In contrast, the marriage in Things Fall Apart is different from King Lear. In Ibo culture, polygamy is acceptable. Polygamy is where men are able to have multiple wives. In this society, a man’s wealth is partly considered by the number of wives he has. Okonkwo is a significant clan leader in Umuofia (tribe). He is very ambitious because he was fearful of failures due to his father’s wrongdoing in the past. His father was portrayed as a lazy man who owed many debts and had no title in the tribe. In Umoufia, a man who had no title would be insulted by calling him a “woman.” For example, in one village meeting, a man challenged Okonkwo, “Without looking at the man,” Okonkwo said, “This meeting is for men” (Achebe 26). This also indicates that women were placed in this society as objects instead of companionship. “His fame rested on personal achievements… he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat…” (Achebe 1). Hence, he has three wives and eight children. Okonkwo has a very bad temper. For instance, when his youngest wife did not come home on time to cook the afternoon meal, “Okonkwo bit his lips as anger…when she returned (Okonkwo) beat her heavily” (Achebe 29). This shows that women in this society do not have power and society allows men to beat women if they were not doing what they were told. Contrarily, in King Lear, women had some authorities such as King Lear’s daughters, Regan and Goneril, due to the division of the kingdom. However, the first wife that the man is married receives respect from other wives. For example, during the palm wine ceremony at Nwakibie’s obi, “Anasi was the first wife and the others could not drink before her, and so they stood waiting (Achebe 20).
