Obama, Hitler, and Queen Elizabeth all are leaders for different types of governments. Similar to The Lord of the Flies. In The Lord of the Flies, many characters represent many types of governments. The novel ,The Lord of the Flies, is a political allegory for three main reasons, Piggy represents a meritocracy, Jack represents a dictatorship, and Ralph represents a democracy.
Piggy represents a meritocracy-government where people are elected based on intellectual abilities-because he wants leadership to be based on ideas of the smart people. He is very smart but is treated unfairly throughout the novel. “No. A shell”(15). He also tells Ralph how to use the conch from when he saw it before. Piggy initially discovers the conch. The conch was at the bottom of the lagoon. Piggy suggests that Ralph uses it to call the boys. Throughout the novel piggy was very smart but was overlooked. Throughout the novel he represented a meritocracy.
Jack represents a dictatorship because he uses fear tactics to attract followers. He decides everything and disciplines those who break his rules. He uses fear tactics to keep his leadership position.
“Quiet!” shouted Jack. “You, listen. The beast is sitting up there, wherever it is_”
“Perhaps it’s waiting--”
“Hunting--”
…”Yes. The beast is a hunter(126).”

Jack bent down to them as though he loved.
“Ralph--we need meat even if we are hunting the other thing.”
“If you mean going the right way, we’ll hunt(111).” Jack taunts Ralph into helping him hunt. By doing that Jack gets Ralph to help him. Jack frequently manipulated the boys into doing things for his own personal benefit. Jack has total control and implements his beliefs in the other boys. Even if a boy in his tribe didn’t agree with him, his tactics kept them from speaking up. Peer pressure influenced his tribe tremendously. Jack represented a dictator throughout the novel.
Ralph represents a democracy because he wants fairness and order. He also wants everybody to be equal. “Doubtfully, Ralph laid the small end of the shell against his mouth and blew(16).” Ralph uses the conch to let everyone get a fair chance to speak. This creates an orderly healthy society where everyone has an voiced opinion.
