Scientific Advancement and Intelligence with New Thoughts People have different thoughts towards the genre of science fiction. These authoritative figures create ideas, which can be used in analyzing science fiction works. The Psychology of Science Fiction, David Hartwell, and Isaac Asimov are science fiction analyzers and well-known people in the science fiction genre. The Psychology if Science Fiction gives the authoritative idea of new trains of thought. New trains of thought are used for a new idea for a person individually or for a group culturally. David Hartwell gives the idea of intellect over irrationality and emotion. This idea is used when a character uses their intellect rather than their emotions and irrational thoughts. Lastly, …show more content…
In Pierre Boulle’s Planet of the Apes, there are new trains of thoughts for the main character Ulysse Merou and for the ape. In the beginning, Professor Antelle, Ulysse, and Arthur Levain discover “a woman’s foot” (Boulle 27). This shows David Hartwell’s new trains of thought for the three individuals and culturally because they are the only ones who know about a new race. Later the group names the woman “Nova”. A new train of thought is when the gorillas perform a drive and capturing of the human race and on Antelle, Arthur, and Ulysse. This is a new train a thought where the gorillas are superior to the human race. This is a new thought for Ulysse and Antelle, but not Arthur since he has died. For Ulysse, he does not know what to expect. For Professor Antelle, Boulle does not give her location till …show more content…
Ender is one of the best commanders the International Fleet has ever wanted. He is put through the physical task that no battle student has ever done before. At Battle School, Ender is the commander of the dragon army, and is pressured everyday to compete in a battle against another army. Ender wins seven out of the seven battles he played in a week (Card 186). This shows Ender’s intellect over his irrationality and emotion. It also shows a new train of thought, because no other army is put through these stressful battle situations. When Ender takes part in the commander school training, there is a part where Ender unleashes against Petra (Card 284). Ender let his emotions get to him as they normally do. Ender sometimes lets his emotions too much, rather than think, he does irrational stuff. Ender is a good for David Hartwell’s idea, but yet he contradicts it. Ender finds himself in a hard situation. He decides to go and restart the bugger colony. This scientific advancement that Ender wants to bring to the buggers is pessimistic for the International Fleet, and they cannot do anything to stop
Ender is using his old experiences to teach his army, which shows him intelligent. When he was practicing alone or sometimes with Petra, he learned many moves and tricks, and now when he is a commander he can use those experiences to teach his army how to play better. Ender is being smart. He is been learning from other people and when he has his army he can use those tricks, so they can be better soldiers. He is making his army strong enough, and that shows that Ender is being smart. However, Ender never knows why he has been isolated and manipulated by Graff. For example, Ender thought that if you are a leader/commander you should isolate or manipulate only one person in your army, just because they are smart. One day Ender was talking to Bean and said, “Graff had isolated me to make me struggle, to make me prove, not that I was competent, but that I am for better than everyone else. That’s what I am doing to you, Bean. I am hurting you to make you a batter soldier in every way.” (167). Ender thought that what all commanders do. They always push one soldier, so they can make him/her a good commander in future. As he is doing to Bean. Ender never knows why Graff had isolated and manipulated him. These are some reasons that makes Ender a blended character in the novel Ender’s
Ender made a choice to go to battle school because Graff talked him into going like on page 22 when Graff tells Ender “that no one wants a third”, and he was smart enough to win the war against the Buggers on page 296 when Mazer said to Ender “Ender you never played me. You never played a game since I became your enemy.”. He wanted to win the whole war not just one fight because on page 19 Ender said “knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones, too. So they’d leave me alone.” Because of the decisions Ender makes he becomes a hero and a soldier. This has to do with us because we will probably have other wars and there will be soldiers who train and fight for us much like Ender trained and fought for the world. Ender at the beginning of the book is weak and not a leader. By the middle of the book Ender was strong and almost the leader of an army. By the end of the book Ender is a hero and the leader of a
After Ender’s important battle, they tell him that all of it was real and that he had actually defeated the buggers. Ender thinks to himself, “Real. Not a game. Ender’s mind was too tired to cope with it all. They weren’t just points of light in the air, they were real ships that he had fought with and real ships he had destroyed. And a real world that he had blasted into oblivion. He walked through the crowd, dodging their congratulations, ignoring their hands, their words, their rejoicing” (Card 297). When Ender realizes that they have been lying to him and using him as a weapon, he becomes angry. Ender yells at Graff and Mazer, “‘ I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer! You didn’t want me, you bastards, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!’” (Card 297). If Ender would have known that he would have killed people and creatures, he would not have gone to battle school in the first place. Death is very hard on Ender and he does not know how he can live with such a burden. Ender’s change in character is due to him being a victim of
Ender has a lot to think about towards the end of the book. He had became a captain earlier then a lot of the other captains. Ender was a smart kid and his brother Peter was jealous of him because he got accepted to battle school. Ender also had a sister that was sweet and he loved her. Ender is kinda like both Peter and Valentine they kinda are the same in a way. Ender He killed a lot of people but he isn’t anything like peter. He also have a good heart but he’s also isn’t like valentine. He’s kinda mixed with both of them because he is violent but has a great heart.
