Beginning towards the end of this time period (1943), and continuing on through the next period of American theatre, is known as the golden age of theatre. Shows during this time period tended to be a bit showier than in other periods focusing more on technical and design elements, while still maintaining a story. During the golden age of theatre many of the most popular musicals were produced.
Some of the most popular shows take the form of musicals during this era.
Popular musicals include: The Wizard of Oz, Oklahoma. Although musicals may now be the most popular part of Broadway, during its initial experiments it seems that producers were skeptical about its commercial potential. Many of the musicals produced are still popular to this day,
