Pollution Control
Often while driving through the valley you may start to smell a particular difference in the air, and not in a good way. Perhaps you didn’t know that San Joaquin Valley is one of two districts in the county to be classified by Enviornmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “extreme nonattainment” ("The Air District’s Mission"), which means it is considered to have the worst air quality; worse than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards as defined in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970 ("Google"). Also, San Joaquin County is one of the nine areas in the country to be designated as a “serious nonattainment” area for particulate matter ("The Air District’s Mission"). Although the air quality is not great here in the valley since

You can’t escape the heat so you move towards the bottom where air is a bit cooler and much easier to breath. Because of this high pressure the Central Valley gets these thermal inversions a lot. At night the cool air layer can grow greatly, possibly reaching up to 3000 feet thick. With this thick air the pollutants are trapped beneath the warm air until the sun gets to it and starts equalizing the temperature and allowing the inversion to break up and separate, much like putting out the fire on that house that was …show more content…
The good news was that that “the 375 cities included in the list 36 of them passed the WHO’s air quality standard of 20 micrograms of particulates per cubic meter”. The bad news is that out of the ten worst performing cities; five are located here in the central valley (Berg, "Why Does California's Central Valley Have Such Bad Air Pollution?"). Not much air pollution comes from different places but the northern part of the district which consist of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Merced get 27% of there air pollution from San Francisco Bay & Sacramento. Where as the central region that consist of Fresno, Madera and Kings counties only transport 11% air pollution to us and finally a very minimal of 7% comes from the south valley, which consist of Kern (valley portion) and Tulare Counties ("Is there an air pollution
The District monitors the levels of carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, suspended particulates, fine particulates, lead, and sulfate. The District identifies air pollution concerns, and assists the county, effected cities, and special districts in addressing such concerns (South Coast Air Quality Management District, 2015). In terms of annual PM2.5, the County of Riverside was ranked the sixth most polluted county in the USA in 2016, and in terms of most ozone-polluted counties, it was second. The county had about 55,000 cases of pediatric asthma, 133,000 cases of adult asthma, 85,000 cases of COPD (American Lung Association,
The article discusses the conditions in San Joaquin Valley after the state’s largest fire left it covered in dust. On the one hand, the fire so far has spared lives and homes, but on the other hand, it has caused dangerous drops in air quality that can cause public health problems and threaten life. It discusses what many of the conditions are like since the drought has begun and how the longer wildfire season means more smoke in the air more often. Dr. Jain, an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco said that, “It’s kind of a worst nightmare situation.” I agree because the amount of soot in the air is dangerous for all forms of life and can cause a number of respiratory health problems that can be fatal. Dr. Malik
Las Vegas as well as Nevada had a small problem with Air Quality. Due to the stemming from vehicles, construction, and marketable/industrial enterprises, air pollution has grown. For that reason, they embraced and developed new air quality plans. The last documented exceedances of the air quality standard arose in 1998.
The San Joaquin Valley is home to over 3.5 million people who reside in the counties of Fresno, Kern, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare, Kings, Madera, and San Joaquin. It is approximately 250 miles long, and is surrounded by three different mountain ranges, which gives it a narrow bowl-shape that collects and traps emissions in the surrounding counties. The air quality in the California Central Valley ranks among the worst in the country, which results from high levels of ozone (o3) and particulate matter (PM) that exceed state and federal air quality standards. There are many sources of pollution that contribute to the poor air quality of the Central Valley such as, agriculture operations, motor vehicles, industrial facilities, factories, and
The Central Valley consist of three major counties Modesto, Fresno and Bakersfield. Together these three counties produce a little over half of the nation’s produce. With a population of over 6.5 million people the Central Valley is also consider by Public Policy Institute of California the fastest growing region of California. With the ever growing population and growing need for more agriculture that leads to a larger air quality issue. This paper will discuss the sources, factors, roles, issues of the Central Valley’s air pollution as well as some possibilities of how the community can help.
