1. Even though this video was brief, I thought that the video was informative on explaining whether or not there is such thing as a Placebo effect and how it works. This video talks briefly on the studies that were conducted and the opinions regarding the placebo effect. Overall, I really enjoyed this video and my personal opinion would be that I think that there might be such thing as a placebo effect and how it may or may not work depending on the individual taking this placebo and also how serious their case is. Also, more information needs to come into play on whether or not this placebo effect will work or not. I must say, I did watch this video more than once to make sure that I didn’t miss any important video. It was an interesting video …show more content…
According to Psychologist Irving Kirsch, Kirsch strongly believes on his opinions and also his studies conducted on the Placebo effect. Kirsch believes that Placebo effects do work. Within this video, Psychologist Irving Kirsch talks about how this placebo pill can work for individuals who suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, individuals who suffers from knee pain or even individuals who suffers from mild depression. Kirsch listed many cases that the Placebo effect will work and talks about his studies regarding it (Irving Kirsch, Video).
Last but not least, Kirsch believes that the placebo pill is just as effective when compared to Anti-depressants. Kirsch stated in the video that Anti-depressants do work, however; Kirsch states that it is not the chemical in the drug that works it is because of the placebo effect and how this placebo effect has a way of healing and patients believe that this placebo pill works, therefor the patient gets better. (Irving Kirsch,

In regards to the Placebo Effect, It can have many opinions. In the video, it is clear that Doctor Walter Brown and also Irving Kirsch both believe that the placebo effect is effective. However; The FDA, the drug companies, and even Doctor Michael believes that the placebo effect is not effective. Within this video, Doctor Walter Brown talks about how Anti-depressants work best for the individuals that suffers from severe depression. Whereas; anti-depressants work the least in those who have mild depression. And how, Doctor Walter Brown believes in the studies conducted by Irving Kirsch. Last but not least, In the Video, it states that in the UK, they have talk therapists and also physical exercises in order to treat mild depression and how they have seen great results within these programs and how only those who suffer from severe depression will receive anti-depressants.
4. In regards to the FDA, they have their own opinions on whether the placebo effect works and how they believe that anti-depressants works better. They believe that the placebo effect doesn’t work nor is it effective. Only drugs such as; Anti-Depressants are effective. This video talks about how the drug have to be proven to work better than the placebo pill of at least 2 clinical trials, even if the drug failed many other clinical trials.
While with a friend, I mentioned my experiences with depression and anxiety medication and her response was that it was most definitely a placebo and that I should try and be more optimistic, words have often heard. This not only invalidated my lived experiences, indirectly, she was calling me a liar. This seems to be the most common opinion people hold about mental struggles, and Jenny addresses this in her book.
The author continues to demonstrate how the placebo effect works by comparing it to the famous biological study by Ivan Pavlov. In Pavlov’s experiment, dogs are conditioned to respond to a specific stimulus and eventually begin to respond to the same stimulus in the same way all the time. Bjerklie explains that, “as far as the placebo effect is concerned, we may as well be those impressionable canines.” What Bjerklie means is that the human mind has the ability to be conditioned to expect certain outcomes. The placebo effect builds on the human minds ability to be conditioned and an individual’s faith in the healthcare providers it choses to visit. Overtime the human mind has come to believe that if given a medication that is suppose to have a positive effect on a specific pathology, it will in fact have an positive effect.
Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is a harsh criticism of Southern prejudice. However, Mockingbird focuses not on this prejudice, but on how to fight it. Throughout the novel, Atticus Finch tries to prevent his children from succumbing to the bigotry that plagues Maycomb County. Atticus's lessons teach us that by standing in other people's shoes and exposing ourselves to other people's views we can fight our own prejudice.
The intention is to show schizophrenics that their hallucinations are not real. As yet, however, there is no evidence that this will provide a successful treatment.
