Genre: Picture Book Picture books are for all ages and all reading levels. It may take longer to read the pictures than the words because the illustrations are essential. Picture books may fit in any kind of genre. Beautiful picture books provide rich visual experiences for children of all ages and reading levels. Working together with text to create a cohesive whole, artists use artistic style, media and elements. Six artistic styles are realism, surrealism, expressionism, impressionism, Naive folk art and cartoon. Five artistic medium are painterly media, drawing, graphic media/print making, construction and photography. Five elements are line, color, shape texture and composition. Caldecott Medal began in 1938. It is Caldecott honor book. Caldecott winners are picture storybooks, and picture books are most the choices for parents and children before they go to bedtime. The characters are flat stereotypes and the setting is vague. It repeated phrases. The magical objects are numbers three and seven; chants and long sleeps; prince to the rescue; wishes do come true but only after a struggle. Tsunami! By Kimiko Kajikawa and illustrated by Ed Young. Tsunami the setting take place long ago in Japan. Tsunami! Ojiisan the main character have element of sense of humor in the story because before the tsunami was coming he had feeling that something is happening in the village. One day when his family was preparing to go to festival, he didn’t want to go. It repeat phrase which was “The sea was running way from the land! Because Ojiisan was anxious about the tsunami monster wave coming in the village. At the end of the story people never forgot what Ojiisan done for the people in the village.
