However, it is easy to miss some of the more ancient buildings, such as Santa Maria Presbiteri, a deconsecrated church dating back from 1123, which has now been converted into a pizzeria, as has “Apicio” a highly vaulted 12th century building, which according to the owner, Simone Corrieri, was Pistoia’s first bank, and one of the first in Europe. Simone has a personal collection of treasures next door, including a 7ft statue of a Faun from the Boboli gardens and a Roman ossuary, which, if asked very nicely, he allows patrons to visit after hours. Entering the old hospital, which is decorated with an impressive 16th century terracotta frieze by Giovanni della Robbia, you can take a one-hour tour of Pistoia’s Sotterranea (Underground). This
Elena Macias is a third-year journalism and media studies major with a minor in history at San Diego State University. Macias is from Colton, Calif. and was raised by two parents who loved taking her to rock 'n' roll concerts. From the first amplified strum of an electric guitar, she was hooked on the heavy sound and wanted more. Her music taste was developed with the help of her grandfather's radio and dad's CD collection.
Melinda Sordino completely loathes the cliques at Merryweather High school, there are so many it is overwhelming. There's a group for every type of person , in theory it should work, but it does not, simply because people are seclude to one certain group and have to keep up to a certain standard. I think another reason why Melinda hates the cliques is, because she is all alone and does not fit anywhere, so seeing the cliques is just another painful reminder. Also Melinda losses the only friend she had to the Martha's , which is serious blow to her self esteem. This quote best describes how Melinda feels” We fall into clans: Jocks, Country Clubbers, Idiot Savants, Cheerleaders, Human Waste, Eurotrash, Future Fascists of America, Big Hair Chix,
Then we view the sculptures of the Boar and Hunting Dogs which were originally in the garden of a home in a city in the Bay of Naples. We also view the large fresco of the Garden Scene (see Fig. 2), which feels like a time warp back in time to Pompeii. The Garden Scene displays the beauty of nature with the various plants and birds present, and the two heads hanging on posts seem to be looking out to the viewer and protecting the garden. After the garden pieces we then are welcomed to the indoors of the Bay of Naples’ homes.
The Villa dei Papiri (Villa of the Papyri) was discovered for the first time in the 18th century, it was excavated then but not in the normal way. Because of its relative inaccessibility the only way to
The structure, approved and paid for by the city council, was a feat of amazing architecture on the part of Fillippo Brunelleschi. This was the largest dome created in that time and it was Brunelleschi’s ingenious design that won the commission against Ghiberti and other artists. The Church’s possession of grand cathedrals like this one served to demonstrate to the people the greatness of the faith and the power of God. There was a religious aspect to the construction of the immense cathedrals and basilicas; the people were paying homage to their god and constructing churches they felt were worthy for him. However, it was also somewhat political, as the grandeur of the churches was displayed to all the people in the city. No one could question the Catholic church’s might and colossal influence after viewing a cathedral such as the
“Crocicchio” by Ardengo Soffici is a poem written in the era of the historic avant-garde in which Italy was facing a technological revolution; railways, cars and trams were all being transformed and as such the country saw a rise in the Italian Futurist movement. This movement praised all things modern by exploring new forms and technologies, treating them as a spectacle to be revered. The influence of these futuristic ideologies is clear in Crocicchio as Soffici paints a series of pictures of city life characterised by the chaos and activity which he experiences in his passing.
Melinda Sordino is influenced by peer pressure because her friends went to a party where she ended up drinking and getting involved with a boy (Addy) who took advantage of her. I do not think I was ever involved with anything like this because my grandmother is a strict woman, so I was never aloud out of the house unless it was with family. I thought it was very dumb of Melinda to do that because going to a party and drinking at that age is wrong, these kids need to find some type of discipline. Melinda had a better way of handling the situation by telling an adult that she trusted,I feel like if she never went to that party none of this would have happened. Her family and friends around can be a better influence to her, talk to her, be there
Livia’s devotion to being involved with the state did not stop with her husband’s policies. Two generations later, with Tiberius Claudius Nero Germanicus, her influence is seen again. Claudius lived with Livia for a long time, during which he developed an immense amount of respect for her. Although he could be considered the black sheep of the family, when Claudius became emperor, he was successful in making Britain a province and extending the Roman rule to Northern Africa. The people wanted to celebrate Claudius, but he refused almost all praise. In fact, he directed all praise towards Livia instead. “His grandmother Livia he not only honoured with equestrian contests but also deified; and he set up a statue to her in the temple of Augustus, charging the Vestal Virgins with the duty of offering the proper sacrifices, and he ordered that women should use her name in taking oaths” (Dio Cassius Roman History Book 60). Claudius had so much admiration for her that he wanted her name to be spoken even when citizens were taking oaths. Livia was an example for women to follow in that if they are ineligible or unable to shape western civilization themselves, they can shape it with their connections to powerful men. Livia
He built his home on the top of a hill, and called it Piria's Castle. The castle embodies Piria's mystical beliefs. Statues of Greek gods, each representing a planet and a metal used in alchemy, line the pathway. Esoteric symbols are embodied within the bricks. Templar flags wave from the towers. Rumor has it that the castle's upper floors were used for meditation and astral
Or should I say, Pedrito’s great-grandfather had built it over a hundred years back, and then each first son had lived in it and passed it on. But you have to understand, Patria Mercedes was in those timbers, in the nimble workings of the transoms, she was in those wide boards on the floor and in that creaky door opening on its old hinges,” (Alvarez 148).
In World War II, up to six million Jews, Slavs, Serbians, along with many other people were murdered for their political beliefs, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation by the Nazis. The Nazi Party came from the German nationalist and racist, The National Socialist German Workers' Party was active from 1920 to 1945. Sofka was the daughter of Prince Peter Alexandrovitch Dolgorouky of St. Petersburg, Russia. She had connections to the French Resistance, who were the people in charge of making the documents. Sofka wrote the names of many Jews also had fake passports to South American countries in hopes that diplomats would help them avoid internment camps.

Sophya has below average to average fine motor skills depending on the activity she is doing. For example when coming to writing her name she has trouble. To help her learn I would suggest to have her take her name tag off so she can see it, then while holding the pencil have her put her hand on top of yours, and ask what each letter is, then write it. Another way you could have her practice writing her name is by drawling dashes of lines of the letters in her name and have her trace it. She is right handed, and hand grip has an alternate grip. While coloring she will stay in the lines. She is able to cut, with some help. I would hold the paper where she is able cut the paper and will be able to cut it. When it comes to being average in her
First, we visit St. Peter’s Basilica and Adjoining Piazza in Rome. The beautiful structure still used today, initially was brought to fruition by Donato Bramante as a temple shaped like a Greek cross. Quickly Pope Paul V rejected the design, deeming the Greek cross to be pagan-like. He commissioned Carlo Maderno to make some changes to the floor plan, adjusting the look into a Latin cross. The florid baroque styles are seen entering the Apse and Alter, which “symbolized the power and richness of the church” (392). The sculptures throughout, specifically in the Apse, are dramatic and real, shunning classical styles.