I am also an artist. I started painting when I was five years old. Not only do I enjoy painting, but also sculpting and drawing. The placebo effect has been affecting people for hundreds of years. In the 1940s sugar pills were sold in doctors’ catalogs specifically for the purpose of prescribing them to psychiatric patients. Today, over 60% of doctors admit to prescribing placebos to their patients, although there is an unwritten rule among doctors in the United States that placebos should no longer be given to patients. Some even do it on a regular basis because they believe the effect a fake drug has on the brain is more effective for its price than the real medication or treatment. In the documentary, Placebo: Cracking the Code, viewers see a few different perspective of the placebo effect. They hear from doctors, patients, and researchers to more fully understand the ins and outs of the placebo effect. These different viewpoints serve as an effective way to bring light the producers’ purpose: to show just helpful and sometimes harmful placebo drugs can be.
In total, the results of 1460 patients receiving antidepressant medication and 858 receiving a placebo sugar pill were analyzed. This analysis combined the results from these 19 different studies and generated an effect size (which is calculated as the mean of the experimental group minus the mean of the control group, divided by the pooled standard deviation SD). Once Kirsch and Sapirstein subtracted mean placebo response rates from mean drug response rates, they found a mean medication effect of 0.39 SDs (1). For each type of medication, the effect size for the active drug response to drug response is between 1.43 and 1.69, and the placebo response is between 74% and 76% of the active drug response. This means that 75% of the effect attributed to the perceived use of anti-depressants was due to the placebo. The perception of clinical benefit from antidepressants was largely attributed to the perceptions of the mind, and not to the actual chemical make-up of the pills patients were taking. The placebo effect shows us that the mind heavily influences our perceptions of wellness and health.
Although this is a fake way to treat depression, it does actually help the disorder depending on the person. Still, this effect is a huge hole in the credibility of antidepressants. On the bright side, there are some people who have had good cases involving only antidepressants. In other words, “Make no mistake: For many people, antidepressants do work. In fact, they can be life-saving.” (Web MD) Mainly stating that for some users antidepressants are all they need. Still it all comes down to the user or person, and what works the best on them personally. With it’s many flaws the other argument does make it’s vital points on the subject.
c) Classical conditioning could help patients reduce pain and anxiety through the use of placebos. For example the use of pills and injections that have no active ingredients or treatments that have no direct physical effect on the problem. The bigger and more impressive the placebos are, the stronger their psychological effects are.
Freedom of religion and freedom of expression are fundamental concepts that defined the inception of the United States. This is in stark contrast to how many citizens view religious freedom today, as the United States has moved towards a secularized nation. Too often, citizens champion for a separation of church and state, which does not appear in the Constitution, in order to validate the exclusion of God’s Word. These proponents for secularization have chosen to misinterpret the words of then President Jefferson rather than reflect on the historical precedence of Christian morals established by the Founding Fathers, who were God fearing people. “The constitutional Framers saw clearly that relgion would be a great aid in maintaining civil
This is an accurate representation of medication for depression. It does not make you want to live, it does not fix your thinking, it just makes you functional. It allows you to do things you wouldn’t usually be able to, and maybe after a while you will be able to function on your own.
Stanovich explains “helping people is an applied part of an incredibly large number of fields, including social work, education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, police science, human resources, and speech therapy.” (p. 6) By using the placebo effect, people can be “tricked” into believing their sickness or symptoms have been treated, which in my opinion, is a positive way that psychology has the potential to help others. For example, if someone is depressed and is given a certain type of pill they were told actually works to help with depression, but is really nothing, then it will actually do more for their illness because they believe it can help them. This example shows that psychology can be a science because it is the study of the mind and how people can believe that something works for them, even though it may be nothing at all. It also shows that the mind is a powerful thing, and can be shown through the study of
Like antidepressant medications, therapy can have its downsides as well and not work for every case of depression. My dad, who struggles with severe depression, has tried using counselling and other forms of therapy to conquer his depression, yet none
As the literature remains inconclusive as to the relation between current major treatment modalities and depressive disorder, and given the extremities of the potential dangers of antidepressant medications, it is apparent that there is a need to develop new interventions, which show greater efficacy, safety, and acceptability.
Is depression a subject that people typically tend to brush aside? Rather than facing away from a serious issue that people suffer from in their daily lives, we should discuss the methods to help people with their struggle from depression. A common method to treat depression is the use of antidepressants. But are they effective? Do they cause more harm and danger than aid? Are there other methods that can provide greater improvement rather than a pill? Instead of using antidepressants there are other alternatives such as placebos and types of therapy that can be just as, or more effective than the use of prescription antidepressants.
