The name “Pi” in the novel “Life of Pi” was very significant in the story because it develops the character of Pi himself throughout the story to show his complexity. Pi is not only a name, but it is also used frequently in math as the number 3.14, which never changes. However, this number is only rounded to this value, there are actually too many decimals that make it hard for people to understand, so rounding it to a simple 3.14 makes it easier. The characteristics of this Pi relates to the character in a way. For example, the infinite amounts of decimals in 3.14 represents the different kinds of reality Pi has considered about the world. There are infinite point of views one can view the world as there are infinite decimals to numbers. This name develops Pi into more than a protagonist, but a constituting figure with multiple
The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: “I was named after a swimming pool” (8) The word “Piscine” in French translate to ‘swimming pool’ in English. The significance of his name is because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life.

Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, is a novel about a young boy, Pi, trapped with a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker who survive together in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. The central theme of the novel is Pi’s faith in God, which proves to be a
The name ‘Pi’ Pi Patel’s full name is Piscine Molitor Patel, we are told that Piscine’s name is derived from the French word for “swimming pool” the inspiration for the name in the form of a family friend who had fallen in love with a pool in France and told his friend–Pi’s father–it should be the name of his newborn son. This family friend, Mr. Adirubasamy, is the one who teaches Pi to swim which ties in with the theme of survival as Pi is the only one in his family who survives thanks to his swimming abilities which Mr. Adirubasamy bestowed to him. There is also some irony in the name Piscine, in that as a child he is tauntingly called Pissing and when is stranded it occurs to him he may need to drink his own urine or ‘piss’.
In this journal, I will be questioning whether Pi will survive in the ocean. First, Pi has animals to keep him company aboard the raft. Even though the animals like to fight with each other it still makes Pi feel less lonely, and therefore more willing to try and survive.
Piscine Molitor Patel says it himself that his survival is “hard to believe” and can hardly comprehend it looking back. Yet, the readers are promised with a happy ending, and a happy ending with Pi’s survival is what we get. However, it raises the incredible question of just how Pi managed to survive the hardships, loss, pain and suffering, all in the Pacific Ocean’s harsh, unforgiving environment. The first explanation involves Pi’s inborn desire to survive at all cost and to resist giving up. Also, Pi’s versatility to change from a life-long vegetarian to a meat eater and his creativeness in making the best out of a horrible situation are some of the key factors that contribute to his survival. Furthermore, the role of Richard Parker in
As the title of the novel has already suggested, the name of the protagonist is Pi, legally known as Piscine Moliter Patel. Piscine's first name is later on shortened to "Pi", for it is a much simpler name. If the name is analyzed with further thought, a significant meaning can be uncovered. Pi's name not only represents his identity, but is in a way, connected to the theme the nature of religious beliefs. In the science field, "Pi" is symbolized as the mathematical term for " ". This term is commonly recognized as the number 3.14. In particular aspects of Hinduism, the number 3 signifies the ability an individual possess to build curiosity upon faith and connect with its spirituality. Piscine Molitor Patel, known better as Pi, was given this name by Mamaji, a name meaning ‘Respected Uncle.' Mamaji wasn’t Pi’s uncle. He was a family friend. He was a former swim champion and swam in many pools all around the world. The best pool that he ever swam in was the Piscine Molitor pool in Paris. He explained this pool as “clear, pristine,
Pro and Con Essay Piscine Molitor Patel, after floating on the ocean for 227 days, was discovered exhausted and pale. There is no abnormalities in vital signs discovered, which indicates that with proper cares and rest, his body will function well. In spite of his physical health, his mental health should be particularly examined in detail. Without precedent case, more details and aspects should be included to consider, when evaluating if Pi is suitable to integrate to society again. Furthermore, since the incredible survival is told by Pi in first person point of view, we have reason to take a skeptical attitude on the truth of the story. It is best to present both pros and cons before jumping into the judgment.
The family business of the Pondicherry Zoo in India This is introduced in the beginning of the book. Pi’s father allowed Pi to be a very big part of the zoo. This caused Pi to have great knowledge about the animals inside of the zoo. Growing up in the zoo also persuaded Pi to study zoology. Pi growing up around the business taught him to love animals, and as a boy growing up he was able to appreciate and love animals. This zoo also made Pi think wild animals were not dangerous. “I quite deliberately dressed wild animals in tame costumes of my imagination. But I never deluded myself as to the real nature of my playmates.” (Martel 37). The zoo showed the animals in a tame state, not as they would actually be in real life.
Life of Pi The movie The Life of Pi is an interesting movie, and a movie I think is very good for people who are curious about life in general. Pi, the main character ends up alone in the middle of the ocean on a very small boat after the ship his family was on sunk during the middle of a severe storm. Pi ended up on the boat with a tiger, zebra, orangutan, and a hyena. Throughout the movie Pi discovers himself, as he sails across the sea and eventually ends up on an island where a few people find him.
Piscine Molitor Patel, or Pi, was named after the cleanest, most pure swimming pool in all of France. This brings in the cinematic effect of the water and what it resembles throughout the movie. When good things happen, the water will be clear and pure. When bad things happen (or will happen), the water is cloudy or reflective. At the young age of 11, kids from Pi’s school start making fun of him, calling him “Pissing”, soiling the pure and innocent meaning behind his name and what it stands for. “With one word my name went from an elegant French swimming pool to a stinking Indian latrine, I was pissing everywhere.”
It is known that one of the most difficult things to do, is survive on sea in terms of a survival situation. (Grade Saver). Surviving on sea is one difficult thing to do on your own although imagine doing it with a Bengal tiger? Not imaginable, but it did happen with Piscine Molitor Patel of Pondicherry India. Pi survives on sea for seven months (227) days from India to the coast of Mexico mentally and physically because he had hope, Richard Parker, and religion. Without these three things- he may not have survived because he speaks about the importance of these things to him and the role that they play in his life and the influence they have on him on this treacherous, lengthy journey.
