When the ancient peoples of the past expanded their group sizes from small bands to larger chiefdoms, they gained a certain level of increased political leadership. This stage of growth involved a process of urbanization were eighty percent of the population lived within cities. These first cities had strictly drawn social positions and were involved in trade with neighboring cities.
