According to the planning consultants of Somersworth, New Hampshire (2010) a new Master Plan has been revised for a vision into 2020 due to significant investment in both the private and public sector. Somersworth is currently undergoing significant change since 2000 and these modifications to the city allow for several social and economic opportunities in the area. Development and redevelopment that has occurred since 2000 has been the relocation of both City Hall and the Police Department, the renovation of an old mill building into residential units and small business offices, an expansion of retail development and medical offices, constructing a connector road from High Street to Route 108, establishing business parks, developing a golf course and a recreational facility, upgrading the wastewater treatment facilities, and lastly, dedicating land acquisition to conservation purposes (Master Plan Update, 2010).
The basis of this paper is to layout improvements that can be made to the Master Plan of Somersworth, as well as provide improvements for the community. One of the most prominent assets to the Master Plan was appointing a committee for the 2020 Vision in hopes to create a positive future. Some of the goals the committee is striving to accomplish are as follows: an ability to take a strategic goal and turn it into a practical plan, an incorporation of a revitalization plan, an evaluation of new ways for economic growth, enabling a conservation plan for a sustainable
This paper focuses on an in depth community assessment of the past, present, and future of Shelby, Mississippi. Shelby was once a banner cotton center of Bolivar County. Shelby residents were once referred to as some of the most hospitable and happy people in the state. Shelby, Mississippi was also considered as one of the wealthiest towns per capita of the entire Mississippi Delta. Throughout the years, Shelby has changed from being a place of prosperity to a place needing revitalization. Many businesses have opened and closed in Shelby. Community development in Shelby would allow the town to compete with other small towns in the Mississippi Delta.
The reason for this report was to explain the steps that were taken to create and implement this action plan and the outcomes. My three actions were established to help carry out my vision of bringing together
The city of New London Connecticut had made economic recovery efforts to sustain a severely downtrodden local economy. Those efforts included a plan to acquire 115 parcels of real estate in order to redevelop an area of commercial, residential and recreational elements. The plan consisted of removing homes to build a new development in order to create jobs, increase tax revenue, and better allow for the city to
After reading the case study Welcome to the new town manager, by Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt, I established three major problems the community of Opportunity needed to correct. These problems involved the water & sewer system, the balancing budget, & the pay-as-you-go method. The city manager, Jennifer Holbrook, must implement strategies that would correct these problems quickly.
Herman Webster Mudgett was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire in May 1861 to Levi and Theodate Mudgett. Levi was a farmer and a devout Methodist, lessons he would aggressively try to instill in young Herman. Herman immediately exceled in school and this caused him to be bullied. The bullying would inevitably lead him to his obsession with death and his inclination towards the macabre. One day bullies forced him into a doctor’s office and made him stare at the skeleton figure he had face to face, while he was looking someone made the skeletal hands touch Herman’s face. Herman recalled being frightened at first but then later found the experience fascinating, this experience cured him of any fears he may develop and allowed him to pursue a new hobby of dissecting animals.
In this essay, I will be taking on the role of the head administrator, of the Northumberland Community Garden. I will be writing a proposal letter to the American Community Gardens Association, to try and receive funding for the Northumberland Community Gardens. In this letter, I will give a basic outline of the program development stages, evaluation process, and financial aspects of my organization. I will also include other information that would be considered relevant to understanding my purpose for creating this program.
McVey believes the city’s main concerns should be getting its financial health back, organizing its management and prioritising the economy. “We cannot put more police officers on the street, we cannot fix the potholes and the infrastructure, and fix other problems without revenue.”
The growth of the County is detailed through several planning elements: demographics, population needs, housing, economic development, environment, community character, parks and recreation, public facilities, transportation, land use. Many goals include, a focus to establish a sustainable long-term supply of water systems, an improvement of infrastructure, facilities, and simultaneously modernize with technological systems. Other initiatives include the establishment of mixed-use development, and several land-use surveys for future schools road projects. The economic development goal is to expand and diversify the economy by making the County more business-friendly. Another goal is the concern for the overall aesthetics of the County such as tree standards, open space development, and redevelopment of underutilized property. Other population needs include the modernization of public services including parks, sport complexes, but also services to the elderly, disabled, and low income citizens (James City County,

Although it will take a lot of time and effort to rectify the conditions at Newtown Creek, the variety in the recommendations from all the groups shows how many options are available to go about it. Some of the ideas need some more foresight in accounting for all three pillars. For example, it is not always a good idea to focus too much on environmental needs if the tradeoffs put social needs at too high of a risk. Even so, each suggestion has its own merit, especially when you use them together. By implementing multiple ideas you are tackling more then one issue/pillar at a time. Therefore, the overall outcome is better then limiting the benefits to a specific area of mediation. As Gestalt’s Theory in psychology states, “the whole is greater then the sum of the parts.” To have a successful whole you must have numerous inter-reliant components with different levels of priority depending on effectiveness, cost, social impact, and time frame.
Prior to the adoption of the Plan, the National and local economies were strong. As a result, New Castle had begun to experience significant change. The intent of the Plan was to establish a path for community growth that, while accommodating new housing, businesses, services, jobs, parks/open spaces, non-motorized access systems, transportation, environmental protection and community infrastructure, would ensure that growth and change would not adversely the small-town character and community values that residents wanted to preserve.
Anyone who knows anything about Morehouse knows that this school's main mission is to serve the community, including minorities and the underserved. This is what I found appealing about Morehouse and is the main reason that I want to pursue my medical training at this medical school. My main goal is to provide healthcare for people who, under normal circumstances, would generally not have access to adequate healthcare. There have been times where people who are close to me, and my self included, have had to use community health care as a source of treatment. The doctors who treated us were not only helpful in making sure that we were able to recover from our ailments, but they also treated us with respect. I am grateful to those physicians
While the plan appears to be thorough and complete, this very characteristic may also prove to be a weakness. As sustainable technologies and even planning methodologies improve, a plan as cohesive as the current Portland Plan may leave little breathing room to accommodate the integration of future improvements without large investments and comprehensive re-planning. In addition, plans as comprehensive as this one is tend to leave less room for the creative expression, which adds diversity and charm to the cities neighborhoods. In terms of raw efficiency, the choice to make this plan a joint effort between the city government and the citizens themselves, though a noble cause, can cause each step to take much longer, and even the delay of the project in its entirety due to the volatility of entire populations. One final risk of the plan, is the risk associated with time. As any program needs money to continue on, people must continue to vote for the Portland Plan’s various programs over the years in order for them to maintain funding, so that they may continue bringing about the sustainable Portland as exists within the plan. The plan is to take place over 25-years, over the course of which any number of variables may change. The issue is things may change over the course of those 25-years, that could cause people to lose support for the plans various programs. Likewise, over
When conducting a needs assessment, people’s needs with in the community are assessed to see where gaps lie and improvements can be made. If carried out and reported correctly these needs are then bought to local government or relevant organisations/peoples attention, giving the opportunity for programs to be put in place to benefit the people of the community. This is where the third step of Finifter, Jensen, Wilson & Koenig (2005) process comes into place; the implementation of projects to assist where the gaps were found. “Implementation of recommended solutions should be the ultimate goal of any project to improve services and quality of life of a target population (Neely, T R).” The more efficient all three steps are carried out the stronger this method becomes. “The importance of disseminating results effectively using these guidelines cannot be stressed enough. A needs assessment will have achieved nothing if the results are not communicated effectively (Neely, T R).”
However there are still different attitudes to redevelopment, some claim that the scheme was completed with "tremendous optimism” and it’s believed, "The area's beginning to look up, but you do get people saying we will never get out of this rot, that the area's too run down." And physically,
