People are drawn to poetry because it uses words to express emotions that most people

The longer a poem shall be, the more meaningful the message of the poem hides. One can read a poem repeatedly and never fully understand the message behind it. It is not until one breaks down every line and thinks deeper before they are able to convey the message. The poem “Kites” by Stephanie Burt expresses how no matter what one will do, they never truly have control. It always seems as if the control is to be in the hands of another, and the only thing they can do is fly willingly.

Poetry has a role in society, not only to serve as part of the aesthetics or of the arts. It also gives us a view of what the society is in the context of when it was written and what the author is trying to express through words. The words as a tool in poetry may seem ordinary when used in ordinary circumstance. Yet, these words can hold more emotion and thought, however brief it was presented.

There are many different kinds of artist; Singers, painters, sculptors, poets, and many more. Each artist uses a different outlet to express their emotions in some way other than words. Poets are just one great example of this. They are able to string enchanting words together to create a masterpiece. “After the Trial” by Weldon Kees, is just one example of a great poem.

To quote the poet Robert Frost, poetry “...is a reaching-out toward expression; an effort to find fulfillment. Poems consist of a variation of different techniques in order to convey a message or idea to readers. Wilfred Owen, Thomas Hardy, Adrienne Rich, Bruce Dawe and Robert Browning are great poets who explore these issues, conveying their emotions, which influences a perception of an issue. In each of their poems they express the hidden message of hope, along with their main message. They use similar techniques to express their ideas, which illustrates their purpose to the reader.

Poetry is used to describe more than it is used to define. Poetry expresses feeling and emotions more than just a detailed story. Poetry can be used to go deeper into someone’s personal thoughts and emotions. In “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” by William Shakespeare, “The Whipping” by Robert Hayden, and “The Man He Killed” by Thomas Hardy are great examples of how inner emotions can be revealed through poetry. The three selections also give examples of how they follow good poetry.

Every poem, fable, story or work of art was created to show an author's idea and let them be expressed freely, by reading their works you can find what kind of situation or place they have come from. This rule usually applies to people from the same culture or area who have struggled with similar issues and face the same decisions. We can all have a dream from the depths of third world countries to the top of multi millionaire mansions and every person in between, the way we try to achieve those dreams can be different, but the feeling we get when we achieve them is great, sadly some people can only hope that they will come true, and are forced to live in horrendous locations under strict laws until they succumb to the pressure or are left to face death. And the ones who live to tell, want their story to be told for generations, many choose to write it in poetry and other works of art to preserve it.

As an English poet who lived through the “age of unrest” (1902–1971), Stevie Smith had a mysterious life. Although Smith claimed that the characters she wrote about did not exist outside her work, her novel is considered self-reflective, and later turned into a play and a movie. Her unique poems also shed lights on her life. Stevie Smith’s unusual life experiences and viewpoints impact her poems immensely in the aspects of simple forms, detached emotion, and uncanny themes.

Writing poetry allows open doors into worlds never discovered before. Using similes and metaphors allows me to express feelings about being in and experiencing nature. As well, poetry allows exploration of nature, discovering what can lie behind the facade of a waterfall or a forest. Analyzing poems is just an opportunity to glean insight to other people’s thoughts. Often, when we read poems, we do not spend enough time to discover the meaning past the words on the page. Invented forms of poetry is another way to enjoy creating poetry. Having fun and expressing thoughts can allow freedom to compose the most expressive types of poetry.