In the Mojave Desert, the bad air quality is caused mainly by the wildfires, exhaust from vehicles, and power plants in the surrounding areas. The desert’s ecosystem is impacted by elements
There are different components that are contributing to the levels of air pollution in the San Joaquin Valley in California. Those components are the main reason for the air to be polluted and causing harm to the residents of the valley. The San Joaquin Valley is known very well for its agriculture. This according to an article called “Move Over, Los Angeles” By Marylin Berlin Snell talks about the main point of how serious the air quality has been and how it has been becoming worse than the city of Los Angeles. The southern part of the great central valley has now been covered in a brown murky layer of mist being at its worse air quality. The Valley has a “combination of pesticide spraying, heavy duty-diesel equipment, dust stirred up during
Bakersfield California is a fun place for people to go on vacation. There is Beach Park, located near the city that has playing fields, bike paths, skate parks, and barbeque pits. There are lakes to go water skiing and boating, also Kern River County Park that has 50 campsites for a family to bring their children to enjoy a nice outdoor vacation. Restaurants, that force you to try new things and have the experience of eating in an older restaurant building. However, what most people don’t know is that Bakersfield, California is the most polluted places in the United States. In this paper, I will go over the pollution problems, geographic factors, climate conditions, and social activities that contribute to the buildup of air pollution in Bakersfield, California.
The most prominent example of this is Salt Lake City. It is the largest city in Utah, and it is also the most polluted. This is a problem for the citizens of Salt Lake City. The levels of pollution there have more frequently reached unhealthy levels in recent years. This creates a serious health risk to both those with breathing problems and those who are perfectly healthy. “For the last few years, [Salt Lake City] has been grappling with one of the nation's most vexing pollution problems, where atmospheric inversions during the winter months lead to a thick fog of dirty air cloaking the region.” (Seen) It is a severe problem that has only gotten worse with time. Just last year, Salt Lake
What might be a reason why the city of San Francisco and its metropolitan area is not on the list of smoggiest cities for 2012? Maybe because they reduce somehow their pollution during that period.
Under the Clean Air Act, many of these air pollutants have been reduced, but there is still a threat to the quality of life in
Being one of the biggest social issues in Los Angeles, Air pollution has two main reasons: vehicle traffic and population growth. Actually, it is in a such crucial level that scientists indicate that air pollution in Los Angeles may endanger peoples lives. Scientific researches show that the air pollution causes cancer and have an impact on pregnant woman. Advertisements shows us some solutions like making public transportation common and sustainable housing. With the growing population of Los Angeles, something has to be done . Otherwise it is going to be impossible to deal with the air pollution. Population growth in Los
There are various types of air pollution contributors in California such as fire generated pollutants and vehicle traffic, which add particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the air we breathe. According to an article by Union of Concerned Scientists (Cars, trucks, and air pollution, 2014) particulate matter is made up of fine particles soot and metal that can pose serious threats to human health when deep in the lungs. Other pollutants emitted from vehicles are: nitrogen oxide which lowers the body’s defense system against respiratory infections such as pneumonia, carbon monoxide which blocks oxygen from reaching vital organs, sulfur dioxide which is emitted by both power plants and vehicles affect children and asthmatics, and hazardous air pollutants (toxics) which are chemicals that are linked to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014).
Do you know what is in the air we are breathing every day of our lives? The water we drink? What causes us to feel different about the environment we call home? Many different cities, states and countries have different forms of pollution but here in Las Vegas, Nevada, we have almost all of the possible forms of pollution the environment could possibly have. Two of the seven types of pollution that Las Vegas has are land pollution and air pollution. None of these are good for neither our environment’s health nor our own health. Different examples of these types of pollution in Las Vegas are driving a car, smoking cigarettes and all of the construction that has been happening within the past year.
Role playing games Strategy, it’s all about strategy that’s what Roleplaying games like killer are all about. This Article by Guy Martin tell us about a role playing that a high school play every spring. Teens should be allowed to play Roleplaying games because they teach teens important skill for life like problem solving skills, thinking ahead, and being ready for the unexpected. Roleplaying games like killer teach very important life skills like problem solving skill each team that was involved in killer had to kill someone the judge had assigned to them as soon as they had “killed” them they could then move on to other people that were playing.
