Canine officers, have been using dogs in their patrol and investigation forces, including narcotics, SWAT, and even homicide to apprehend criminals and detect criminal evidence successfully for over two decades. Dogs are not just cute and fuzzy friends. Since it has been thousands of years that dogs have been trained to do things for humans, we can now count on dogs to do very specific jobs. For example, the article from the U.S. Department of Justice says, “Service animals are defined as dogs that are
The 16 dogs in this unit are used for different purposes. They have Patrol dogs and sniffer dogs. These dogs are trained because of their superior sense of smell, and ability to search and find in impossible places. K9 Unit uses their sniffer dogs in arson, tracking, detecting of explosives and narcotics. After reading the articles Dog’s on duty and Service Dogs, Patients Bond Through Health Care Partnership, I decided that the first skill a dog must learn to become a service dog/police dog is a high sense of smell, especially to become a police dog. From the article Dog’s on duty: “He and other police dogs across the country are skilled at sniffing out danger and keeping people safe.” Dogs are said to have a sense of smell 1000 times better than a human being which is helpful if a dog needs to sniff out a bomb or something equally as dangerous. Those are my reasons why I think dogs absolutely need a good sense of smell.
Dogs dramatically impact the lives of people in numerous aspects. Not only do they work for humans tirelessly, but they do it with a smile on their face and a wag in their tail, and they are non-judgmental towards people with disabilities. People utilized the help and companionship dogs provided even hundreds of years ago. However, many people see dogs as futile, considering training, money, time, and work that is put into owning a dog, let alone having it specifically trained to do a certain job. It is also risky putting so much time and effort into a dog, being aware that they are very capable of making mistakes just as humans are. Also, many people do not know the depth of the work that dogs provide, or
They have been trained to search for people, bombs, and even drugs. “The United States Police Canine Association became the largest and oldest active organization of its kind- “Ever striving for the betterment of all police K-9” – in August, 1971 when two existing associations, the Police K-9 Association and the United States K-9 Association, merged” (O’Heare). These two organizations now know that strength is in unity. From these groups merged different types of canine from basic patrol dog to the scent specialty dog and final to the great detector dog. Law Enforcement requires canines that have outstanding performance and physical/psychological health. Also, canines should be balanced in aggression behavior and social play. There is an abundance of good and bad to learn about
In ancient Rome, Roman warriors marched into battle alongside fierce war dogs. Some hunting dogs of Ancient Egypt that were greatly prized got mummified alongside their owners. Before cutlery and napkins had come into the world, people would use them to wipe their greasy hands on after an evening meal, and afterward, when they went to bed, on a cold winter night, the owners would make the dogs lie on their feet to keep them warm. The Kings of Europe, to avoid poisoning, wouldn't eat until the dog ate some of the food on their plate. On Lewis and Clark's exploration of the new world, their trusty companion, a big black dog named Seaman, saved their lives by chasing away a buffalo that was trying to stampede their camp. In modern times, dogs are used in the armed forces to sniff out bombs on a war field, sniff out missing people from the rubble of a natural disaster, and there are also police dogs used to sniff out drugs, food, and even people. They are also used for companionship in families today. For paralyzed people, such as a blind person, is led by a service dog. In nursing homes, some dogs have been proven to be effective when comforting the sick or elderly. What other jobs do dogs have in our
K9s are used to find drugs.Police departments use them for that reason because k9s have about 200 million sense when humans have about 5 million so that’s why k9s are used for that purpose. Police dogs are also use to hunt down bad people.

Cute, fun, loving, cuddly, outgoing; these are only a few words to describe the animals that we have come to know and love as a part of our families.
