Famous Historical and Political Female Serial Killers A serial killer is traditionally defined as an individual who commits separate killings of three or more people over a certain period of time, generally with breaks between the murders, at the same time leaving a similar sign on all their victims. Serial killers are not a new phenomenon to our society. They are violent, brutal monsters and have an abnormal urge to kill. While we are used to saying that most of the violent crimes are committed by men, women killers have also played a leading role for the criminal performances throughout the history of mankind. All these women lived in different periods of time. But all of them share one common trait - being a serial killer. Jane Topan, for example, had her name written in the history as a “nurse of death” She was accused of racking up dozens of victims between 1885 and 1902. While in police custody Toppan admitted to being aroused by the process of killing and was eventually found to be insane and not guilty of her crimes. Another striking example in the history was Rosemary West, who along with her husband was convicted of murdering ten young women in 1995. All the motives of these serial killers still remain unveiled. Therefore, throughout history there were queens who judging from their actions and political motives could be considered serial killers. One of them was the Queen of England and Ireland Mary I whose executions of Protestants in the 16th century led to creating a worldwide famous metaphor and modern alcohol drink – cocktail called “Bloody Mary”. Mary’s motives were completely political as it was usual for those times to rush to throne sweeping everything on their way. Mary is remembered for her restoration of Roman Catholicism after the short-lived Protestant reign of her brother. During her five-year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the so-called “Marian Persecutions”. She was so brutal that she was also trying to kill her sister – the future Queen of England – Elizabeth I. Another noble serial woman killer was Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, who was born in the renowned Báthory family of nobility in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 16th century. She has been labeled as the most prolific female serial killer in history. Although the number of murders is debated, and she is remembered as the “Blood Countess”, she was the infamous serial killer of Hungary.
