Activity 3 – Plan before Publishing.
1. It is important to have background knowledge about the message, the audience and any constraints before publishing a document In preparing a document, information about the message, audience and any constraints must be known before publishing can take place. Information on the importance and the need of the message, the content of the message, the format, and the image you want the message to project must all be known. The New Yorker is a magazine that is published weekly and reports on multiple topics such as: business, politics, international affairs, and technology. After researching the reader demographics of this magazine I’ve come to discover who actually reads The New Yorker. The statistics I found on the reader demographic consisted of age, sex, social economic background, education and political views. When this magazine was first created in 1925, the publishers had a target group of readers that they were attempting to reach out to, still today the same group of readers are targeted.
Develop the message – messages are tailored and developed to specific audiences. When preparing messages it is important to think about who the message is for, what you want the message to receive and what you want the recipient to do as a result of the message.
In Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts”, the author speaks to a broad range of individuals. Lamott’s intended audience is struggling writers because she tries to explain the pressure everyone feels when they are tasked with a writing assignment. In Baker’s passage, the author is speaking to all teachers when it comes to science or writing. He is trying to have other teachers comprehend the importance or writing in science and also gives steps to help make better writers in the process. His audience is leaning more towards science teachers but all teachers that require writing in their environment can learn something from Baker. Meanwhile, Johnson targeted audience is department chairs for psychology and students looking to improve their writing within this discipline. She is trying to explain to psychology majors and professors the importance of finding a writing technique that statistically works for that degree. Lastly, Makenzie’s audience is intended for teachers to understand why writing is important in biology.

Before sitting down to write something, I always like to take a second to think about my audience. Who will be reading my content and why will they be reading it? Keep this in mind helps me tailor my message. For example, a landing page will have a different audience than a press release.
1. When communicating, messages must be appropriate to the needs of the audience, the subject and the

For this research, the unit of observation are magazines as obviously will be making my observations in magazines. What are the reasons for choosing this medium? Convenience, easy to secure, and also it is quite easy to analyse compared to other mediums. However, there is one important criterion for magazines, such as they have to be in English language as it will be important in identifying gender stereotyping in the writing. Though, there are criteria that are not important to me such as the genre (men’s and women’s magazine) and also, the magazines will not be filtered in terms of their release date
In the journal article, the authors tell the reader what they were interested in, the questions they were trying to answer, and provide information on the participants. The authors were interested in learning if men find all women associated with the color red
When I was a little girl my friends and I always talked about what we were going to be when we grew up. Some said a teacher; others said a nurse, secretary, and even a mom. I knew what I was going to be, but what we don't think about is how we get to be these things. We float through elementary school, having small children fun. Next we go to middle school trying to find our ways in the world, some of us worries about grades, and some don't. Not many thinking ahead of high school, let alone college. In high school we soon realize that grades are very important and better grades give you a better chance at better colleges. So those of us who want to go to college start cramping down on our studies so we can get those desirable grades. I may have not been the perfect student throughout high school. My Study habits could have been better, but one thing I do know is that I want to do more with my life than just a high school diploma.
Audience analysis is basically described as the process that guides the preparation and examination of any well-structured speech. This process requires the speaker to analyze the audience before, during, and after the delivery of the speech. However, audience analysis is hugely conducted before the presentation of the speech than during the act of speaking. One of the first and critical steps of the process of audience analysis is the examination of the demographic factors. This is followed by the evaluation of the socio-economic, psychographic, and environmental characteristics of the audience (Atkins-Sayre, n.d.).
The questions writers should ask before they collect the information are what do you want the receiver to do or believe? What does the audience already know? How will it receive this message? What techniques should I use to present this message effectively? How to elicit some feedback?
