4-7. Which of Porter’s four competitive strategies does Apple engage in? Explain. Apple, being worth two times the amount of Google, has taken on the challenges of competitors and struggles of the past (Solomon 1). As a competitive strategy, Apple tends to focus on differentiating its products and services from those of the competition and employs the cost or differentiation strategy across the entire industry. “Industry-wide differentiation” is what has contributed to the success and failure of Apple since their first development of the home computer, Lisa, in 1983 (Computer History Museum 1). Apple has constantly been an attention seeker when it comes to unique products and ideas. When the PC era was popular, Apple was in the process of developing iPods, iPads, and iPhones in order to steer away from PC and into the mobile device industry. Also, Apple is currently developing the first watch to perform the same functions as an iPhone. All in all, Apple has always been willing to focus on product differentiation in order to succeed. 4-8. What do you think are the three most important factors in Apple’s past success? Justify your answer. Considering the long past of Apple, I feel that all the events have contributed to the past success and made them who they are today.
