Hippocrates was born on Kos, an island in the Aegean Sea. He lived from about 460 B.C.E. to 375 B.C.E., though some sources disagree. Hippocrates came from an upper class family, and studied in school for about 11 years. He became interested in medicine from studying under his father, and had training which likely included travels to Mainland Greece, Egypt, and Libya. In his prime, Hippocrates healed many including treating the king of Macedonia for Tuberculosis. While fighting the plague in Athens for three years (430-427 BCE), his dedication to healing was tested greatly. Later in his life, he taught his sons, Thessalus and Draco, the art of healing. Hippocrates ended up opening a medical school on Kos around 400 BCE and wrote the Hippocratic Corpus which is a collection of about 70 books. Hippocrates is credited with writing the books but Hippocrates wrote only some of his books while his students wrote most of them.
