Defining Your Business The first step in developing an effective MBO program is to define your business. Ask yourself the following questions: ! ! ! What business am I in? Is my definition right for today 's market? Do I need to change my business to meet emerging customer needs?
A clear vision of your business is crucial for planning your marketing, product development, buildings and equipment, and financial and staff needs. For example, a drop in sales caused a small business manufacturer of metal trash cans to reexamine its product. To regain lost sales, the owner decided to redefine the product as metal containers and to develop a new marketing plan.
Setting Goals
Long-range business goals will be the cornerstone of your company 's MBO program. To achieve these goals, you must have a method to communicate them to your managers and employees. One way is to bring managers and employees into the process by asking them to help formulate the company 's short- and long-range goals. If they have a role in establishing the goals, they will be more committed to achieving them. All goals should relate to and support the long-range objectives for the company. With 33 million Americans utilizing healthcare services as a means to manage mental health conditions and illnesses, adequate delivery of mental healthcare, treatment, and practice is becoming increasingly more important in the American landscape of wellness (SAMHSA, 2004a). The mental health system continues to be a challenging area of healthcare, due to: increased usage of coercion into treatment, diversity in care delivery systems, an unevolved quality measurement mechanism, and a drastically different business and marketplace infrastructure. These factors added to the, already, present stigma associated with mental health, culminates into an extremely

In the introduction of The Planning Game, Alexander Garvin shares his experience as an instructor teaching the planning process to students by having students engage in a game to learn the fundamentals of the planning process. The game consists of individuals and/or groups who identify positive and negative consequences in making changes in an area. The game consistently includes winners and losers, with winners being more skilled at finding solutions or alternatives to consequences. The goal is to learn how planners intricately network and share ideas toward making cost-effective improvements within a community.
6. Create company goals and objectives- Goals are long range attributers that the firm seeks to accomplish. Objectives are quantifiable and more precise- they should be specific, measurable, assignable, realistic, timely, and written down. This can be tied into the vision and mission statements. My company’s goal is to satisfy the needs of the customers. My objectives will be to provide quality services to customers by greeting them when they walk through the door, maintaining a clean environment, and having a positive attitude.

The principles of goal setting are applied over 3 main areas. They were sector changes, organizational changes and employee expectations. Sector changes include those that are socio-economic, cultural, technological changes, revised standards or accreditation standards, and play a major role in how the sector transforms itself. HIS constantly updates its policies and its operations to keep up with changing government standards and yearly updates. For example, a technical shift has been from a paper to digital environment and has many implications in the way the organization functions. For a unique business concept to come to fruition it needs to start with a plan. The United States Small Business Administration, also known as SBA for short, can help prospective small business owners take their concepts and turn them into reality. “SBA was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government … that helps Americans start, build and grow businesses (Mission Statement 2013).” To do this, the SBA has simplified a six section business plan that can be completed on their website and saved for future use. The six sections of the SBA business plan are: an executive summary, company overview, marketing research, product(s) and/or service(s), marking and sales, and, lastly, financial projections. Basically, inscribing or printing out the aims of the company and being capable to see them on a day-to-day basis can keep you continuously attentive on your proposal than only comprehending what your goals are in your mentality. When establishing your goals, you must depend on the SMART goal-setting method. SMART stands for “Specific, Measurable, Agreed to, Realistic and Timely”.
