Pop Culture of Double Standards As we all know, pop culture, or also known as popular culture, is the current mainstreams of a given culture in a time period in which ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images, and other phenomena affects the culture. In the 21st century, there are many pop cultures that are in the mainstream. One of the current mainstreams I chose for pop culture is double standards. I find this mainstream really interesting because even in the previous centuries (1800s and 1900s), there were many double standards. An example would be that "sexually active high school girls are more likely to say they 've been bullied than sexually active high school boys (Svokos)". From my perspective, double standards will always be an issue that even in the future generations, it will not be unavoidable and a critical problem that should be discussed.
Double standards has been an issue to men and women ever since the 17th century. This century was the start of double standards and how it continued to develop up to today 's century. For example, in Keith Thomas 's article, "The Double Standard", he states that if society is to allow men to have comparative sexual freedom and at the same time, have women be single and married women chaste, then that would formally be found as "without sacrificing the latter". In other words, Thomas is trying to explain that if men had sexual freedom, they would not be affected by
Pop culture, what does this term even mean? It seems to be a word that contains subjects of media, social structure, and society as a whole. According to the dictionary, pop culture is defined as “cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people”. In the society we live in today, we are constantly surrounded by pop culture, either that is with television, magazines, different sources of social media and/or exposure to others. Due to pop culture being such a dominant contribution into our world today, it has effected many parts of society. The domination of social media has created idealistic views that are stressed upon female adolescents in particular. Upon media’s influence, traditional tactics and work have been modified in order to keep up with our technology oriented society. This alters the schools and education systems. Through the use of television, social media and other means of pop culture, serious study is necessary due to the negative effects it has on the younger generation and the effects it has for their futures.
As one looks through society, one starts to see many cracks and loopholes where one set of standards does not apply the same way for men as it does to women, and vice versa.
Over the past couple of decades the usage of offensive stereotypes have played a big role in popular films, TV shows, music videos, and comedy routines today. In fact one can only argue that these offensive stereotypes have increased considerably and will only continue to grow. There are many reasons as to why these stereotypes have only increased and have led to the creators of these films making millions and millions of dollars. The main reason behind this is making fun of race, color, poverty, and other cultures and using straightforward offensive words to do so is humorous to a large part of the US population. Although most of us would feel insulted if these
When we think of pop culture, especially in movies we think of celebrities, fashion, and tag lines. While Do the Right Thing (DTRT) by Spike Lee has maybe one of those, but its powerful themes, characters and presentation turned it into one of the most notable films ever. It heavily employs the interactionist approach by showing different cultures interacting with one another, and making major points of their own stereotypical racial biases, bigotry and degrees of discrimination, as well as the initial signs of gentrification which culminate into series of ever intensifying events that forever change the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Sty). DTRT utilizes metaphor of heat and pop culture themes of music, fashion and racial conflict, to address real social, economic, institutional and political inequities that still plague our society today.
In what ways do the media perpetuate stereotyping and prejudice? Provide examples to support your assertion.
Sexual double standard is when there is more sexual freedom for men than women in the world. Summary of example: Legal experts, meanwhile, are beginning to speak out about a double standard regarding how courts treat male versus female statutory rapists. Men fall into the usual stereotype of somehow believing a teenage male student probably enjoyed a sexual relationship with his adult teacher. Male teachers are always labeled as predators by the public. Female teachers are often mischaracterized as immature, confused or even vulnerable- even though they are just as predatory in their selection and grooming behavior to seduce that child. When it comes down to equality between the sexes it will never be even. The example is relevant to this topic
A very prevalent and obvious double standard between genders exists when speaking of how many sexual partners one has had. For women, having multiple partners may be considered promiscuous. They may even be looked down upon by friends and strangers. However, men with multiple partners are highly accepted, and even encouraged to some degree by our society. It is more acceptable for a man to have multiple partners than a woman. Another double standard that exists between the genders is the level of aggressiveness or assertiveness one shows, specifically in the workplace. Men who are assertive are seen as powerful and successful, while women are seen as bossy, irritable, cranky, or controlling. This makes female bosses even more of a rarity than male bosses. One last double standard that exists between the sexes is how self image and self esteem affects a person. Women and girls are much more aware and conscious of their bodies and how they look than men are. They are judged way more harshly by society for how they look and how they behave. Females should always behave like "ladies"—properly dressed, never foul mouthed or cursing, always clean, and always on their best behavior with polite manners. However, the male population is hardly ever scolded for cursing, being dirty, or not showing proper manners. It is unfair that women and girls have to live up to such expectations when men and boys don't give it a second thought. Although there are many more double standards that exist between men and women, these three are some of the most
Popular culture is defined as “a composite of all the values, ideas, symbols, material goods, processes, and understandings that arise from mass media” (Atkins 131). It is well-known to the public and reinforces the way people see they world, including aspects such as race, ethnicity, and gender. According to Omi, popular culture “deals with the symbolic realm of social life, the images which it creates, represents, and disseminates contribute to the overall racial climate” (540). The individuals or groups belong to a specific race can be perceived based on their behavior portrayed by the mass media, instead of being recognized for who they truly are. Such effect created by the popular culture contributes to what is known as “racial stereotype”, which is “beliefs about differences in behavior associated with racial differences” (Jones 982).
