Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a debilitating disorder that impacts the lives of military personnel everywhere. Veterans of the Vietnam War were among the first individuals where Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was really seen. The disorder took a long time to even have a name but due to the efforts of those suffering from it, it was finally recognized. In 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, finally included Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a mental health disorder. The DSM is the manual that sets the standard for all mental health treatment. The DSM defined Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as having intrusive recollections, numbness to what is going on around the person, detachment, and sleep disturbances.
