Police brutality is when cops use unnecessary force while dealing with citizens and it takes place in many different ways. The most common and recognized type of police brutality is physical abuse, but there is also verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, false arrests, racism, and improper use of guns and Tasers. Police brutality is a huge crisis in our country and needs to be eliminated. Police are supposed to be people we can trust to protect us, prevent crime, and enforce the laws. However, with the increasing amounts of innocent people killed by the police, it is becoming nearly impossible to trust our law enforcement officers. How are we supposed to continue relying …show more content…
This resulted in the death of a seven-year old girl named Aiyana Stanley-Jones, who was sleeping on a couch at the time and presented no threat to the officers. In October of 2014, manslaughter charges against the officer, Joseph Weekley, who fatally shot the child, were dismissed. Also in Detroit, an off-duty police officer accidentally shot and killed a 24 year old woman while dancing with her at a party. He had no permit to carry the gun as he was off-duty, but was still cleared of any wrong doing by the court .Police need to learn that owning a badge does not grant them extra rights. As citizens of America, we should not have to feel like we need protected from our
An article in the Washington Post revealed that across the nation 963 people were shot and killed by police in 2016. This puts police in a losing situation. Not only have they lost the trust of many, but they are now portrayed as the enemy. A police officer’s duty is to protect the people and enforce the law. After the shootings, people don’t see them as protecting anyone, but instead harming the population. More than often now the perception is that they are the bad guys who take advantage of their power.
2. When the police kill unarmed citizens, the officer is often not charged but cities across the nation pay hundreds of millions of dollars to settle these cases with the families of the victims. Why do cities consistently pay this money? no one is trying to stop what is going on because it is an irrelevant situation that

The topic that I am proposing is police brutality. Are police officers committing police brutality or are they just doing their job? We as a community are hearing more and more about police brutality in the United States. It is really common to see on the news or social media videos of police brutally beating individuals that seem not to resist arrest or even with their hands up in the air as a sign of surrender. My intended audiences are, communities, and police departments. Communities need to understand why this is happening and if there is going to be any change. On the other hand, police departments need to not more a blind eye any more when these situations occur and start disciplining the officers. I am a true believer of
In the news, there are many discussions on the topics of police brutality, police officers not being indicted, police retraining, and protests for justice of an alleged innocent person killed by the police. According to The Washington Post, “So far this year, police have shot and killed more than 900 people.” Admiration then starts to swirl in your head and you ask yourself “how many of those 900 people killed were innocent.” This is why many anti-brutality activists and law enforcement leaders are pushing for police officers to be retrained. They are implementing a plan of action for change in the policing business. Police officers need to be effectively retrained and grasp the proper skills such as verbal communication to being a good police officer.
What gives someone the right to put forcefully put there hands on someone without a person’s consent ? What gives someone the right to think they can take advantage of other people , because they think they’re above the law ? Or is it because they think they have the right because they have a badge ? Either way shouldn’t all people be punished the same for doing something wrong ? Or do certain people just get away with crimes because they wear a police uniform.
In today’s society, some police officers seem to abuse their power and take law enforcement to new heights. Police officers have consistently used excessive force; what black people call police brutality. Even though there is a great deal of officers that serve their jurisdictions for the sole purpose of acting as a source of protection and creating an example, some have a separate vendetta. Although this may appear as astonishing to many, the event of police brutality on minorities has become more of a nationwide issue especially between white officer and black victims. However, some officers are put into compromising situations in which they must make split second decisions that may not always exemplify the duties or
Adjudicating those responsible for specific situation is important. But, as we’ve seen, that doesn’t always have a positive result for that one case or for addressing the root of the problem. Law enforcement is part of the legal system. One wonders what it takes to get a court of law to find error in the actions of the police. A court of law addressing the cases one by one may not be the right place to solve our societal problems. The source may more likely be in the structure of their training and job. Thus just taking each case one at a time does nothing to stop the situation from reoccurring. As has been noted, police brutality is very sick and cruel. Police beatings can really be a downfall in a community, losing all faith in what a police
Criminal justice and police brutality, are very important current event topics. The actions of police are finally starting to come into notice. Police are rapidly starting to abuse their rights and authorities by killing, accusing, and wrong doing the citizens in America. Finally people are starting to speak up and take action on what the police are doing, and the law is also starting to do something about it. For years police could do pretty much whatever they wanted to, to citizens and were able to get away with it, but now people are actually starting to speak up. Recent situations starting from 2012 up until now, mainly had to do with a police killing an innocent citizen. It is clear to see that people are not dealing with this anymore
Police brutality is one of the most serious and divisive human rights violations in the United States and it occurs in every community. The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are engaged in a dangerous and stressful occupation that can involve violent situations that must be controlled. In many of these confrontations with the public it may become necessary for the police to administer force to take control of a situation. Sometimes this force takes the form of hand to hand combat with a suspect who resists being arrested. Not all police officers in communities are good cops. At least once a year the news is covering a story about a person
Although police officers take an oath to protect and serve citizens in our society. we have some officers that our corrupt and willing do anything just to protect themselves from being exposed from their unethical behavior. In 1994 three officers from New Orleans police department committed an unspeakable crime murder for hire and a violent drug gang. The killing of Kim grove was thirty-two years old and was gunned down by police officer that were there to protect her instead they killed her.
Every day, there seems to be a new name added to the list of the people killed by the members of the police force. Whether you look in New York State or around the country, many of these so-called saviors have been doing nothing short of slaughtering person after person and getting away just by flashing their badges. It is clear that the missions of some of these “precious civil servants” are doing more harm than good. How can we trust the police force to possess lethal weapons if they can’t stop their violence for long enough to wash the blood from their hands? The purpose of the police force is to protect, but citizens have been feeling anything but safe around officers. Over the years, the New York Police Department has
Over the years United States has witnessed a substantial increase in police brutality, it is one of the most common and serious violation of the human rights and it happens more often than we care to know in our communities, ranging from verbal to physical abuse in which usually an innocent person results injured as police officers lay their called justice upon the alleged criminals.
There has been a great deal of police-related incidents in the news during the past year. In some cases, the police were cleared, and in some lesser-known cases the police were even arrested and held accountable. It would appear to the casual observer that most of the cases were resolved in favor of the law enforcement officer, and many individuals feel that this is unfair. In some cases, this could be true to a certain extent. However, this is not true in the way that many people would think. The fact of the matter is, 99 times out of 100 the cops are not bad people that deliberately set out at the beginning of every shift to ruin people 's lives. They are out there strictly to protect their jurisdiction and serve the community at large. Indeed, in Gaines and Kappeler 's book they actually dedicate their work to an individual police chief who was instrumental in beginning a program to help parents who could not afford a child safety seat be able to obtain one simply by going to the department and getting one. (Gaines and Kappeler, dedication) However, law enforcement is one of the most difficult professions out there even under the best of circumstances. When a police officer has to navigate a cold and uncaring management and a society that feels like law enforcement is not working in their best interest, even the best of law enforcement personnel can become burned out in a small amount of time. This kind of disconnect can happen even in law enforcement agencies that are
