Position Paper On Abortion

Abortion is never an easy decision, but women have been making the choice for thousands of years. It has become a large dilemma since 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court passed a law making the procedure legal, and an even larger controversial issue. The controversy is divided into “Pro-Choice” and Pro-Life” views. Pro-Choice supporters believe that the woman should have to choice whether to abort or not. Pro-Life supporters believe that it should be illegal to abort and preformed. However, there are many ways for this procedure to be performed. Abortion still remains today a controversial issue, by who should determine if it is the right thing to terminate a pregnancy or not and by how the procedure should be preformed.

The simple definition of the termination of pregnancy has such an up roar and a voice of opinions in society. When many hear the word abortion, they think of a woman getting rid of her baby because she was not being safe with her partner and that she is making a selfish decision. An abortion can also occur spontaneously where it is then referred to as a miscarriage. It is important to understand reasoning behind why each abortion was chosen before judging the parents of the baby or the doctor involved. Many say that abortions are unethical as they are speaking in the baby’s voice, but some voices find the side where there are circumstances that make an abortion ethical and necessary which defines pro-choice and pro-life.

The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case (1973) as pro-life advocates and pro-choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the “medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most controversial medical procedures”. To be Pro-Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one who is not in favor of the practice. Pro-life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro-choice represents those who believe the woman deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities, failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman’s life.

Abortion has been a controversial topic regarding the political, religious, spiritual, and economical views of many Americans throughout history. Understanding the difference between pursuing abortion or rejecting it at the end is an individuals option. Abortion refers to the voluntary termination of a pregnancy, resulting in the death of the fetus or embryo.(CITE) Therefore, throughout the entire life journey of Congress and legal rights, there has been a drift of thoughts towards abortion. It can be represented both parties that advocate for “pro-choice” or “pro-life” and there can be two sides presented with both arguments. After many debates and thoughts on this legal topic, one must consider if it fair and valid to legalize abortion

Many differences of opinion arise in regards to abortion, including the obvious “pro-life or pro-choice” question many people have defiant answers to. The battle for the legality of abortion is one that is highly debated and argued by pro-life and pro-choice believers. Pro-life are those who stand for the abolition of abortions; pro-choice, on the contrary, stand for its legality. Though many in both groups believe in a more blurred line of when exceptions should be made, in its entirety, they are on opposite ends of the abortion spectrum. With ever-changing moral and ethical standards, pro-choice challenges the pro-life debate with medical, sexist, and illogical arguments.

The conflict over abortion has been a widely debated topic for many years and is largely at the forefront of discussions in past and current political debates. But for the purpose of this discussion I am going to be focusing on with you the view of being on one side of the fence as opposed to being in the middle. There is a large debate within the subject of abortion over when one believes human life begins. Pro-lifers believe that life begins at contraception, whereas those who are pro-choice tend to think of it as when the actual personhood of an individual begins as to be able to justify their reasoning for supporting abortion. Pro-life and Pro-choice debates have become very controversial over the years. The Pro-Life stance fights for equal rights for the fetus, while the Pro-Choice stance fights for equal rights for the women. Currently abortions are legal in the United States up to the second trimester. The purpose of this power point will be to explore the ethical and legal viewpoints of the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice stances.

There is hypocrisy in people who identify themselves as “pro-life” and the word itself can be misleading as it does not align with the true values of protecting a life.

The pro-life movement argues that even an undeveloped human life is consecrated and that the government should be required to protect it. Individuals who are pro-choice believe that individuals have unlimited freedom to their own reproductive systems, as long as they do not involve themselves in the decisions of others.

There are about 3,700 abortions every year. The history of abortions in the United States go back to 1973. In 1973, it became legal to perform abortions, but only when necessary to save the mother's’ life. Many people oppose of abortion. The Pro-Life movement is against abortion. Many people are pro-life, along with the people who have had an abortion and now regret it. The Pro-life movement is strengthened not only by choice and religion, but also by science.

Abortion as we all know, is a controversial topic that has been known to debate on whether it should be legal or illegal. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. This particular issue goes way back and even though it is legal now in some places it is still being debated on. Those individuals who are taking sides are either on the pro-choice side or pro-life. Pro-choice being that you agree with a women’s life to have an abortion and pro-life that your against this belief. Now, this paper will briefly go over the overall definition of abortion and how it began, then explain how it was debated and legalized in some states, and finally why it is still debated and why there is no common ground. We always seem hear both sides on abortion whether it’s being against or for it both sides intentions are overlooked.

Abortions happen to be one of the most discordant social issues in the world, raising political and ethical debates for years. The two main groups involved within the abortion debate, are pro-life and pro-choice. The pro-life, meaning anti-abortion, members believe on ethical grounds that abortions are murder, while pro-choice, meaning pro-abortion, members believe that it is a woman’s right to have an abortion, and should not be governed by anyone. I believe in the latter of the two, therefore I am pro-choice. I feel that regardless of governmental convictions, religious standpoints, and health risks, it is a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body.

“One in three U.S. women will have an abortion in her lifetime. In America two percent of women between 15-44 will get an abortion each year.”(Sharples) Abortion is the act of stopping a pregnancy intentionally, so that the child is not born. Abortion is controversial due to it being a morally and ethically gray area. The most important question is whether or not abortion is morally wrong. If morality wasn’t enough, we then have to ask ethical questions. There are two main groups in this debate: pro-life and pro-choice Pro-life believes that intentional abortion is wrong, while the pro-choice side believes that intentional abortion is acceptable in some circumstances. Due to this controversy abortion has become a popular topic in the debates of the masses.

Choosing life or death, a topic that hits home for many, what if you could control someone else’s fate? Abortion is a controversial topic that makes people question what if? Pro-life is a platform that terrifies or offends those who believe that someone else’s life is their playground of decision. I crave the sound of a baby's first breath, their warm chubby cheeks, and undeniable sweet giggles. The fatal choice of leading an unborn fetus to the light repulses me. I concur with the opinion that, you should have the choice: a choice to not get pregnant in the first place, to keep your baby, or give the baby up  for adoption. I am very close with a family who is struggling with the road to parenthood. They struggle with infertility and would give anything to have a child.
