Negative Effects of Segregation in U.S. Segregation took place for almost a century and some effects still linger. Overall, segregation had a negative effect and stayed in place until laws declared segregation and separate but equal illegal. By definition, to segregate means to keep the blacks and whites separate in most areas of living, such as social mixing ,education, bathroom, drinking fountains and neighborhoods. In addition, for many decades, blacks were deprived of rights, guaranteed to whites. Segregation affected humanity in a negative way by presenting the black population as inferior to the white population and through the denying of privileges and human rights, including harassment by hate group, inequalities in important areas of life and restricting where blacks could live. Segregation made inroads in the lives of blacks which lowered their standard of living. The black population lived in fear of menacing groups like the KKK (Klu Klux Klan) who paraded through towns dressed in white sheets, white hoods with only eye holes, and carrying ropes used for lynching.
“Cloaked in robes and hoods to disguise their identities, clan members threatened, beat and killed numerous blacks and others who supported them” (Ku Klux Klan, Gale). Although the KKK was adamant in their belief that blacks were inferior, they had no actual facts or studies to confirm their beliefs.
