Planning and Strategic Planning – Case Study The following report answers six questions from a case study titled Planning and Strategic Planning. The report examines the theory of planning and strategic management and relates it to an organization called the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. NAIT’s Vision and Mission and how The “Promises” Can Be Used to Help Set the Basis for NAIT’s planning The first step in the strategic management process is to identify the organization’s current vision, mission, goals and strategies. The vision and mission of an organization provides its statement of purpose (Robbins, DeCenzo, Coulter, & Anderson, 2014, p. 66). While the vision is able to explain what the business will be in the future, the mission defines the organization’s reason for being in business (Robbins, DeCenzo, Coulter, & Anderson, 2014, p. 66). Planning is defined as a process that involves the defining of goals and establishing a comprehensive strategy for achieving the goals (Robbins, DeCenzo, Coulter, & Anderson, 2014, p. 57). In line with the definition of a vision, NAIT as an institution of learning, set up a business plan for its future-focused document entitled NAIT 2021; which is to be a relevant, responsive and a leading polytechnic in the world (NAIT, 2015, p. 10).