The double standard discussed by Andersen and Witham (2011) is the sexual double standard. The sexual double standards get to be obvious when the sexual behaviors of women and men are exposed to different judgments that depend on a variety of societal desires of either gender. For instance, it is acceptable for men to have loads of sexual encounters before settling down for a long haul sexual relationship; in spite of that, the same is not considered for women. Any woman that takes part in a lot of sexual relationships is normally classified as “sluts” while men with the same behavior are thought to be
Here in the United States, progressive laws as well as equal rights movements have lead to far less extreme consequences for their actions, but that doesn’t mean that the epidemic of double standards against women doesn’t live strong in our society. As I grew up I began to realize the sacredness of a woman’s virginity in the eyes of my peers, and as I continued to grow, I watched the exact same peers frown upon the girls that had lost their virginity. Being towards the top of the social hierarchy at my school allowed me to talk to hundreds of boys and girls. I would sit and listen as boys would say “I don’t want her, she’s a (explicit)” or even go to as far as exploit the girls
While applying to universities you will notice that college is very costly if you don’t have any scholarships and have to pay for it on your own. There is financial assistance available to those qualifying applicants. Unfortunately, If you are a male ages 18 through 25 you have to register with the Selective Service (Draft Board) if you decide to utilize federal student aid. If you are a female you don’t have to do register with the Selective Services and this is a perfect example of double standards in our society. In my opinion this is very sexist and unfair to men who would like to apply for the federal grants without being obligated to register. It is in my opinion any individual male or female should be held to the same standard.
This article explores the sexual health implications the sexual double standard can have on young black women in the U.S. The HIV rate for black women is between 4-20 times as high as the rate for other ethnic groups is a result of the sexual double standard due to men having concurrent sexual relationships because they feel powered to do so. This weakens women’s health because they become infected with these diseases which can lead to so many health issues. The sexual double standard expects women to have little sexual knowledge of themselves which limits their agency. It explains the intersectionality of black women and how the sexual double standard is traced back through history to slavery and racial inequality. In this sense, white women
Men and women were put on completely different pedestals when comparing sexual freedom. Women were expected to aid their husbands in every task as well as prove their worth in order to make their husbands feel as though they made the correct decision in marrying them. Although women have come a long way in the realm of independence and freedom, the female gender is still in an on going battle with society at large. All of this said, there are still remaining double standards between the two genders today, some might say even
Double standard is when one group is highly favored than the other. It is highlighted specifically in today’s day to day activities. People are condemned when they do and don’t follow the double standard of society. In today's society, women try to live up to the standard constructed by the media, they are constantly judged regardless of what they do. It’s just like when someone tells a person to change something about themselves, when they do that , they are criticized for doing so, it is absolutely humiliating and
he United States has claimed for years to be a melting pot, where race or various preferences do not define our role in society. Most everyday people do not even realize or notice the amount of stereotyping that occurs in mass media. It is important to understand the different types of discrimination marginalized groups face. Stereotypes can affect everyone, whether it is based on their race, gender, or sexual preference. Media makers could easily find ways to not discriminate against people, but perhaps this would make that specific media outlet less popularly attended to.
