There are many different poems all over the world. Some are old with lots of meaning and some are newer with no meaning at all. Poems are made up of different elements to make the poem flow. All of these devices are important and are necessary to have to make a poem extravagant. A poem that I enjoyed in this poetry section is “Resume” by Dorothy Parker and a poem that I did not like very much was, “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. Resume was written in 1926. I believe that one of the reasons why I like this poem so much is because it is meaningful and takes a serious matter, but is a light verse at the same time. There are many things about this poem that make it work and flow well. Parker uses lots of imagery throughout the whole poem. I get a fantastic image when we read “Rivers are damp” (2). In this line Dorothy is talking about someone trying to commit suicide by drowning themselves, this is not the best image, but I still get a clear idea of what is trying to happen. That is not the only line that creates a picture, the words also provide a great image. All of the words in this poem provide a harsh representation and the words that do this are, razors, rivers, acids, pills, guns, nooses, and gas. Another device that Parker …show more content…
This title could be read as resume and we get the impression to continue something. After reading the poem we get the idea that the author is saying to resume your life, finish living. When we put accents in the word we get résumé. Most people may think that this is an odd title choice because a résumé is something that is used for jobs, like a list of accomplishments. Failed suicide attempts are not considered accomplishments to people, but a list of accomplishments from the speaker’s point of view from the struggles that they were dealing with. The word play between these two words help the poem maintain a balance between a serious matter and light
Sharlet Cannon English 1302-56328 Professor T. Heflin August 9th, 2015 The Mother Abortion, a sensitive topic most people don’t want to talk about or try to figure out ways for it to be out-lawed. " The Mother," a poem written by Gwendolyn Brooks looks at abortion from a mothers’ point of view. This poem deals with the heartfelt emotions that a woman may go through after she has had an abortion. The theme, tone and figures of speech written displays overwhelming regret tormenting her mind.
We real cool When I first read “We Real Cool” I pictured a group of “cool kids,” a band of misfits playing hooky and skipping class. In line three when Brooks says “Lurk late,” I imagined the kids loitering out around the town late at night, stirring up trouble, singing songs with profanity or vulgar imagery drinking gin watered down with tonic or juice. “Jazz June” sounds like a promotion for a jazz club that the kids would go to on a late June night when school is on break. Then, after all the fun, some of them young by drunk driving or violence or drugs or whatever unfortunate fate falls upon them.
The poem “We Real Cool” is a very powerful poem, although expressed with very few words. To me, this poem describes the bottom line of the well known “ghetto life”. It describes the desperate and what they need, other than the usual what they want, money. Without actually telling us all about the seven young men, it does tell us about them. The poem tells of the men’s fears, their ambitions, and who they think they are, versus who they really are.
“We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks is a fervent short poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that create a steady meter giving the poem a catchy jazz like quality. Although the poem is short, it packs a powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the 1960’s when the poem was written, many teens especially young African-American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. On the surface, it appears this poem is a mere description of young adults that are misjudged. The deeper message of this poem addresses the dangers of peer pressure, and its detrimental effects to self-identity because of the disconnect between society and youth of that time.
"We Real Cool" is a short, yet powerful poem by Gwendolyn Brooks that sends a life learning message to its reader. The message Brooks is trying to send is that dropping out of school and roaming the streets is in fact not "cool" but in actuality a dead end street.
Love is not always an easy adventure to take part in. As a result, thousands of poems and sonnets have been written about love bonds that are either praised and happily blessed or love bonds that undergo struggle and pain to cling on to their forbidden love. Gwendolyn Brooks sonnet "A Lovely Love," explores the emotions and thoughts between two lovers who are striving for their natural human right to love while delicately revealing society 's crime in vilifying a couples right to love. Gwendolyn Brooks uses several examples of imagery and metaphors to convey a dark and hopeless mood that emphasizes the hardships that the two lovers must endure to prevail their love that society has condemned.
uses the metaphor ‘We sing sin’. Everyone who chooses the wrong path believes it to
The poem 'We Real Cool' by Gwendolyn Brooks is a stream of the thoughts of poor inner city African-Americans who have adopted a hoodlum lifestyle. Though many can have different interpretations of this poem, it is fair to look at the life and career or the works and influences of Gwendolyn Brooks.
When you read a poem you can come from it with an overall feeling and figure out by context clues how the author’s feelings were of the subject as well. “It’s a Woman’s World” written by Eavan Boland goes through the struggles and restraints society hold to being a woman. The speaker had a complex with it being a “Women’s word” and you can see that through diction, imagery and symbolism.
The poem “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, to summarize is about how the “pool players” (line 1) do not entirely care about school, as well as anything that is remotely good leaving them all to relish in the uncertainty of their demise. In the first stanza is where there is more substance, with “we real cool. We / Left school.” (lines 3-4), creating the image of the pool players leaving school, possibly having dropped out. The second stanza lets the reader know that the players are spending their time out late, with the lines “Lurk late. We / Strike straight.” (lines 5-6) and not up to anything good. The third stanza is where the players start to celebrate all the mischief they have caused by drinking the sorrows away, in the lines “Sing sin. We / Thin gin.” (lines 7-8). The last stanza “Jazz June. We / Die soon.” (lines 9-10) is focused on the realization on how it might be Summer, but are not aware, since other individuals do not believe that they should be alive much longer, from their bad habits and everything in between.
In Gwendolyn Brooks poem “We Real Cool,” she uses alliteration and rhymes to make the poem sound jazzy and sassy, however, there is a much more powerful meaning to this poem. Gwendolyn illustrates in the poem that troubled teenagers who live fast will die young.
“We Real Cool” is a poem that was written by poet Gwendolyn Brooks in the year of 1959. This poem states that the black young people in the United States went through to make a clear definition of themselves and tried to seek their values in the late fifties and early sixties, young kids knowing they are different from the society, so they started their abandonment from a young age, they give up school because they know they cannot be accept as other white kids, they were caught in things as rape, murder and robbery because that's the only thing the now to express their anger. They do everything that seems fun to them then die young because they have no hope left for them. These African American young ones are living in
The title itself of Resumé has a double meaning. A Resume is something you give to a job you're applying for, listing your achievements. The eight line poem spends seven of the lines exploring parallel lines about qualifying suicide attempts. Resume could also mean to go on, continue living. This would apply more to the end of the poem where Parker says ‘ You might as well live’.
Poetry, what is poetry? Poetry is a genre of literature that expresses feelings and ideas that may incorporate meter, rhyme, and scheme. The majority of poems accommodates these poetic elements due to the fact that they enhance the effect the poem has on its reader. An example of all three elements can be found in the poem “We Real Cool” written by Gwendolyn Brooks. It reads, “We real cool.
To begin, Hughes’ uses his diction to create a distinct mood for his poem. For example, when one reads the poem without first reading the title, “The calm, Cool face of the river Asked me for a kiss,” they may create in their own head a calm, positive or happy mood. The words may remind one of summer days at the lake or the beautiful view of a river valley. The author does this on purpose as he wants the reader to be relaxed. With the title, “Suicide’s Note,” attached, however, the mood automatically becomes more solemn. Hughes gives his readers this title because he wants them to understand that this poem has a meaning beyond what can be seen at first glance. Nothing in these lines really reveals a tone, or the author’s attitude toward the subject, which makes the mood that much more more important. The author establishes that his, or anyone’s, thoughts or feelings
