two paintings look similar in this topic and also could look different.Contrasting:The second thing that I think is different about these two paintings is that the girl in Picasso’s painting is living in poverty and she looks pretty when she is cleaned up. In Velazquez’s the girl is living a lush life and has servants doing her work and she is just a young girl. The reason I say this is because since Velazquez was the king’s painter he only painted things that looked expensive for the king and his family to see. In Picasso’s case he was just a really good painter and he painted things that everybody who had practically nothing could
When you first look at the two painting they appear to be completely different, but on a second and closer look there are many striking similarities. First looking at it they don’t look anything alike they appear to be portraying the same event. Looking at the outline of Picasso’s paintings you see the resemblance of Velazquez painting. There are many similarities between both paintings. One similarity is that both painting have attendants dressing her. Another similarity is she is wearing a hoop skirt. The broach on her chest she is wearing seems to be the same in both paintings. In each painting it has at least one attendant kneeling down and holding both hands. The princesses arms are in the same position
Later he ended up revisiting Spain and he could see the division of the country. Spain was divided into two sides. One side is the New Spain, a country with thriving socialist movements. On the other side was Ancient Spain, a country suffocated by the heavy presence of the Catholic Church and poverty. Picasso called the Ancient Spain the Black Spain. These two sides wanted each other gone and were very conflicted. In the year 1935 Spain experienced an awful time and during this time Picasso started to change his art style. One of his most significant paintings where he started changing his style is the “Minotauromachy.” This piece is very sexual, but scriptural at the same time and almost disturbing in a way. Around this time many changes started happening in Picasso’s life, his wife was pregnant and he took a political side with the
Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt, has similarities and differences. They both have the same subject matter but different in media. Degas and Cassatt both used gesture lines sketch like drawing. Both of the painters used pastel on paper. In addition, they used chalks of medium in the painting.
“In Cubism paintings, objects are broken apart and reassembled in an abstracted form, highlighting their composite geometric shapes and depicting them from multiple, simultaneous viewpoints in order to create physics defying, collage- like effects” (Biography.com Editors). This innovative art form was very diverse from any other and he was able to create an unseen theme resulting in the new style, Cubism. As said in this article, “Pablo Picasso is most known for instruction of cubism, and modern approach to painting. Which set forth the movements to follow in the twentieth century” (Pablo Picasso and His Paintings). They were two different forms of cubism that were created, analytical and collage, by Picasso and Baroque. Each type focused on the composition of different ideas combined into one piece of artwork. Analytical, the first form of cubism, was the breaking down but put together form of Pablo’s new art style (Pablo Picasso). An example of this division of art would be “Break and Fruit Dish on a Table”, which shows the new perspective being shown with the fruit dish. The simplicity of the geometrical shapes coming together to form a complex image was repeatedly the case for analytical
Velazquez and Picasso made two similar painting’s, both named las meninas. Both of the painting’s represent a princess being helped by her maids or helpers. While Picasso’s was very abstract, Velazquez's was very realistic. While Picasso’s painting focused more on the princess, Velazquez’s painting focused more on the maids/helpers.
What made Picasso revolutionary was his ability in many art forms. He is also notable for being very flighty in his professional life, sticking with one philosophy for a few years, only to start do the complete opposite the next day. These changes often corresponded with his
As one of the the greatest painters of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso was one of the most influential artist. With the collaboration of Georges Braque, Picasso became the creator of cubism, which lead to many creations, one of these being Guernica. In these creations picasso wanted his viewers to feel the pain and suffrage of those in the bombing. He went on to develope painting that demonstrates conflicts in political realms after being describe as “the least political person ever known.”
Velazquez uses a realistic style to create a scene and tell a story, but Picasso uses geometric shapes to study the princess’s body and face. Another difference is the people. Velazquez includes many people in his painting, including himself, while Picasso only includes the princess and a maid. Because Velazquez adds so many people into his painting, many people argue what his main focus was. However, in Picasso’s painting it is clear that he valued the princess, which makes her the main focus in his painting. Another difference is the meaning of the paintings. Velazquez titled his painting Las Meninas, or ladies in waiting. This is odd because many of the people in his painting are focused on the princess, which may imply that she is the meaning of the painting. But because of the title, it is confusing to tell what Velazquez was trying to portray. However, Picasso takes up most of the space in his painting to draw the princess. Although a maid can be seen in the painting, it is clear that Picasso was trying to show the importance of the princess. Both artists painted these works to portray something. It may not be clear, but I think Velazquez was trying to show the importance of everyone in the castle. He
Pablo Picasso’s way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time compared to Vincent Van Gogh’s method. Drawing allowed van Gogh to capture light and images more quickly than with painting and
Picasso introduced modern style of art and also cubism. He has set a new way of painting which has influenced many artists in the 20th century as well as some artists today. Only with an age of fifteen he was glowing with the seniors in his school, and later he studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona, but he failed to graduate. In early 1900’s he has been traveling between France and Spain until his very close friend died. Pablo, still being hurt from the sadness and his poor living, he has become an artists of the Blue Period.
Every artist has his or her own style of painting. Each painting tells some sort of story or has some type of personal meaning to the artist. One of the most important figures in modern art is Pablo Picasso. Not only was Pablo Picasso a genius in the field of abstract art, but he also experimented with sculpting and ceramics. Pablo Picasso has taken the world to many places with his unique style of work which is why I believe he is considered to be a genius of the 20th century.
The first painting was created by Jacques-Louis David while he was imprisoned in Luxembourg Palace for supporting Maximilien Robespierre around the time of the French Revolution. The painting is based around an incident that took place around the early history of Rome, and in the painting a group of women are shown trying to separate Sabine and roman soldiers. The other painting, “Massacre at Chios,” depicts the massacring of Greek civilians at the hands of ottoman troops during the Greek war of independence in 1822. The third painting, “Guernica,” represents the chaos that resulted from the bombing of a town in Spain that shares the same name as the painting, at the hands of German Luftwaffe forces. In this painting Picasso uses abstraction to depict the massacre and perhaps to leave the deeper meaning up for the viewer to figure out on their own. As for all three paintings, they are all based around the theme of innocent people getting caught between the conflicts of groups of people, and of course the disaster that resulted. Another thing that makes them similar is that the paintings were also influenced by a conflict that was occurring at the time of their creation such as the French revolution for J.L. David’s painting, the massacre that occurred at Chios during the Greek war for independence in 1822 for Delacroix’s painting, and the bombing of the town of Guernica by Nazi air forces for Picasso’s painting. The way in which they are all different is in what the paintings were inspired by and the style that was used to portray a message or reference something that the painter had in mind. In J.L. David’s painting it was his imprisonment during the French revolution and the French’s desire to restore ancient roman values into civilian life that inspired David to paint “The Intervention of the Sabine Women.” As for Delacroix, his painting is different because he
Pablo Picasso - His Life and His Art Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, painter, sculptor, and printmaker, was born in Malaga Spain on October 25, 1881 and died on April 8, 1973.Today he is considered to be one of the most influential and successful artists in history. Picasso contributed many things to 19th century and modern day art and his name is familiar to all those involved in the many different fields of art. Throughout the seven decades that Picasso produced artwork he used many different types of media. In each piece of art he produced he searched for new possibilities, invented images in them, and reflected events that were occurring in his world through his artwork. Picasso had many artistic influences in his life, including Cézanne,
According to the Steins, Matisse and Picasso are two gifted men whose temperaments and strengths were more different. It was only natural that the two artists would see themselves as rivals.