Ender’s experience as commander in Battle School teaches him that being strict will help his army win games. When first being assigned commander, Ender knows that he needs to treat the Launchies just like how he was treated. This means that he needs to incorporate discipline on his new Launchies. While they are dressing, Ender orders them to run to the practice room, and when some of them don’t dress quickly enough, he yells, “Dress faster next time… next week the rule is two minutes” (158). Right from the start, Ender takes a gamble and utilizes strong disciplinary tactics on his rookies. Ender knows that his true potential was only reached after being pushed to his limits. Therefore, he attempts to exploit this same objective with the Launchies. The tactics can only be considered effective if demonstrated in the game scores, however. Ender and his Dragon Army experience many victories following their many grueling practice sessions. Following the games, “Dragon Army had fought seven battles in seven days. The score stood 7 wins and 0 losses” (186). Ender finds out that his rigorous training sessions produced a perfect army who wins every game. Ender pushes his Launchies to their absolute limit and later is able to face an expert army. Through his skillful leadership, Ender teaches his rookies how to meet the challenges of the
Planet of the Apes takes the world as we know it and turns it upside down and in so doing questions almost every belief and value system of mankind. Written and produced at a time when America and much of the world was in the midst of a cultural change and people were questioning and protesting everything the screenwriters take make this film a satirical and thought provoking commentary on the big questions of the era. The Vietnam War, the struggle for equal treatment of African Americans and a general mindset of questioning religion and traditional values were the things that made up the American culture of the nineteen sixties. The film grapples with and makes ant attempt to address most of the issues of the period in which it was written. Three thousand years into the future man has devolved into a non-speaking primitive being while apes have evolved into intellectual beings capable of rational thought and speech. Taylor, the captain of the spaceship and tragic hero, speaks his last words before hibernating his way into the distant future, he states that he is leaving the twentieth century and asks a question, “Tell me, though, does man, that marvel of the universe, that glorious paradox who sent me to the stars, still make war against his brother ... keep his neighbor's children starving?” Taylor, a cynic and skeptic, sees man as violent and destructive. When he arrives in the future to a world where apes are supreme the antagonist of the film, Dr.
Ender has struggled to find his identity several times throughout the story. For example, “I can’t beat them, “ Ender said softly. “I’ll be out there like Mazer Rackham one day, and everybody will be depending on me, and I won’t be able to do it” (p. 241). Ender shows how he starts to doubt both his skills and capabilities as a leader. He feels unfit for the job despite his results in battle school and in Eros with Mazer
Ender departs for Battle School, in part, to make his family’s life easier, but he has no clue yet that his road ahead is filled with loneness and separation. When Ender is at the shuttle, Colonel Graff purposely tells all the Launchies that Ender is the genius of the group and that no one can surpass him, making everyone on the launch dislike him. “This wasn’t the way the show was supposed to go. Graff was supposed to pick on him, not set him up as the best. They were supposed to be against each other at first, so they could become friends later” (32). This also shows that Colonel Graff is forcing him to only depend on himself. What Ender also doesn’t know is that his enforced segregation is becoming a tool in the hands of the officers. They obviously determine that the loss of companionship will leave him stronger. However, too much isolation will lead to the experiment’s
In the beginning of the book Ender gets his monitor removed and gets into a fight. The way he handled the fight is what caused colonel Graff to offer Ender to join battle school. In the start of battle school, Ender got picked on a lot, until he killed Bonzo, he was promoted to commander, commanding his own army, he defeated a lot of other armies in the school. In the commanding part of the book, he was getting stressed and losing sleep, he went back to Earth because he didn’t want to be in battle school anymore, then his sister convinced him to go to Eros to train for the bugger war, when he was playing simulations of a bugger invasion, he finally defeated the buggers and Graff told him that the games were actually real, not simulators. After he beat the buggers, another war started on Earth, his sister met with him where he was and told him that he should be governor at another planet and went around to find a new planet for a new era for the buggers.
