On August 24th in 79 AD at approximately 1300 a cloud appeared over the Roman city of Pompeii. This was all the warning the residents had before the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted. Huge quantities of scalding hot ash, pumice and lava pebbles were thrown into the sky. This then cascaded down across an extensive area. Pompeii was buried under 14 to 17 feet of ash and pumice, and the nearby seacoast was drastically changed. Herculaneum was buried under more than 60 feet of mud and volcanic material. Some residents of Pompeii later returned to dig out their destroyed homes and salvage their valuables, but many treasures were left and then forgotten. Blood sports were the most popular form of entertainment in Pompeii. They were held in the Amphitheatre. The Amphitheatre was the largest building in Pompeii. It held between 13000 and 20000 people. The Pompeian Amphitheatre was an oval shaped building with approximately 35 rows of seats. It was well used, as there were numerous public holidays during the Roman calendar. There are many mosaics, inscription and paintings that depict the type of things that occurred within the Amphitheatre. The many types of events included, gladiator’s vs gladiators, gladiator’s vs. wild exotic animals, animals against animals, and execution of criminals by animals. During excavation of the Amphitheatre 60 bodies where found in the barracks of the amphitheaters. Many victorious gladiators had sponsors. An inscription found near the Amphitheatre says:

However, conservation and preservation of archaeological sites can prove to be as arduous as discovering them, or may be more. As a historical site is discovered, it becomes the responsibility of the government and everybody who has to play a role, to secure that site and to not let it deteriorate. In August, Mount Vesuvius erupted again. The blast send a plume of ashes, pumice, rocks, and scorching hot volcanic gases so high into the sky that people could see it for hundreds of miles around. As it cooled, the tower of debris drifted to earth : first the fine-grained ash, then the lightweight chunks of pumice and other rocks. Furthermore, Mount Vesuvius is rich in history and detail to be and learned from the age of the volcano to the types of rocks that can be found around and inside the walls of the volcano. Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located in near one of Italy’s largest Naples overlooking the bay. It is the only active volcano in Europe at this time that has produced a series of eruptions before the infamous eruption in 79A.D. to its last eruption in 1944.

The layers of pumice and ash that fell on Pompeii formed a shell over the city, preserving it as a time capsule of Roman life. Archaeologists have unearthed dazzling treasures, like jewels, mosaic artwork, and statues. They even found a basket of petrified eggs and the remains of a bowl of chicken soup.

Amendo Maiuri grand vision was to reconstruct the entire site to its original appearance. He excavated right around the walls of Pompeii, uncovering the cemetery as well as significant buildings eg. insulaes along the via dell’ Abbondanza, the amphitheatre and the palaestra. Maiuri used mechanical equipment to clear away debris from earlier excavations and to assist in areas that previously had been considered too hard to excavate. As part of conservation, Maiuri restored the walls and ceilings and erected roofs for protection. However, he was criticized for excavations that were done too quickly with little documentation. Some excavated buildings were unprotected and wall paintings faded without ever being recorded. However, Maiuri’s great enthusiasm for the site and the important buildings he uncovered, attracted many tourists and made Pompeii well known internationally.

The events that transpired during and after these eruptions have shaped the way scientists and people view the sheer power that these volcanoes possessed. This report will take a look at Vesuvius’ most prolific eruption in 79 AD. The geologic setting of the mountain, precursor activity, and the impact the eruption had on the surrounding populations and towns will all be detailed. College sports are rapidly increasing in the United States. Crowds of up to 75,000 fans squeeze into stadiums and arenas to watch teenagers play the sport they love. Many people may even argue that college sports are over powering professional sports. Students in college are solely playing for their love of the game and not millions of dollars. These student athletes are generating millions of dollars for their colleges every season and in return they receive scholarships. Some may say that sports have no official place in college and are compromising academic standards and are not fair to students who are not athletes. Others may say that it is wrong for football coaches to earn more than university presidents. Although these ideas are true, colleges should strongly support their sport teams and help bring the school together as a whole.

During my educational career I have written essays that had purpose or value in an educational environment for grading. Whether this was my intent or not it was what was asked of me by my instructors. Throughout all of these essays I keep a moderate amount of my own honestly throughout them. This is especially so in any essay that must ask questions. Luckily you, the reader, get to witness this. This assignment has asked questions for each and every paragraph that will be included but I might throw in a little bit of my own touches here and there. Before I finish up here I have to address them. Previously the length of my writing was much greater and it almost upsets me to think of the degree I use to write at in high school compared to now. I was a confident writer that started on the first sign of an essay. Unfortunately I am not being challenged and it shows in my ability to perform. I plan on examining my college work in order to show my growing apathy toward writing. Overall, and I mean overall, my college experience (not just in writing) has felt like a joke. The punch line is the amount of my money that will be wasted and let me tell you, it’s hilarious.

Pompeii provides us with the perfect example of a typical roman city and is arguably the most famous site for archaeologists in the world after the events in 79AD. When considering how far Romanized Pompeii had become by the time of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius it is important for us to take into considerations defining factors that made up Roman cities such as the Political set up, the Governments in place, structure of the city and even the religious aspects of the city, which is all somewhat apparent from Pompeii through discoveries. Within this essay I will compare the defining features that made up a typical Roman city and compare them to what we know of how Pompeii was set up.
