f. Ethical conclusion The positive consequences show that a lot of people will benefit if media will change how they perceive the standard of beauty they are showing. A lot of women will increase their self-confidence in their beauty and a lot of young kids will be save in having eating disorder and committing to unhealthy diet just to achieve the perfect body media are telling to them. However, the negative consequence shows that media industry will be the most affected to this transition. Advertisements are using thin models to sell their products in the market and a lot of companies are selling products to enhance the appearance of people. It shows that morally the net utility of positive consequence gives a greater good to a lot of people compare to negative consequences. This means that it is ethically wrong to advertise wrong body image because it set people to unrealistic idea of beauty that brings negative effect physically and mentally to people that can risk their
More people feel insecure about themselves because society expects them to look like a model. Especially teenagers are targeted in an early age that if the teens are thin and pretty then they will become successful and happy in life like the models in the magazines. If only they knew that models are not so happy as they seem. The fashion industry obsession with thinness leaves the models a high risk of developing anorexia (Hawkes).“Not everything in life is what it seems.” The media is one of the factors that affect how people see themselves (Diantgikis). One advertisement can change the whole self-esteem of one person. The promotion of the thin ideal causes people to have a bringe environment (Hawkes). Many people are dying because they want to have the “perfect” body. Small sizes are preferred better than larger ones. The size zero obsession causes women to undergo eating habits to lose weight (Hawkes). This causes an effect on the health of the person.
Providing an influence like this in to today’s society will change the morals of those who has a negative view on body image. “My life is full of drama, and I don’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like (Marlen K, 2015).” Even the interactions with siblings, relatives or even coworkers can influence the body image development. But most and foremost everyone must be able to prove this myths society has made wrong and instead challenge them to prove the thoughts/theories wrong. These are the ways I came up with to help others develop a positive body
Media holds such high standards in today 's society, and media as a whole has gotten so much power throughout the years. There are so many different forms of media in today 's world: newspapers, magazines, televisions, the hundreds of websites on the Internet, social media applications, computers, and novels. Media advertises thousands of different things, but something that has stayed consistent over the years is advertisement on body image. Media advertises a specific body type, pushes different dietary needs to achieve this body type and thus creating the standard of in order to be beautiful, this particular body type must be achieved. However, what advertisers seem to be neglecting is the effect their advertisements are having on its viewers. The constant push to achieve a certain body type has affected the health of thousands of people around the world, and directly affecting the eating disorder epidemic.
The affects from these glorified standards effect many in the form of Body Image and Eating Disorders; such as Anorexia, Bulimia, and Muscle Dysmorphia. The health concerns stemmed from these diseases are very grave, and can lead to severe problems – even resulting in death. Companies that realize the effects of the media on young adults have taken initiative and started a new trend, promoting positive self-image. In time, let’s hope this becomes a turning point, where individuals can feel comfortable in their own
Female body image and the Media's influence Media has become a main influence in Western society, as well as all over the world. Beauty has been defined by the media, and it has impacted how females are viewed by themselves and others. The ideal body has changed significantly over recent years from curvy to thin. Women all over the world thrive to be like the models and celebrities in the media and ads who are much thinner than the average woman.
This is topic that really hits home for myself, since I am sixteen years into my recovery from anorexia nervosa (AN) . As a future counselor, eating disorder treatment is also the field I would like to specialize in, given my experience with anorexic, binge eating, and purging behaviors. Diagnosed in my early twenties with AN, I experienced hospitalizations due to low weight, amenorrhea, laxative abuse, as well as binging and purging. Although my relationship with food continues to be a struggle to this day, I have maintained a healthy weight for many years and understand that I will always need to monitor my behaviors in order to remain healthy. Much like an alcoholic takes things day by day, so does the individual recovering from an

Every time we turn on our television sets, view an ad on the web or on your social media page, we’re blasted with images and unrealistic expectations of the “perfect body.” The motto seems to always be “Thinner is better.” Over 80% of Americans watch television daily, on average these people watch approximately three hours per day. Human beings, at every age group are bombarded with an influx of information, that shapes the mindset of what is considered beautiful and attractive. What is portrayed on all forms of media, has an effect on society in its entirety. The negative effects of what is fed to society via social and mass media affects us all, either directly, within our own self-perception and image, or indirectly, someone we may know.
Having this unnecessary amount of pressure to have perfect bodies can affect people negatively in a health-related way. One example that supports this is that girls can gain eating disorders. In an attempt to not gain any weight, young women can develop eating disorders called anorexia nervosa (restricting their food intake and becoming afraid of food in fear of gaining weight). Anorexia nervosa affects nearly 75% of females. Bulimia Nervosa, more commonly known as “binge and purge” is also seen in females (Moreau). This is important because the pressure at home and from society can cause girls to feel as though they need to change when in actuality they are perfect. Every women wants to have a perfect body as like as a model’s body because they believe that model do have a perfect and beautiful body as compared to their body. If women are not slim, then they think themselves that they were not much beautiful as they have to be, so they worship the body image and struggle a lot to become a slim. In the article “The Beauty Myth,” Naomi Wolf writes that “During the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing medical specialty” (Wolf 119). This sentence of Wolf elaborate that problem of physical disorders like eating disorders
Eating disorders develop psychologically rather than socially. The brain does not work correctly, including effects like hallucinations and irregular bodily functions, which in turn cause issues. People might say that eating disorders are controversial because of how they form and in what ways they evolve. This is all due to the psychological problems in the brain that are created or activated once a certain thought or feeling enters the mind. There is a little circuit in the brain that is already there, ready to be touched or activated. Once initiated, the thought or feeling grows until it becomes a disease. When the eating disorder fully develops, it causes more damage to the brain, creating a bigger problem which affects the interior and