Ender is now in command school. Still in the guidance of Colonel Graff. As we go on through the book and chapter fourteen we find out that many of the groups need teachers and/or commanders. We ultimately find a character that comes back to be the teacher of Ender, Mazer Rackham. Ender starts his final exam. As he went through it, suddenly all the military adults came and congratulated him and he had beat them. He thought it was it was all a game. It turns out it was all real. "This was the Third Invasion. There were no games, the battles were real." (296)
He specifically states before commencing his attack on the Bugger’s home planet, “Forget it Mazer, I don’t care if I pass your test, I don’t care if I follow your rules. If you can cheat, so can I. I won’t let you beat me unfairly- I’ll beat you unfairly first”. (Card 293) Ender was motivated to beat the Command School, not the Buggers. In the past, the school had done countless abhorrent actions, feeding the fire of reprisal deep within Ender.
In the book Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, it starts with ender in school and being made fun of. After he beats up a bully, he goes home to deal with his brother Peter who also bullies him because Ender is a better specimen than Peter was. But what no one expected was that a representative from the military came to invite Ender to Battle School up in space. Ender accepted and went to live up in Battle School for years to come. At first, Ender was hated for being such a talented student at the age of six but was soon respected after he was able to beat all the other armies with just a bunch of little kids. Ender became the best soldier at Battle School and was moved up to Command School where he would learn to command
In chapter 13, Valentine gets to see Ender and she is told to convince him into going back to battle school and continue his education. Ender was having a hard time with fighting in all the battles because he didn't want to end up like Peter. Even when times get rough and he didn't want to go back, he never gave up he fought and he conquered his fears and doubts and went back to battle school. This relates back to the theme because even when he was having a hard time with the battles and fighting, he didn't give up and went back. In Ender's game Alai says, “... The way Mazer talk about it, you were becoming a vegetable,” what he is saying is that Ender has been sleeping for days was super sleep deprived. In the book Ender fought the final battle and won, he had been up for so many days doing other battles than he never got sleep. He never gave, up and stayed up for days to win the battles. This shows up that in the real world that we should never give up and fight for what we want. Ender never backed down, he fought and he won, so maybe if we fight for what we want we can get things in life. Ender in the beginning of the book was the weakest link and he had to grow a lot even though he was super smart. Ender at the end of the book was a skilled fleet commander and he never gave up and brought his people to
When Ender is at the battle school, it is evident that the training and harsh atmosphere is taking a toll on him, “Since becoming commander, he never slept more than five hours a night…Sometimes he worked at his desk…straining his eyes to use the dim display. Usually, though, he stared at the invisible ceiling and thought” (Card 174). Later, he is not even able to get a joke, “therefore Dr. Device. It was a joke.’ Ender didn’t see what was funny about it” (Card 273). When Ender discovered he was tricked into destroying the entirety of the buggers, he became depressed thinking about the genocide that he had just committed, “Real. Not a game. Ender’s mid was too tired to cope with it all. They weren’t just points of light in the air, they were real ships that he had fought with and real ships he had destroyed. And a real world he had blasted to oblivion” (Card 297).
No environment will ever stay strange for Man. Man is built to last, adapt, and progress. “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change”-Charles Darwin. In Pierre Boulle’s novel, Planet of The Apes, the characters are faced with the dilemma of having to adjust to the culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants on the planet Soror. Boulle demonstrates that man can assimilate to any environment one finds themselves in, no matter how displaced they are.
